A feast for the ears. So much going on in the composition. The studio musicians were amazed at an early 20s Brian Wilson having full command of understanding where he wanted the performance to go…taking inputs from the musicians as they felt it coming together

They had tons of hits such as "Surfin' U.S.A.", "Surfin' Safari", "I Get Around", "California Girls", "Help Me, Rhonda", "Barbara Ann", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Sloop John B.", "Fun Fun Fun", "Little Deuce Coupe", "God Only Knows", "In My Room" etc.

The Beach Boys are one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful bands of all time, selling over 100 million records worldwide. They helped legitimize popular music as a recognized art form and influenced the development of music genres and movements such as psychedelia, power pop, progressive rock, punk, and alternative. Between the 1960s and 2020s, the group had 37 songs reach the US Top 40 (the most by an American band), with four topping the Billboard Hot 100. In 2004, they were ranked number 12 on Rolling Stone's list of the greatest artists of all time. My favorite of their songs is God Only Knows - such an absolutely beautiful love song!!! The funny thing about the Beach Boys is that with the exception of the drummer (who had some odd experiences, like hanging around with Charles Manson) they were not surfers. Brian Wilson was the songwriter and he was convinced that surf music would sell. But he kind of evolved from writing about surfing, to writing about cars, to writing about girls. But he finally got tired of aiming his music at teenagers, and sent the rest of the band to tour Japan without him, and while they were gone he laid down the music for Pet Sounds, a much more adult album (and the album that Paul McCartney credited with inspiriing Sergeant Pepper). The band returned and laid down the vocal tracks, but was not happy about the change in direction (or the decreased sales that went with it). Wilson then created Good Vibrations, using multitracking to a degree that had not been done before, as part of what was supposed to be his masterpiece, Smile. Unfortunately, he had some serious mental health issues, and Smile wasn't finished during the sixties, and their greatest hits kind of ended there (with the exception of Kokomo, which I don't think Wilson had much to do with). Close to 40 years later Wilson would put out Smile as a solo project.

Good Vibrations is their most critically acclaimed song for sure. They have about 50 major hits. My favorite is God Only Knows. Their Pet Sounds album is rated #1 by many publications. Rolling Stone has it at #2 behind Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin On.' This is genius level stuff. About 50 years ahead of its time. Brian Wilson wrote, produced, and taught all of the music. Cousin Mike Love helped with the early song lyrics. Their song library is worth over 100 million dollars. The Beatles tried to copy Pet Sounds and were heavily influenced. The Beatles had George Martin to produce and create all of the creative (strange) stuff. Lennon, McCartney, and Harrison shared writing duties. Brian did it all. Listen to Pet Sounds. It's Brian's masterpiece. McCartney calls God Only Knows the greatest song ever written. I agree. Surfin USA is a cool song... but not close to their best. Another must listen is Surf's Up. Really... no one has caught up to Brian Wilson. Wouldn't It Be Nice... Sloop John B... Good Timin'... Darlin'... In My Room... Surfer Girl... I Get Around... Fun, Fun, Fun... Do It Again... the list is endless. If they were all still alive... they could play 3 concerts in one night... all recognizable hits... all entertaining... without repeating a song. That's how massive the library is. A very unknown album favorite is called Friends. The song Friends is very unique. There's one false rumor that floats around about Phil Spector producing the Beach Boys. That is absolutely false. It was all Brian Wilson. I enjoyed your review of Good Vibrations. Radio stations didn't know what to do with it.

Legend has it that Brian Wilson was so mesmerized by The Beatles revolver album that he changed the direction of of how the Beach Boys produce their music and produced the album Pet Sounds. Because unlike Phil’s production that was this “wall of sound” and one continuous take, Brian’s “Good Vibrations” was an “edit song”. Pieces edited together. I realize you guys know the latter but if you look at the musical change there “Good Vibrations” was one of the songs that was the start of studio trickery, in that more and more editing became the norm. Songs became pieced together as years went by. The edits are actually fairly abrupt in “Good Vibrations” which though rather archaic have this charm about them. Just speaking strictly in a technical sense. Musically it is genius of course. Now look where we are with Pro Tools and being able to edit quickly in a piece of music from our home computers. Pretty amazing the progress. Of course that “progress” has its advantages in speed but has hampered artistry many would say. But that is another topic. Always good to see younger people get turned on to timeless music. Look at Pet Sounds songs next..and if brave “SMiLE”

The theremin is very important to the sound of this song. It is that high pitch background wailing instrument.

If you want more of this psychedelic sound from them, check out the "Smile Sessions", far too much to explain in one comment, but it was a failed project of theirs from 1967 that was revived and finished by Brian Wilson in 2004 as a solo album, the sessions released in 2011 and follow his track listing. If you still want a psychedelic sound, but more oriented towards classical music, give their album "Pet Sounds" from 1966 a try. Many consider it to be the second greatest album of all time and it was highly influential in the music industry, inspiring the Beatles to put out Sgt. Pepper's. And then if you want something that's more easy listening, simple, and nostalgic-sounding, give any of their pre Pet Sounds albums a try. Obviously there's more material past the 60's, but most of it is past their peak artistic ability as a band when they had fallen on hard times. Exceptions to this include Sunflower (1970), Surf's Up (1971), Holland (1973), and Love You (1977). Anyway, enough rambling, great reaction, they're my #1 favorite band!

20/20 (1969) is one of the strongest post-Pet Sounds albums. Some of their finest music is from the 70s as those albums you listed prove. An underrated one is Light Album (1979).

@@bookhouseboy280 20/20 is a great album too, I should've included that as well. However, I personally don't particularly like L.A. (Light Album). I might need to give it another listen, but it just didn't really click with me as a whole and I felt like the track listing could have been arranged a little better. I think "Here Comes The Night" should have been cut down with the near eleven minute version released as a single and also not placed in the middle of the album. On a positive note, I remember "Good Timin'" and "Lady Lynda" not being too bad. Those are just my brief criticisms, but if you like it, all the more power to you!

Brian Wilson stopped touring, so while the band was on tour, Brian Wilson stayed behind and created the album Pet Sounds. Arguably the best album of all time.

Good reaction. They also have an album called Party where they're in the studio with a bunch of friends just singing some of their songs. I'd recommend Barbara Ann from the Party album after you hear the regular version first. It's just an audio version, so no video, but you can hear how much fun they're having.

Interesting fact..Brian Wilson was (is) such a perfectionist that he used The Wrecking Crew on pretty much all the Beach Boys recordings. Of course the actual band members knew how to play and did play at all live performances but because he needed the recordings to be perfect he didn't want to waste time and money recording what he deemed to be mediocre. Great documentary on the Wrecking Crew I would recommend any music enthusiast to watch. I think most people would be surprised to see how many music groups used the Wrecking Crew for all their recordings. Too many to mention. Something else I have just discovered is that most of these music videos we are listening to today have been auto tuned and "tweaked". Not really hearing anything the way we heard it back in the good old days, you know the 60's, 70's and even the 80's. Back when music was music. Thought it was interesting one of your reactions I listened to talked about synthesizers. Not sure they were used much before the Cars. You gotta check out the Cars. Moving in Stereo if you want to hear synthesizers.

Brian Wilson was a genius at writing almost all there songs, but in the late 60's he had a nervous break down. If you want to know how watch the movie Love & mercy from 2014. Kevin Spacey played Brian Wilson.
