Taylor once told a story about We Are Never Getting Back Together". Apparently, the person it is about once said that he "didn't like pop music", which is totally fine, but he said it in a condescending, pretentious way. After they broke up Taylor ran into one of his friends while she was working in the studio and he said "I heard you and [insert name] are getting back together" (which wasn't the case, but keep dreaming dude). After the friend left, Taylor turned to her producer (THE Max Martin) and said "Just so you know, that wasn't true. We are never EVER getting back together!!!" and went on a rant. She then wrote the song to be very pop and to be exactly the kind of song that would annoy him, hoping it would be a radio hit and would haunt him until the end of time. And it did😂

Actually, Taylor's parents put their feet down and flat out refused to let her date someone when she was 17; she threw a hissy fit, stormed out of the room, went to her bedroom, sat on the floor with the guitar and wrote Love Story in 20 minutes or so. I don't know about whom (or care). Problem for Taylor was, _everyone_ around her was older; her band; roadies, other bands; management, label, everybody. Notice that after she was 18, her parents didn't veto the boys anymore. So, she ended up with Mayer (12 years older) when she was 19; and then Gyllenhaal, 9 years older when she was 20.

So fun fact, the castle in Love Story is Castle Gwynn in Arrington, TN just south of Nashville. The architect Mike Freeman decided he wanted to live in a castle when he was in high school in the 70s so he built one on a hill on a huge piece of land. He hosts the TN Renaissance Festival every weekend in May every year on his property and it is such an amazing experience. You can even tour the first floor of the castle. It used to be the highlight of my 45 minute commute to see the castle rising atop the hill rounding a bend on 840 on my way home.

People in costume are her band. While the fellow on the right (Grant Mickelson) isn't with her anymore, Paul Sidoti (guitarist) and Adam Heller (bass) still are there every night. They didn't have any real reason for the costumes- -- just a joke. But she would nearly always drop her albums in the late fall, and this song is about Gyllenhaal, whom she started with just before Halloween in 2010. Whether they are just calling him out as a clown, or just pinning the time frame down, either way works for me. Basically, he started dating her about the time her Speak Now album dropped (it sold over 1.2 million the first week, country album of the year, etc. Notice, he didn't listen to country music ----- it's why I Bet You Think About Me is sort of extra country sounding).

The video for WANEGBT was shot in one continuous shot with no editing, and features five sets and Taylor changes costume for each one. It was also apparently the first video to be shot in 4K (Thank you Wikipedia). Her bandmates at the time ("The Agency") were all decked out in animal costumes. As far as Love Story is concerned, Fearless (the album it came from) was very much in her country era, and the accompanying instruments did indeed include bango, fiddle and mandolin, as well as regular instruments.

Speak Now was the first full album where she not only wrote every song by herself, but it was the first album where she experimented with different sounds.
