The Band is one of the most influential rock groups ever. A very deep rabbit hole. If you miss them, there will be a very large gap in your understanding of the history of American popular music. Their work with Dylan is historical. All members of the band take lead vocals except Robbie Robertson, the guitarist, who wrote most of their songs.

The Band is THE BEST BAND EVER! And Danko's voice is awesome in this song. Levon Helm's drumming is great as well as his led vocals in The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Don't Do It and the song The Weight that they do with The Staples is heaven on earth. It will forever change you! For the better!

Ah, The Band!!! Their first album, Music From Big Pink, came out when Hendrix and Zeppelin were exploding and their music was very different. Eric Clapton wanted to join the band. The Last Waltz was a documentary of their last performance before the band split up. They invited a lot of their friends to join them: Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Clapton, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, etc. Clips from the movie are available on youtube, but album cuts are amazing as well: King Harvest (Has Surely Come), Up on Cripple Creek, Chest Fever, The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down, The Weight, Life is a Carnival, The Shape I'm In... I can go on and on. Very influential and incredible band.

Great song from an awesome concert, memorialized in the Last Waltz. The epic star-studded event included appearances by Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr, Van Morrison and many other guest performers. It was the end of an era for me as it was the last concert that I attended before moving away from the Bay Area. For the ten years that I was lucky enough to live there, during the Bill Graham era, San Francisco was a rock and roll mecca.

Oh boy, you are in for a treat! The Band is awesome! Anything from The Last Waltz is killer! Back in the day our local theater had Friday midnight showings of rock movies. We went every Fri. and saw this countless times. After that we had it on VHS and now we have KZbin. It never gets old! Sadly, the guy on Sax (Garth Hudson) is the last surviving member of The Band. The guy singing (Rick Danko) is my fave member. There is a fragility to his voice and I love the way that it breaks with emotion.

You're absolutely correct, Salvo; "authentic" is a great word to describe both Rick Danko's vocals, as well as the Band's music, in general. Danko didn't have a traditionally polished voice, but he could convey longing and vulnerability in a heartbreakingly beautiful way. Plus, the Band has two OTHER great lead singers that you haven't heard yet. They were the back-up band, (before they became famous on their own), that Bob Dylan chose to accompany him on tour when he made his controversial/legendary leap from acoustic music to electric, and it was a match made in heaven. Another commentor has explained about the Scorsese documentary movie, and listed the amazing acts that played, but I'd like to add a couple of other things of note. The almost 5-hour long Last Waltz concert was preceded by a Thanksgiving meal (!) at the auditorium, and 42 songs were performed. The Band was on stage the entire time, either performing their own tunes or playing back-up for each of the many guest artists. A ticket for the meal and concert was $25.00. It's arguably the greatest concert ever. (I don't know about the meal, lol. 😉) Having gotten to know your musical tastes over time, Salvo, I think you would really enjoy listening to more of the Band's song suggestions that other commentors have left.

Every performance of that concert is worth every second of listening to it. Rick Danko's tortured soul comes through in this song particularly but his funky cadence often elevates the song he sings. They were with Ronnie Hawkins as the Hawks years before this. They were a hard driving rock and roll, rhythm and blues groups. The best live band I have ever heard. I am a musician and have heard many bands. They were the best band I have ever heard, as the Hawks. Bob Dylan picked them up and they electrified his music. This was the birth of folk/rock. A major shift in music that changed everything. Listen to them with Ronnie Hawkins on Roulette records doing Who Do You Love. This us a short glimpse if what they were doing, pre Dylan. The power of the music and Robbie's guitar work on this recording is very revolutionary for this early 60s recording. You had to be there.

Still one of my all-time favorite bands. Clapton said he quit Cream after The Band released their first album The Big Pink - because he figured Cream was headed in the wrong direction. It's hard to see now how radically different their sound was. Scorsese got involved when they did the good bye concert, The Last Waltz. Robbie and he became good friends, and Robertson wrote the music for many of Scorsese's films. Robbie went on to write and perform 5-6 of his own albums, all of which are amazing, story-telling kind of songs. Check out Robbie's Somewhere Down that Crazy River if you can - it's stunning. Scorsese did the video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/anyzaoOEiLqAe5Y
