My husband is the chief engineer for more than 20 radio stations here in the Shreveport area. One of his stations hosted Steve Miller in concert a few years ago. It was in the summer and an outside event. Steve was a total blast. He played non-stop for almost 4 hours. He was still smooth. It was a really fun concert!

As a young woman of that era, a "joker", was a good hearted player. You did not put your heart on the line with these boys, because they were all the original free spirit. But they weren't users. They truly loved the women they were with, while they were with them. They really didn't want to hurt no one. You couldn't help but love them. And they were normally too cute for their own good.

Well said lady. I appreciate your point of view. I was a free spirit that never had an evil intent in my soul. I guess that was attractive to the ladies that I had an opportunity to know. I never hurt a soul or caused a long- lasting sorrow that I know of. (more the opposite heh).

Its 1973 I jump the fence of my backyard and I land on my elementary school. I notice a ring of teenagers sitting and smoking on the baseball field and I hear "The Joker" for the first time in my life. The kids are all smoking and having a good time listening to music, specifically this song. Little did I know how much I would end up loving "Steve Miller's music and especially this song. My mind immediately goes back to that time every time I hear this song. Truly a classic song of that era and any era.

The word "pompitous" or "pompatus" stems from Steve Millers mishearing of the phrase "puppetutes of love" in the 1954, Vernon Green song "The Letter" in which he used the words "puppetutes of love"... his combination of "puppets" and "prostitutes". A puppetute being a woman of your fantasies who would do.
@russallert2 ай бұрын
Wolfman Jack used the phrase in his guest appearance with The Guess Who on Clap For The Wolfman, which I believe is from the same year (1974) as The Joker, or pretty close.
