The Beatles are like the foundation of modern music. The greatest band of all time, I could comment like 30 tracks that are bangers. I'm 27 and from South America and I still think no other musicians come close to their genius, the impact they had on the world is legendary. If there was only one band I was allowed to listen to for the rest of my life it's the Beatles, and it's not even close. They are music. Here are some songs you need to listen to if you haven't already: Let It Be, Hey Jude, Come Together, Help!, Eleanor Rigby, While My Guiter Gently Weeps, Yesterday, Something, All You Need is Love.

Ahh The Beatles! This is the lads right at the end of the career. They recorded one more album together, but this was pretty much the last time they were seen in public as a band. It was an impromptu gig on top of the head quarters in London. You’ve seen the end…make sure you go back and listen to the journey, even if it’s not for reaction just listen in your own time! On the keys was a man name Billy Preston. He was a child prodigy classical pianist, but he broke away to play mainly gospel and blues on Hammond organ. He became friends with The Beatles at some stage and they asked him to play on the Let it Be album because Paul, who usually played the piano parts had too much to do on bass and guitar. Billy added so much to that record, and whilst The Beatles previously had other people play on records with them, Billy Preston was the only one they ever credited as a member of the band.

The thing I always think about with the beatles is that they were so revolutionary, so groundbreaking in so many different ways. They changed the way songs were written, recorded, produced and performed. When I listen to them I always think that when they first came out, no one had ever heard anything like it before. Girls would literally faint in the audience. Apparently when their shows were over, the venue would smell like urine because members of the audience would just piss all over themselves.

Great reaction! So many great songs to choose from. The Beatles are the biggest selling music artist of all time (of any genre). It would be fun to see you react to some later Beatles songs like "Come Together" , "Something", and "The Long and Winding Road", and some early Beatles like "Money" and their live appearance on the Ed Sullivan show doing the song "Twist and Shout". Peace

It would be nice if YOU would get over only listening to later recordings, and all of it cherry-picked at that. One needs to listen to whole albums, intact, and in order of release, because the way you're doing it is self-deprivation.

The Beatles are the most influential music act in history. Lots of people surprisingly put them down after hearing a few of their early songs, and don't give their later stuff a chance after that. The members are John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Every member has written and sung for the band. Since this is a John song, I'll recommend a song from the other members. Oh! Darling (Paul) While My Guitar Gently Weeps (George) (it's important that you do the White album version, and not the Love version with the music video) Octopus's Garden (Ringo) And if you want a more experimental song, the song Rain is a good choice, released at the near exact middle point of their career. That's one of my favorites.

This was 3 years after they stopped touring, and on a cold January, drizzly day in England on a rooftop for an impromptu concert. Paul giggles when the police show up, hoping for a big shut down, but they politely asked them to wrap it up soon. Their early shows where are where Beatlemania is more prevalent. Their stadium shows at Shea, or Candlestick are good ones to look for. Plus the early shows in England are great too, that is where they met Billy Preston (playing for Little Richard then) and he joined them on the rooftop for this performance.

One Beatles song you should review, "Helter Skelter" is considered to be the very first heavy metal/punk rock song, by contemporary standards (loud banging instrumentals with screaming vocals), long before punk rock was a classification of music. Paul McCartney heard an interview of Pete Townsend of The Who boasting that their latest record was the loudest, rawest, and dirtiest (not x-rated) song ever made (or something like that). Upon hearing of this, Paul felt The Beatles need to top this with something of their own. So he produced Helter Skelter.

In this clip you can see the keyboardist Billy Preston, a good friend of the Beatles (special story in the Beatles universe) for a moment from 2:25 min. Preston, himself a professional musician before, had his own successful career after working with the Beatles (including two No. 1 hits in the USA) and was always a welcome session musician for many artists. This so-called "rooftop concert" in London, a total of about 45 minutes long, filmed on the roof of their Apple studio, shot for a cinema film, "Let it be" (1970 in cinemas) was the Beatles' last appearance as a Band in public in January 1969. Peter Jackson, the 'Lord of the Rings' director, compiled several hours of unreleased material from the recording sessions a year ago and released it on "Disney+". Not just interesting for Beatles fans, but generally exciting to watch, how a song is created, who incorporates which ideas, how the band chemistry develops. Also, since it's about the Beatles, it's extremely historical footage.

On the 30th of January 1969, the Beatles performed an impromptu concert from the rooftop of their Apple Corps headquarters at 3 Savile Row, in central London's office and fashion district. Joined by keyboardist Billy Preston, the band played a 42-minute set before the Metropolitan Police arrived and asked them to reduce the volume. It was the final public performance of their career. On April 10th, 1970 Paul McCartney gives an interview and said he's leaving the band. Even though John actually had quit a few months earlier. The Beatles were no more.

My favorite Beatles track ever is Paperback Writer just because the harmonies and the rocking bass line just jam a finger on the dopamine release button in my brain. Free as a Bird is probably my second favorite. It gets a degree of backlash because it was mastered 15 years after Lennon was murdered so Lennon’s vocals are only from a demo. I think it’s a beautiful song. Either would be great listens for you if you don’t know them. On hip-hop, I’d still love a reaction/breakdown of PM Dawn’s ‘Plastic’. Been asking off and on for a couple years, but I’m patient and you’re busy so all good. 😉

I'd definitely be up for more Beatles reactions. As you may be aware, this was from the famous free 'Rooftop Performance' and was their last public live gig together (they had to give up touring a few years earlier due to escalating Beatlemania-related insanity that made it a misery rather than a joy for them to play live), to concentrate on deeper studio experimentation, producing such masterpieces as Sergeant Pepper and Abbey Road. To get a feel of the whole span of band's years as recording artists, you might go next to an early live performance on Swedish TV, 1963, just as Beatlemania was beginning to blow out beyond the bounds of the UK and into Europe, before it hit the US in '64. You see the 'mop-top' boys - only about 6 years but also several lifetimes earlier in experiences - thrilling a young audience with their high energy pop tunes, ending with a classic screamer from Paul, channelling Little Richard in a knockout rendition of Long Tall Sally. (Unfortunately the first number, She Loves You, is blocked, but just scroll on past it to where the audio comes back.) Here, rock history comes alive. Then, I'd go to the other end, and listen to Side Two of Abbey Road, the last album they recorded. The whole side. Or you could just do 'the Medley', but I recommend the whole side. Don't try and pause after each track to comment, because the really great thing about this culmination of their recording career is the dreamlike journey it takes you on, like wandering through an enchanted castle, opening doors and peeping into different rooms, hearing snatches of strange and beautiful, hypnotic, sometimes silly, sometimes very human and heart-breaking music. If this initial toe-dipping exercise piques your interest, you might then want to fill in the space between those two poles with a chronological exploration of their albums and singles, or selections thereof, from 1962 to 1970, to track that extraordinary progression in more detail. If only able to do selections as reactions, maybe ask the audience if you need help deciding what are the unmissable tracks to listen to from each album and era. Or just listen to everything. There are many worse ways to spend a day or a few hours on this planet.

In listening to older rock, you'll find there's an inflection point around 1965. Prior to 1965 it's mostly teeny bopper music, dance craze music, novelty music. But beginning with a few songs in 1965 a maturation begins, it catches fire with all the top bands, and it's in full swing by 1967. The Beatles are part of it. The first glimmers of change toward artistic maturity begin with their Rubber Soul album (1965), followed by Revolver (1966). After that, the Beatles are in full swing, exploring music with more artistic quality and no longer aiming to produce pop hits for teenagers. A lot of people used to cite the 1967 album "Sgt. Pepper" as when music changed, but it just depends on where you draw the line. I think music changed with Bob Dylan's move from acoustic folk guitar to electric guitar, first seen in his hit "Like A Rolling Stone" (1965). That's another frequently cited inflection point. That's when some rock music took a step away from pop, toward art and personal and social themes.

You should really check out the Beatles' song "This Boy" from the "Ed Sullivan Show" It is one of the best songs that features John Lennon's amazing voice. He goes from a melodic song, singing with Paul and George, and then breaks out into his high-pitched raunchy voice, and immediately back to the melodic voice with Paul and George. It's an awesome performance. Additionally, you see John and Paul exchanging smiles throughout the performance. It's fantastic.

this is one of my all time favourites , it was recorded on the roof of the HMV store in London, and the police were trying to get them to stop playing , as there were complaints from other local businesses , how fucking crazy is that , they were getting a free live performance from probably the greatest band of all time . i love your channel Cliff , you a top bloke !

@guy Fairclough. You are INCORRECT! This was NOT recorded "on the roof of the HMV store in London"!! WHERE, I am wondering, did you hear that? It was on the roof of the BEATLES' APPLE OFFICES at 3 SAVILLE ROW in London, which is a district containing a lot of tailors and businesses.
