"Lady" by Styx is considered to be the first "power ballad". Styx should have been in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame long ago just from creating this genre alone. Very influential and a truly great band.

Dennis DeYoung wrote this song for his wife Suzanne. The record company rejected it in 1972 but it made it to Styx ll, in 1973. It was sleeper that didn't progress on the charts till a DJ at Chicago's WLS starting playing it every night at 8:00 to promote the hometown band. It worked. It was Number 6 in the US and made it up to Number 1 in other countries. This is a beautiful song powered with Dennis's emotional and recognizable vocals. The piano, drums and the bass line make for perfection. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Imadrummin. 👏 👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

The song that made their careers. They'd done four albums for Wooden Nickel Records, a tiny Chicago-based label that wasn't worth a wooden nickel. Barely noticed. (The third album reached the bottom of the hot 100, but nobody big was biting.) Then, one evening, Jim Smith, a disc jockey at WLS, a major station in Chicago, heard this one on the jukebox at a local pizza parlor. He played it on the air, and since WLS's transmitter was powerful enough to reach most of the USA (Chicago being centrally located), it became a hit. #6 on the charts and Styx got a real record contract (with A&M Records) and were on their way. (Not that there still weren't challenges ahead, but that's for other songs.) Written and sung by Dennis DeYoung (keyboards) for his wife, Suzanne. Not all rock marriages fail; Dennis and Suzanne celebrated their 53rd Anniversary in January. (Who gets married in January? In CHICAGO??? It must have been love.) :Let me throw out a few completely off-the-wall Styx requests from this early period, which as I said is rather little-known. One from each album, I suppose: "Quick is the Beat of My Heart" (album: Styx) "A Day" (album: Styx II) "The Grove of Eglantine" (album: The Serpent is Rising) "Golden Lark" (album: Man of Miracles) Enjoy!

Styx was a bunch of local guys from south suburban Chicago-a garage band who made it big, but only after paying their dues playing wherever they could. For example, they played at my Catholic grade school back in '73. People would call in all the time to WLS and WCFL to request "Lady", which became one of their most requested songs. It took 2 years, but "Lady" finally broke nationally for Styx.

I was finishing my degree in broad cast production at WSU. Working at KUGR. The 😅 I ate at was plugged into an FM station. They went automated, and this song played every day at 12:10 PM. The announcers pre-recorded voice would say: "LADY, Styx". Ugh, tortured with a really good song. Very Diabolical. Listening to the automated music made me feel like I had just studied for years to become a Pony Express rider and then seeing a train pass by. Kind of like I just wasted my time.
