Styx keyboard player Dennis DeYoung wrote this song about his wife Suzanne, who was his high school sweetheart and a true "lady" who carried herself with class. Other songs he wrote about her include "Babe" and "The Best Of Times." DeYoung's marriage endured, even through a late '90s health scare that ended his time with the band. He has often exclaimed how much he loves her and what an important part of his life she is. Dennis DeYoung wrote this song in 1972, but Styx' record company rejected it for their first album, which was released that year. It was included on their second album, Styx II, in 1973 and released as a single, but it went nowhere. According to DeYoung, radio stations didn't know how to classify it, since it started slow and then picked up. It was only through the efforts of a very persistent DJ on WLS in Chicago (the band's hometown) that the song got its due. Determined to make it a hit, he played the song every night at 8 p.m., until it caught on. It did, and other stations added it to their playlists (when DeYoung first heard it on the radio, he choked on his dinner he was so excited). It wasn't until March 1975 that the song reached its chart peak of #6, giving them their breakout hit.

All the internal drama with the band aside, Dennis De Young has one of the greatest voices in rock. They actually shared lead vocals between Dennis, James Young and Tommy Shaw. They all have very different vocal styles. Compare this with Boat on the River and then Miss America.

When I was growing up about 2 hours outside of Chicago, the big station we all listened to was WLS-FM, an huge AM station that we could pick up 2 hours away. In the early 70's, they started playing, "LADY" in constant rotation. Well at the time , no one knew who STYX was at the time. They were on a tiny label called WOODEN NICKEL records and were total nobodies, but this song launched them. My favorite album is still "EQUINOX"

Styx was a "garage band" in the Chicago south suburbs who would play anywhere and everywhere, trying to make it big. As an example, they played at my Catholic grade school for about a $1 in 1973. People started calling into WLS and WCFL in Chicago, requesting the song. It took 2 more years, but they made it big and never looked back.

@@alkronlage5236 - I have been a fan of Styx since 1975. You don't know what you are talking about. JY didn't sing any of their top 40 hits. The only ones of his that charted were on the rock charts not the Billboard Hot 100. Name one song he sang other than Miss America and Snowblind (the only one released on the Rock charts that reach 22 and he shared vocals with Tommy because Dennis, who cowrote the song, thought Tommy should take lead.) Dennis DeYoung's vocals and songwriting are the only reason you know of Styx. Tommy Shaw wasn't even on the first five albums or two of their top ten hits. Anyone who disrespects Dennis DeYoung is not a fan of Styx, he is the reason Styx exists.

The original version of this was released in 1972 and was a b-side to a 45. Asia, lead singer on this song is Dennis DeYoung who wrote this song for his wife Suzanne (also the 1979 hit "Babe" was written for her). Theirs is one of rock and roll's great love stories. They were high school sweethearts and married in 1970 and are still married today. This is one of Styx earliest hits and still one of my favorite songs of theirs. They bring out all those vibes that you get when you're in love with someone from the beginning.. the butterflies in the stomach kind of thing. We don't hear that today in the music maybe that's why rock and roll will always be here.. I saw Styx live 4 times in the late 70's early 80's. One of my favorites. That's Dennis DeYoung singing. Tommy Shaw sang lead for a lot of their songs as well. You should check out "Suite Madam Blue" & "Crystal Ball" next. I saw you already reacted to "Renegade", which is also one of my favorites. Keep the Styx coming!

2nd group I fell in love with when I started listening to music (1st was Supertramp). But if you want another amazing love ballad try "I Love You" by Climax Blues Band.
