Part of the strand that emerged in the 70s with that folky 60s, popish, countryish, acoustic guitarish, sound that was so sweet and syrupy. And who doesn't love a little afternoon delight?

Most people usually want to know how this song got played on the radio in the seventies with lyrics about daytime boot knocking.

I remember when it came out and it was discussed that it was okay since the singers were two married couples.

It was a one-hit wonder but man, it was on the radio all the time, and at first I didn't really like it because I was more into Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin and so forth, but it was in the summer when I had my first girlfriend and she loved it, therefore I learned quite quickly that I loved it as well, lol. But that is one thing I really love about a lot of 70s music, especially pop but even holds true in a lot of the rock music of the time, but it's just those lush harmonies, and the presence of the voices and everything. It just gives me a warm feeling. Another one like that was extremely popular and it was always a guilty pleasure for me, it's just so fun, and I can't remember where in Europe they are from, but I want to say Scotland, but the song is called Magic, by the band Pilot. I especially love the bridge of it: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmfSZGuDg52sp6c&pp=ygULcGlsb3QgbWFnaWM%3D

A very delightful reaction 😃! Bill Danoff was the first singer. Afternoon Delight was released as the lead single from the Starland Vocal Band's 1976 album: Starland Vocal Band. It was written by Bill Danoff. It was produced by Milt Okun. Dave Matthews arranged the strings. The song reached #1 on the Hot 100, #5 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #94 on the Country chart. No info on the music video is available. The song's title came from the happy hour menu at Clyde's restaurant in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., where Bill Danoff was eating with fellow bandmember Margot Chapman, while his then-wife Taffy Danoff was undergoing surgery for cervical cancer. Bill Danoff downplayed the lyrics: "I didn't want to write an all-out sex song ... I just wanted to write something that was fun and hinted at sex". The Starland Vocal Band delivered four-part harmonies with the married couple Bill Danoff and Taffy Danoff (Taffy Nivert after they split up), and another future married couple (1978): Margot Chapman and Jon Carroll - the baby of the bunch, he was just 19 when the song was released. Taffy Danoff spiced up the stage banter when they performed this song, explaining that the title came from the menu, but adding some version of "...then Bill came home and we had our own Afternoon Delight. We wrote the song instead of having a cigarette". Bill Danoff says the songwriting was far from sexy. He wrote it over the course of six months, often on Sundays when he was watching Washington Redskins football games on the television. "All that energy coming out of the tube gets my creative juices flowing", he told People magazine. A key element in this song is the pedal steel guitar lick that comes after the line: "skyrockets in flight". The band knew they needed something there to simulate the fireworks, and considered using a sound effect. Danny Pendleton, who was playing pedal steel at the session, came up with the solution by turning on every pedal and letting it rip. Once the band heard it, they knew it was right for the song. Jon Carroll has come to appreciate this song and is quite proud of it, but he wasn't happy about it when it was first released. "'Afternoon Delight' is not the kind of record for someone who wants to be perceived as a bad-ass Rock and Roller", he said in a Songfacts interview. "It's not cool to like that record, right? I was 18 when we recorded it, and it came out and I couldn't believe that they chose it as a single. Of course, I'm an idiot, because I was 18". He added: "It's always contextualized in some ridiculous way, which always pisses me off a little bit, but it also makes me aware that there's something endearing about it. Of all the usages of it, my favorite was Malcolm In The Middle when they're finally getting out of the house and the boys are finally sorted out and Mom and Dad are going out on their own. She's got her leg up on the dashboard of the Dodge Caravan, and she's shaving it.. She's all lathered up and the radio is on playing 'Afternoon Delight'". In 1976, Country singer Johnny Carver's cover version went to #9 on the Country chart. Other artists to cover the song include 📻: Claude François, Ace Cannon, Van Atta High, Graham Blvd, Unobo, Nils-Börge Gårdh and more. The song has been featured in some films including 📽: Starsky & Hutch (2004), Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy (2004), The Rules Of Attraction (2002), Boogie Nights (1997), Good Will Hunting (1997), PCU (1994), Car 54 Where Are You? (1994), The Spirit Of '76 (1990) and more. The song has been featured in some TV shows including 📺: Mindhunter ("Episode #1.4" - 2017), Glee ("Sexy" - 2011), Emily's Reasons Why Not ("Why Not To Hire A Cute Male Assistant" - 2008), My Name Is Earl ("Our 'Cops' Is On!" - 2007), Family Guy ("Stewie Kills Lois" - 2007), 30 Rock ("Fireworks" - 2007), South Park ("Miss Teacher Bangs A Boy" - 2006), Arrested Development ("Afternoon Delight" - 2004), The Simpsons ("The Fat And The Furriest" - 2003), ER ("Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic" - 2001), Malcolm In The Middle ("Home Alone 4" - 2000), Sports Night ("The Apology" - 1998), Murphy Brown ("The Big Thaw" -1997), Get A Life ("Chris Wins A Celebrity" -1991) and more. Legacy 🛡: At the 19th Grammy Awards ceremony in 1977 the song: "Afternoon Delight", received three nominations for recordings from 1976. It won the Grammy Award for "Best Arrangement for Voices" and was also nominated for "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals" and "Song of the Year". The also won the Grammy Award for "Best New Artist". In 2010, Billboard named "Afternoon Delight" the 20th sexiest song of all time. Lyrics 🗒🗒: Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight Gonna grab some afternoon delight My motto's always been 'when it's right, it's right' Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night? When everything's a little clearer in the light of day And we know the night is always gonna be there any way Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite Looking forward to a little afternoon delight Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting Sky rockets in flight Afternoon delight Afternoon delight Afternoon delight Started out this morning feeling so polite I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite But you've got some bait a waitin' and I think I might try nibbling A little afternoon delight Sky rockets in flight Afternoon delight Afternoon delight Afternoon delight Please be waiting for me, baby, when I come around We could make a lot of lovin' 'for the sun goes down Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite Looking forward to a little afternoon delight Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite And the thought of lovin' you is getting so exciting Sky rockets in flight Afternoon delight Afternoon delight Afternoon delight Afternoon delight! Starland Vocal Band Info 📰: The Starland Vocal Band began as the group: Fat City, a husband and wife duo consisting of Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert. Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert co-wrote the song: "I Guess He'd Rather Be In Colorado" and then, with John Denver, "Take Me Home, Country Roads", which became a hit single in 1971 and became an official song of West Virginia in 2014. The duo recorded two albums as Fat City: Reincarnation (1969) and Welcome To Fat City (1971). As well as, two more albums as Bill & Taffy: Pass It On (1973) and Aces (1974). In the mid-1970s, the Starland Vocal Band was formed and subsequently signed to John Denver's record label: Windsong Records. Starland Vocal Band also included Jon Carroll (keyboards, guitar, vocals) and Margot Chapman (vocals). John Carroll and Margaret Chapman also became a couple, marrying in 1978. The group's debut album was the self-titled: Starland Vocal Band, and included the #1 Pop single: "Afternoon Delight". The song also peaked at #18 on the UK Singles chart. The album also charted on the Billboard Album chart at #20. The group were nominated for four Grammy Awards in 1977 and won two: Best Arrangement for Voices and Best New Artist, the latter award over the Rock group Boston. The group's follow-up album: Rear View Mirror (1977), did not fare as well, as none of the released singles: "Liberated Woman", "The Light Of My Life" and "Mr Wrong", charted. The album spent 13 weeks on the Billboard Album chart peaking at #104. The band hosted a variety show called: The Starland Vocal Band Show, that ran on CBS for six weeks in the summer of 1977. David Letterman was a writer and regular on the show, which also featured the show writers Mark Russell, Jeff Altman, Philip Proctor, Peter Bergman and April Kelly. The group would released three more albums: Late Nite Radio (1978), 4 X 4 (1980) and Christmas At Home (1980), but unable to match their previous success, the band broke up in 1981. John Carroll and Margaret Chapman divorced in 1981, followed by Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert in 1982. All four members went on to pursue solo music careers as well as, providing backing vocals, writing and producing behinds the scenes for various artists. All four band members have remained on friendly terms, and in 1998 the group reunited for a few concerts, often featuring the children of the four original members as additional vocalists. In 2007, they appeared on a 1970s special on the New Jersey Network (NJN), singing the song: "Afternoon Delight". Bill Danoff taught a songwriters course in 2007 and a music industry seminar (with Walter Egan) in 2008 at his alma mater Georgetown University. Until 2011, Taffy Nivert lived in the Washington, DC area, where she occasionally performed with Bill Danoff and the rest of the Starland Vocal Band. The group has no performances scheduled for 2024.
