So happy you got to this amazing performance Stan! I've seen The Band live 3 times in '69 & '70......brilliant concerts. This is probably my favourite performance of "The Weight". Mavis Staples is the icing on the cake!

"The Band" was a Canadian-American rock band formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 1967. They started out as the "Hawks", the backing group for singer Ronnie Hawkins in 57-64. And in 65-67 they were the back up band for Bob Dylan. The Band's first solo album included three songs written or co-written by Dylan ("This Wheel's On Fire", "Tears Of Rage" & "I Shall Be Released"). Their most popular songs included "The Weight" & "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". But they had a lot of other great songs such as "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)", "The Shape I'm In", "Ophelia", "Up On Cripple Creek", "It Makes No Difference" etc.

I love your record player story. What a happy memory. I saw Mavis in concert a few years back and she unexpectedly brought me to tears with her song “Dedicated” from one of her recent albums. Her voice was so emotional I couldn’t stop crying and I don’t really cry at songs!

The Staples are iconic. The Band is iconic. Martin Scorsese is iconic. And somehow they make you feel you're at a gospel singing. 😎

This was the last performance of The Band. It was on Thanksgiving '76 in San Francisco. Lots of great performances with them. It's one of the greatest performances ever. The movie is definitely worth a watch.

Actually the Band toured and played together for a long time after the Last Waltz, it was just missing Robbie Robertson. The Last Waltz was the last performance by The Band with Robbie on guitar. I admit Robbie is a huge part of The Band, but Pink Floyd remained Pink Floyd after Roger Waters their main songwriter and important vocalist left the band. I agree with you the last Waltz is a great movie, best concert movie of all time IMO

Shortly after The Band released their debut album Music From Big Pink featuring this song, the Staples co-vered it on their album Soul Folk In Action. So it was a natural choice for the Band to invite them to perform together. I love the Staples early stuff - Uncloudy Day, Will The Circle Be Unbroken, etc...

Actually this version is a studio version not live. It was recorded during the production of the Album The Last Waltz from the movie of the same name. Some of the members of The Band were pissed off at Robbie for including some acts (Like Niel Diamond which Robbie just happend to be producing an album for at the time) and leaving out others that really had an influence on them like the Staples Singers. They produced a studio version with The Staples Singers that looked like a live performance so it would fit in with the live theam of the Album/Concert. This information was from Levon Helms book, This Wheels On Fire.

This is an awesome song I am a huge fan of Levon Helm there is a channel called Playing for Change and it has this song on there and people from all around the planet are all playing different instrument from their home and it makes this song A Thousand Times better they even have Ringo Starr on drums but I would love for you to check that out same song Awesome version still has the lead guitarist Robbie Robertson so either on-screen or by yourself please check that version out
