OMG.... I went to Illinois Valley school in my Jr year. My folks moved to Selma (this was before I lived in Oregon on my own) after my Jr year had already started in Sacramento California. I had crapy classes because nothing was open by the time I got there...we moved back to So. Cali before the year was even over as things didn't go well.. I loved lunch tho, killer salad bar and there was a band that played there in the lunch quad...I think they were a Christian rock band from Selma. I would have been class of 80 as well but that's another story...lol Small World!!

I saw this man live at every opportunity. The live show is so completely awesome you just have to keep coming back for more. The live version of "Swingtown" is worth the price of admission alone. The voices are so mesmerizing. Steve Miller also plays an instrument called a sitar which played a big role in 1960's psychedelic music, and I think the only time you get to hear him play it is live. Maybe "Wild Mountain Honey" has some sitar in it. Regardless, he is just a master of that instrument as well. Gawd his live show is awesome!!

I was introduced to this song at my very first job. I worked at an amusement park in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1992. I worked concessions but they had a ride called the Himalaya that was one of those rides where they spin you in one direction then stop and go the other way. The owner only allowed music like this to be played. I learned about some of the greatest music to EVER be released. Steve Miller Band has a very deep catalog.

Steve Miller Band "Jet Airliner" is a good song. Written by Pena Paul, a blind R & B musician who never had any commercial success, and his only income until he died were the royalties for his song from Steve Miller, who made the song a hit.

Back in the 70s, it seemed like everyone had the "Steve Miller's Greatest Hits" album (including me) and this was one of the tracks. In an episode of "That 70s Show", Eric (I think it was) says, "some people call me the space cowboy" and Hyde (I think) replies, "nobody calls you the space cowboy". It was pretty funny. 😄

A Steve Miller concert is a great time for all involved. He is a vastly underrated singer, guitar player, including the slide guitar on this song and others, and songwriter. He's been active since the 1960's and as far as I know, he is still doing his thing out there. If you have a chance to see him, do it. Livin' In The USA is an early rarity that you might enjoy.

Sweet! Miller drops the names of a few of his earlier songs in the first verse -- "Space Cowboy", "Gangster of Love", and "Enter Maurice" -- as introductions after he retooled his sound for the seventies. "The Joker" became an FM rock radio staple and remains so to this day. Steve Miller Band dropped a trio of monster hits in 1976 -- "Fly Like an Eagle", "Take the Money and Run", "Rock'n Me" -- that more or less ruled FM rock radio for the rest of the seventies.

Hey BJ, yeah, it was some slide with the high end rolled way off, along with a wah wah pedal (they make sort of a quacky, wah wah sort of sound - think 70s car chases...lol). Good ear. Steve Miller Band had a LOT of good tunes - many people wore out the "Greatest Hits" album back in the 70s/80s.

Slide Guitar is a pill bottle that is used to slide up and down the strings of the guitar. Steve Miller was playing the guitar this way in this song. Duane Allman was known for playing the guitar like this. Especially on an album that Eric Clapton's group Derek and the Dominos specifically the song "Layla".

The word is probably a corruption of - or imagined variation on - the word "puppetutes", which was itself a coinage, originated by Vernon Green at the age of 14. Green included the word "puppetutes" in the lyrics of doo-wop song "The Letter" (1954), as performed by him and The Medallions. "The Letter" also included another original coinage, "pismotality". Presumably in homage to the Medallions' song, Steve Miller used the nonce words "epismetology" and "pompatus" in the lyrics of two of his other songs, "Enter Maurice" and "The Conversation", one of which is, like "The Letter", in spoken-word style. The appealing oddness of the phrase "the pompatus of love" garnered a lot of attention, and inspired its use by others. For example, as the title of a 1996 film starring Jon Cryer.

I'm not sure what type of guitar he was playing but you could almost certainly count on the electronic effects being something that Les Paul created. Les Paul ( yes the very same that the guitars named after) was a inventor of many unique guitar special effects and he was Steve Miller's Godfather. So Steve Miller did have access to many technical toys whenever he wanted them.

Now Fly Like an Eagle is his next song. It’s his most famous song and was always on the radio back then. I know you guys probably don’t get stoned, but some of these old songs are made for that. The artists all got high and made some music just for that. This is one of those songs. Fly Like an Eagle, get it? Plus in this song, the Joker, Steve Miller makes a direct reference to getting high. I’m a joker, I’m a smoker, I’m a midnight TOKER! They used to call smoking toking sometimes back then. Now: hit that joint. Then: take a toke off that joint.
