After Pattie Boyd broke up with George, she married Eric Clapton. George wrote "I Need You," "Something," "For You Blue," (all performed by the Beatles) and "So Sad" for Pattie. Eric Clapton wrote for her "Layla," "Wonderful Tonight," and "She's Waiting." She had a brief fling with Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, who wrote "Mystifies Me," and "Breathe on Me" for her.

George was the youngest of the Beatles and did not wrting until years after John and Paul. So his early work, as he was learning, was up against two of the most successful songwriters of the time. There are videos of him discussing his lyric problems on this song with John and Paul and them giving him advice on how to get past the block of a missing word, so it was not like they were unsupportive. Ringo wrote Octopus's Garden which is so Ringo. There is film of George helping him with that. They were all still in their 20's when this was happening and there were all different kinds of pressures happening as well as having had a kind of fame that was arguably unprecedented happen extremely quickly at a very young age.

@@newcjswift4516 did they really do much before 63? When their debut snd sophomore are filled with covers, i can't imagine they had that many original songs in the 50s, I'm sure George was writing stuff but kept quiet. @@DerekDerekDerekDerekDerekDerek Yes they did write a lot of songs in those very early years, but as Paul as said that most of them were not really that good, that they would even record it, or do them live. After all, they were teenagers and learning. Paul did one of his early songs "I Lost My Little Girl" on MTV'S "UNPLUGGED" kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGaceGaXjbJ1fpI Unfortunately, whoever posted this cut out Paul talking about it before he performs it. The middle section where he sings "Gather round people Ill tell you 'bout the very first song I wrote....." WAS NOT part of the song. He wrote that when he decided to perform the only part of the song he had written as a teenager. It's cute.

George’s songs are different from the others- he wrote a lot in a minor key. You should react to his “All Things Must Pass” album. Lyrically and musically it is unsurpassed. I got it in high school(early 1970’s) and it remains one of my all time favorite albums. Every song is a gem, and the third album of jam sessions is amazing. To me, George surpassed John and “Paul” in his solo work.

Sinatra acknowledged the songs greatness "Something" (1969). But Sinatra didn’t just sing it; he said it was “one of the best love songs” ever written. As you mentioned when George originally wrote the song, he had someone like Ray Charles singing it in his mind. Charles did record the song not long after Abbey Road was released.

I believe the Beatles contract stated that George would have 2 compositions per LP and Ringo would have one. George wrote many compositions while with the Beatles but not included on the LP's. So, when the Beatles broke up and George did his first solo adventure, he had plenty of material to put those songs for a 3LP set (All Things Must Pass). I don't know about Joe Cocker singing "Something", but he did a cover version of "She Came Into The Bathroom Window'" which was on that same album, Abbey Road.

You should watch the Peter Jackson film, "Get Back"! It shows the Beatles working on the new songs for what would eventually become the "Let It Be" album but during that time they were all dabbling in song-writing that would become those tracks from Abbey Road, as well! That film is so cool to watch, when you realize where they would end up, within the year. They were struggling to make the Let It Be film project work -- they were supposed to play a live performance of the new songs at the end but they only gave themselves, like, 3 or 4 weeks to work it all out -- but they worked through their issues and it turned out to be a fantastic album. The original film was not as good as it could have been which is why Peter Jackson made "Get Back". He definitely showed much more of what was going on with the band, both positive and negative, and it shows their friendship and brotherhood winning the day, more so than the original film form 1970. Awesome 3-part mini-series/film!

It's not John & Paul's fault that George didn't step up as a song writer sooner, in their career. John & Paul had a synergy and productive dynamic between them (and as individuals, because of their friendship and collaborative partnership), so they did what they were good at, and enjoyed, doing. George may have felt insecure about his song-writing chops in comparison but only George could solve that problem. I don't think they were actively rejecting his ideas but more of that George didn't really push for them because he was always second-guessing himself. It was a difficult situation, no doubt, but it took George a long while to resolve it because it was his burden to bear, no one else's. When he was ready, he showed out, and became the good/great song writer that he was meant to be!
