Sometime around 1968 (I was 13 then), my older brother asked me who the top three bands were. I said "The Rolling Stones, the Who, and the Doors." He asked, "What about The Beatles?" I looked at him with a quizzical look on my face. Of course, the Beatles, but they were so far beyond anyone else that they defied classification.

FYI: The Beatles completely influenced Pink Floyd! In 1967, they came into the studio and listened to them recording their masterpiece Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Pink Floyd borrowed lots of The Beatles' recording technique and style.

Actually, John Lennon deliberately cut the end of the tape to get the reaction that everyone has when they hear it. Remember this album came out when 8 track cassette players were the standard car and home tape player. And they were notorious for eating your tapes!

I'm sure you and other young people can be very appreciative of their artistry. But it wasn't just their music. Yes, they changed/grew their music throughout the decade, leading the artform through a maturing of the rock genre. Each new album seemed to inspire other artists to follow their lead. But for us Boomer fans, they influenced us in cultural change - hair, clothing, politics, etc. And we didn't tire of them - we anticipated each new album for their next innovation.

Imagine their every LP being #1 on BOTH the AM radio LP and Singles charts, because every track of every LP was played on the radio, to which listeners responded with requests. Imagine walking through a neighborhood in Summer, 1967 and hearing "Sgt. Pepper's" coming out of EVERY window. Imagine the major FM radio station, WBCN, playing the entire "The Beatles" (all four sides) without commercials or other interruptions except to announce the next of the four sides to be played. And doing that every weekday night for two weeks before the LP was released. And then on those weekends playing all the tracks from that LP randomly, mixed with earlier "Beatles" tracks. And "The Beatles" never peaked: they kept evolving, and growing, and getting LARGER -- which is BIGGER than HUGE -- until they broke up.

Listen to the (any) album 3 times before you make up your mind. At the end of the third listen, you will know if it's for you. With the first listen, listen to the music. The medley on side 2 has reached the pinnacle of Beatles recordings history. Even though Lennon has said he thought much of the album was throwaway garbage, it is The Beatles' swan song. When they sung "The End" they knew it was the end of the band and they wanted to go out on a high note. Abbey Road achieved that.

@@treetopjones737 And yet, while they were making this album, Paul was bringing in songs such as "Maybe I'm Amazed" and "Come And Get It" while George offered up classics like "All Things Must Pass" and "Isn't A Pity", none of which John was interested in working on. John can moan all he likes about having to work on "granny songs" such as "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" but what was he bringing to the party instead? During the Get Back sessions, Paul was offering classics such as "Let It Be", "The Long And Winding Road", "Get Back" and George was throwing in the likes of "For You Blue", "Isn't It A Pity" and "I, Me Mine". John was producing next to nothing apart from "Don't Let Me Down" (which was going nowhere after days of John's farting about. Then Paul took command of it and made it a classic. Meanwhile John eventually coughed up the vacuous filler track called "Dig A Pony". John was just jealous and lazy. Paul was ambitious and hard-working and John couldn't or wouldn't rise to the challenge of matching him (unlike in the early years when John wrote most of the A-sides of the hit singles.) "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" isn't the greatest moment in the history of The Beatles but it's a million times better than the "Two Virgins" or "Life With The Lions" utter shite which John was putting out as "art" at that time.

It was a big hit for Shirley Bassey and was also covered by Elvis Presley, Ray Charles and Smokey Robinson (all legends in popular music). Later on in his career, after he'd been better advised, he introduced the song in his live shows as a song by "George Harrison of The Beatles." @@dulcetghost If you have, (I am writing this on Jan. 22, 2024, I hope you started with their first album "PLEASE PLEASE ME" and worked your way chronologically as they were released from 1963- 1970. It is the ONLY way you can appreciate how there music in each single and album evolved and progressed in just 7 1/2 years. WE couldn't WAIT for their next single and album come out to see what they were going to do next. It was exciting and they NEVER got BORING, they were so versatile and did all sorts of music.

Good honest review. The Beatles music is different in many ways and very diversified. The more you listen to it, the more you will understand it, and generally the more you will like it. Many younger reactors are not familiar with the way The Beatles are able to make different transitions within a song, which they are masters at, but once they get used to it they love it. Also, uninterrupted listening with headphones on with reveal the musical magic they include in their songs. That being said, some don't like transitions and some only like harder rock, so they will never appreciate a good percentage of The Beatles catalog. Hope you will be able to listen to more of their catalog, especially Rubber Soul onward.

Listen to the album with your eyes closed and with headphones and listen (Sun King) to the far away crickets as the music gets louder and louder as if you are walking up to a building and then opening the door. Listen as the music and guitars go left to right in your brain and then right to left. It was mind blowing at the time.

I bought all the albums as they came out in 1987, and I can tell you, the later remasters sounded clearer. Early CD's just don't sound as good as newer CD's. Now the remixed versions I would stay away from. There are slight differences from the original versions, but they all sound great. I've bought them all, from original albums on vinyl to the MOBILE FIDELITY Original Master Recordings vinyl from 1983, to all versions of CD's. Enjoy.

Yes, Beatles influence lots of music including Pink Floyd and Queen. The multi-part songs on the second half of Abbey Road started even further back on the 1967 Sgr Pepper song "A Day in a Life". Go back to earlier Beatles album like Revolver and Sgt Pepper and you''ll hear their influences on many future pop and progressive music.

Grab a glass of wine or two - sit back and get comfortable, dim the lights etc You gave about 5 or 6 songs a thumbs up - most albums have one or two good songs - puts the Beatles ahead of the crowd Also most albums get better with a few listens - You might find yourself getting into it a bit more on listen 4 or 5.

That's how the Beatles sounded in 1969. The Let It Be album was recorded in early 69, then Abbey Road. They were done after that. A year earlier, they made the White Album. One of the most influential albums ever.

Something won the Ivor Novello for the best song musically and lyrically of 1969 and was covered by over 150 artists by the end of the 1970s. Widely regarded as one of the greatest love songs ever written, so probably quite successful.

Every album is quite different, especially starting with "Rubber Soul." Many consider "Revolver," the album preceding "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," to be their best. For someone not growing up during that time, it's almost impossible to understand how revolutionary, impactful, and influential they were. There are magazines that even include them in their lists of the greatest events in human history, editors thereof, obviously headed by baby boomers.

@@treetopjones737 Not before they were teenagers, Paul met John first when Paul was 15 and John was almost 17. Paul was already friends with George and shortly after, introduced George to John. John was skeptical at first, to let George in the band because he was so young ( a year younger that Paul) until George played an instrumental rock song called "RAUNCHY" all the way through. Paul got into the band when Paul played "20 Flight Rock" for John. John was impressed because Paul knew ALL the words to it, AND he knew how to tune a guitar properly.

The Beatles are like peeling back an onion...it's incredible how many layers there are in their music and their story. The best way to APPRECIATE The Beatles is to examine them in their own time and understand their journey as it unfolded, all the while being conscious of the music of the time. You really can't begin to understand their impact judging their music by everything that has come since. They paved the way in a MAJOR way regarding the entire industry. They developed organically and untrained. Incredibly clever, inventive buggers.

Also, as is true with most music as voluminous as the Beatles catalog, there is an acclimation period. Certain songs have to sink in, sometimes after repeated listens. I've found many times that songs that didn't grab me the first few listens ended up being favorites. Also, ponder this one. The time span between recording their first album and their last was about 6 1/2 years. THAT is unfathomable and will never happen again. Explosive!

Most of the songs on side 2 are a medley. They move one to the other with no breaks. This was a first for the Beatles and not common with any rock band in the 60s. It like a precursor of the rock opera.

David Gilmour has done a lot of collaborations with Paul McCartney over the years, starting in the 70s up to the 2000s. They even made an album and live dvd together with Run Devil Run. And songs that used to be favorites are still being shuffeled around for other ones out of their massive collection, repetitive listening will make you discover all the nuances. I was 10 when The Beatles were on Ed. The first movie I ever saw was; "A Hard Days Night". I grew up with the Beatles defining the world. I have every album they ever made....now hanging on my wall. At 70+ yrs now, I often weep as I watch others enjoy listening to "The Beatles".... grateful I got to hear their music right out of the sleeve. They were incredible...and oh so special. With each one's passing, my heart breaks and weeps. I'm so glad the younger generations are still enjoying The Lads from LIverpool. Peace....!

Abbey Road is my favourite album. It's hard to imagine listening to it for the first time. I bought it when I was 10-12 yrs old (maybe), and it took me some time to get into it. At that time I only bought Beatles albums (and my older brother bought them too - till we had them all), and I probably only bought 3 a year. So when I got a Beatles album, I'd hammer it. Basically Abbey Road took the longest to get into and gave the most back. It's weird to think now that most people will only hear something once or twice and decide it's not for them. Incidentally, it took me some time to get into OK Computer, but it was one of the few tapes I had in my car at the time. First album I bought was Sgt Pepper, purely because they didn't have Help, which I'd heard on a tape from the library (can you even imagine such a time?). My favourite song at that point I think was Another Girl, though The Night Before I also liked a lot. Probably not in my top 50 Beatles songs nowadays, but I still like them. The White Album is also often my favourite album - it switches with Abbey Road

Yes, they pretty much invented or formulated the genres that were the jumping off points for all those later bands and artists you love. You'll find very few of the great musical acts of the 70s that didn't get inspired in the first place by the Beatles to take up music, and to experiment with all the possibilities they heard in their ever-evolving, ground-breaking music. As Brian May (of Queen) put it, "The Beatles opened the doors and we all just walked through."

This album is an example of why I still buy physical media. You Never Give Me Your Money through Bathroom Window are essentially one suite and Golden Slumbers through The End are a second, but each portion gets a track. In fact portions of each medley were in fact recorded together as one song but simply listed separately on the track listing. When they are played on the radio though, they are played as the medleys (some stations paly both medleys straight through as one whole song instead of two songs.. or eight songs). ITunes has a feature that when you rip a CD into your music library, you can join tracks so suites can be played as intended. It was a feature probably intended for classical music, but there are so many songs in rock that are multiple tracks that are almost always played together as one song. Just off the top of my head: Sgt. If you don't get it I get that. I started listening to the Beatles in '64 when I was 11 and listened to them for 6 more years until they broke up in 1970. The music that they produced played on the radio and it was the the soundtrack of my teenage years along with everyone else I knew. They grew musically and so did I as each new album came out. We listened to this music and lived with it for years. So we kind of hoped and thought that it would never stop but then in '69 it did and it was like loosing a friend. Now you can go to a store and buy all the albums and listen to them in a week. We lived with this music and listened to it and waited months or years for the next album. So I guess my point is you had to live with this music and experience all the wild stuff that was going on while this music was being made. It really reflected the times but those times are gone now. So for someone of your generation it's like someone showing you a faded photo of some forgotten time and trying to explain what was happening at that time from just that old photo. It's like listening to the soundtrack to great movie but without the movie itself. It's just not the same.

You can't listen to this album, or any album, and talk all the way through it, or be on your phone. The thing about any Beatles album is that they inspired just about all musicians that came after. Their music was so new and different every band of that time and even up to this day were inspired by them. The Beatles were and are the greatest of all time, and there will never be another band that was as creative and influential as The Beatles. You are wrong when you say you don't think anybody listens to Abbey Road all the way through. Millions of people listen to it every day, especially the medley on the second side. You just think nobody listens to it because you don't listen to it. Abbey Road is a masterpiece from beginning to end. You should listen to it without talking...close your eyes and just listen. It really is amazing. Ok. Just saw your ending and I'm glad you took the time to listen. Many young people don't ever give older music a chance. So thanks again.

Roger Waters said that the Beatles, during their SGT's Peppr's Album, were god-like to the young Pink Floyd, because the Beatles were creating sounds never heard before, in 67... THAT will be the ONLY way she can see how their music evolved and progressed in such a short amount of time. It's silly to skip around their catalogue out of order, or to totally skip entire albums. To me it's like reading a novel by starting in the middle, or at the end of the book. Missing the plot development which starts at the beginning.

I liked the honest review. The importance of The Beatles can never really be overstated, but aside from that, they're just really really good too. I think it would be neat if you gave 'The White album' a review/reaction. It's an incredible double album that has a little bit of everything for everyone-- their diverse songwriting prowess is on full display. Slight disclaimer: the album can get a tad weird (that's a plus to some of us though).

Got to say, I love the honesty. It irks me to watch the "reactors" on KZbin listen to a song as if it's the best thing they've ever heard, every damn song they listen to. Honesty is refreshing, it's nice to hear what you don't care for as well as what you actually like. I'm old, so I listen to old music, I love the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, etc... I got sick of watching people react to them and give those pandering "best thing I've ever heard" reviews... it's just not possible to love Led Zeppelin and something like Dolly Parton, equally, but they act as if they do.

It is entirely possible to like, if not "love" opposite things. Last but not least, the Beatles deliver many different genres, for which they have become favorites of critics. It's absolutely mesmerizing to hear e.g. "Within you, without you", "Rocky Raccoon", "Helter skelter", "And I love her" back to back. Or jazz, folk, rap, hard rock, country, van Beethoven, pop etc, back to back. Happens non-stop in my music library.

My first time hearing Elton John's "Captain Fantastic" I was not really blown away like I was with "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". But after the second time... Wow!!! Hey. Great job on your review. Beatles fans can be tough and very opinionated( myself included) If you liked a few of the songs it's worth going back and starting with them from the beginning... every song on every album is different. They evolved so much from one album to the next that it makes real fun listening to go back start at the beginning and go on that journey with them just like the whole world did at the time. Abbey road was their last album as a band. By the time you get back I bet it would sound very different. There's heavier darker stuff on some of the earlier albums. Likewise each member has their own voice Roughly speaking .. Ringo up beat and silly John darker and heavier Paul with the ballads and jazzy stuff And George with his unique stuff that I vibe. Lots of albums. So many songs. You wondered why they sound like other bands. Beatles first.. EVERYONE else after One you realize that you can hear their influence in just about everything it seems And bonus, being young and skeptical and new to the beatles means lots of content and a huge ready made audience..lots of views and subscribers that want to watch their favorite band win you over. Start at the beginning. "Please Please me" And slowly make your way through all the way back to Abbey Road ( Then" Let it be" which came out after they broke up.) Keep up the good work. Abbey Road is on many lists in the top 3 albums of all time probably up with Thriller and Dark Side of the Moon. What is worth noting is that after Let It Be The Beatles were as good as broken up and hated each other, but they got their shit together to do one last record despite their differences and gave us the magnificent Abbey Rd. This is the height of professionalism in any industry.

Thanks to modern technology, you can isolate the songs you like to make a smaller album of just the good songs. Back around 1980, I bought a turntable that I could program to only play specific tracks. This was the first album I tried that on. Perhaps the turntable was designed with this album in mind. You are not the only person to have that opinion. There are other people who prefer Paul McCartney's songs to John Lennon's.

I appreciate you doing this, especially if you're not a fan of the Beatles (and I appreciate you none the less recognizing the significance of the mark they left on music). That being said, the whole album IS good, but if you're not a fan of particular styles, then you're not a fan of particular styles, so some of the songs might not grab you. I am a fan of the Beatles, but there are some songs I don't like as much as others. Even though I still like them. The brilliance of the Beatles was that they were all over the map when it came to musical styles. They were musically curious and willing to try anything. And they had the talent and creativity to pull it off. Abbey Road is an example of that. The first four songs alone illustrate it's going to be swerving all over the road. And gloriously so.

Frank Sinatra was particularly impressed with "Something", calling it "the greatest love song of the past 50 years" and did a cover himself. Beatles pioneered the concept of concept album, the reason why not every single song in the album sounds the same and might not stand out on their while playing individually, hence they are to be listened as whole, to get a comprehensive sound and feel. The Beatles taught the world that the purpose of an Album is to take you on a journey. Dark Side of the moon, The Wall are the aftermath of Beatles' influence.

When you listen to an album like this you need to actually listen to it. That's not intended to be rude, but you really have to listen to the intricacies of their compositions. If you don't have a great music system use headphones. If you are still experimental on The Beatles... Try "Rubber Soul" (1965) and "Revolver" (1966) its when Psychedelia was just starting. I really appreciate you at least giving The Beatles a listen. I guess some people may not like them... but I'll never understand why🤷🏼‍♂ Fun Fact... The Beatles song "Yesterday" is the most covered song ever written😎

This was fun to watch :). I enjoyed how many times you said, "I like this!" - more than you realized. The Beatles were very influential on the bands you mentioned - and many others. And for side 2, those songs were grouped together on purpose. We often call them "The medleys". It was Paul's idea to combine them - and he did the same thing with a few songs when he was with "Wings".

You might have appreciated the Beatles' Abbey Road more if you knew some of the background story behind the lyrics for each song. One in particular, "She came in through the bathroom window", is explained in detail in the novel, "The Memoirs of Billy Shears". Although the author of record for "Memoirs' is Thomas E. Uharriet, its real author is the person we know today as Paul McCartney. From page 236 of 'Memoirs': ". . . In the song that references Jane Asher's ladder use, "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window." I sing parallel lines with the identical meaning that Paul McCartney talks to me: "Sunday's on the phone to Monday; Tuesday's on the phone to me." "I might as well explain more of that song. The silver spoon was not, as some people claim, intended to be a drug reference. It was about Jane having been born into affluence. "She said she'd always been a dancer." I called her a dancer to take listeners off her trail. Jane Asher had always been, let us set it right, an actress. She was born in 1946, and had her first movie appearance in 1952. Letting her career take priority over relationships, she was always off somewhere filming. I describe it as "She worked at fifteen clubs a day."

@Richard-sc7yq Also, the line "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" refers to one of the fans that hung around out side the gate of Paul's home on Cavendish Ave, not far from Abbey Road. While they were out, she saw a ladder leaning against his home and noticed that a window on the second floor was slightly open. It was the bathroom window, which the fan climbed through. She stole some photos and later, when she heard that Paul was pleading to the other girls that frequently hung out there, that these were very special photos and if they knew who took them, could they please return them to him, which that girl eventually did. That was the inspiration for that line. lol
