Well, they recorded ten of the 14 tracks in one day, with this being the last. The other four tracks were from their two previously released singles. But laying down ten tracks in one mammoth double session is still hella impressive.

Yes, the girls went nuts - but so did the boys! The Beatles were never just some 'boy band' as some people nowadays imagine, manufactured primarily as eye candy/ lust objects for impressionable young women. You can see young men jumping up and down, waving their arms about, cheering and even, in some cases, dancing in the aisles at Beatles concerts. They used to say: all the girls wanted to date a Beatle, and all the boys wanted to *be* one. In fact, the Beatles were the main reason popular music grew into the gigantic and diverse industry it is today; once they'd been exposed to the Beatles magic, thousands of teenage lads instantly dedicated themselves to finding a way to acquire a musical instrument and form a band. It was as if the Beatles pulled out a plug that had, unbeknownst to all, been damming up an entire generation's youthful energy, creativity and joy. Maybe you had to be there/ live it, to understand... But as Brian May (of Queen) put it, "The Beatles opened the doors, and we all just walked through..."

This is what the Beatles learned to do while performing on stage for up to 8 hours a night, week after week in Hamburg, Germany. That's when they became the kind of rock and roll band no one had ever heard before. And after George Martin recorded their first album, basically just capturing their live stage show, the whole world was able to discover what they'd been missing. This was a new sound the Beatles made, with Twist and Shout, with Please Please Me, with She Loves You, and all the rest. Those four guys invented modern rock, starting in 1962.

The Beatles worshipped Little Richard. Paul worked hard to copy his style on hard-driving songs like "Long Tall Sally." The first time John heard a Little Richard song it left him speechless (a near-miraculous ocurrance). Someone told John he found a singer better than Elvis, and John basically said "bullshit!" So the guy put on a Little Richard record and it was like a religious experience for John. He talked about it in an interview years later. I'm quoting from memory, so please forgive any inaccuracies in the quote. "I didn't want to say anything against Elvis, even in my mind. First Elvis, and now this? How could they both be in my life at the same time?" In 1962 the Beatles got to meet Little Richard and be a supporting act for him, first in Liverpool and then for a couple of weeks in Hamburg. They were ecstatic. Little Richard adored them too, gave interviews talking about how great they sounded.

@@gregoryeatroff8608 It wasn’t just any Little Richard track - it was “Long Tall Sally”, the final song they performed in their final touring performance at. Candlestick Park on August 29, 1966. It’s been said that Paul performing the song during the Quarrymen days that solidified for John he made the right choice in inviting him into the group.

Yes, John Lennon sung/screamed his voice to destruction on this song but that was Paul McCartney doing that stratospheric scream in the big build-up, in the middle! Woo! Hey, if you want to hear more of Paul letting it rip, check out The Beatles version of "Long Tall Sally" and also "I Saw Her Standing There"!! Both are total rockers and Sir Paul just destroys and screams his face off! Also listen to the studio version of "Hey Jude" and "Oh Darling". Paul is SICK on those songs!

I'm just to the part where you doing song research and yeah that was John Lennon on the lead vocal, but I tell you what, I'm quite impressed that you picked out Paul McCartney at that moment when he went up perfectly in tune on a shriek at the top at a really high A, an A5 for anyone that knows that reference scale, and that is not just falsetto but what nowadays they would call a head-voice chest-voice mix. But it's just perfect in that moment. It's got so much resonance and so much power and it's almost a whistle register, something that you don't encounter all that much except among little tiny kids testing out their lungs, laugh. Good catch. Check out the Beatles song Oh Darling, but really this crops up here and there throughout the Beatles category and a little bit in his very early solo stuff. But this was him in his prime. Finally, that walk away moment that you did, of course it was really effective and I loved it. It makes me happy that you noticed that about the vocal. But there is a certain irony in it for me because that is exactly what happened at the end of the very very first reaction that I ever watched, which then made me follow him, and he was kind of a legend at the time, and that got me going down the rabbit hole of reactions even to begin with. It's No Life Shaq reacting to the studio version of the early Lynyrd Skynyrd hit, Freebird. Once I followed him, I then found out that 3 days before that he had reacted to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Simple Man, and it was the first time he'd ever encountered that. He mostly reviewed hip-hop, which was his normal, but he was starting to branch out into older rock music. It was so priceless, and both of the reactions were just iconic in the end. Check them out if you have not. Here's the one that I saw first, which I believe was his second reaction to Lynyrd Skynyrd, although it's possible I have them reversed and Simple Man was the first one. It's been so long, but either of them in a row are just really kind of early on in this genre of reacting to rock music by younger people: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHi3knRsmZh1jrM&pp=ygUlTm8gbGlmZSBTaGFjayBMeW55cmQgU2t5bnlyZCByZWFjdGlvbg%3D%3D

The Beatles recorded this (their first) album in one day. They saved this song until the end of the day because of the strain they knew it would give to John's throat. So, after singing and recording all day, John's voice was already pretty strained by the time they got around to this song. That's why John always said he could have sung it better (if his voice had been fresh). He said he was mainly just shouting the song out. But he gave it 1,000 percent on the first take. There wasn't enough left for a second take. For me, it's the passion that sells it. I'd rather hear a passionate singer than technically perfect singer every time. If you want to hear and see the best Beatles live version of this song (IMO), I would suggest the Royal Variety Performance. This happened right as they were taking off in England, but before they had conquered the US and then the world. They were performing to royalty and a more reserved crowd... and John couldn't resist engaging in some class humor to start off: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2abnn1pp7uSgrM

Seriously, great reaction. Just as a reactor yourself, and I buried this reference in the previous comment near the bottom, but if you're not already super familiar, check out one of the early reactions to classic rock that I saw, that turns out to be almost legendary, and it truly is what got me going down the rabbit hole of checking out reactions. As a musician and someone who was around back then as well, it's just really fascinating to me. No Life Shaq reacting to Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd for the first time ever hearing Skynyrd. And then 3 days later he did Lynyrd Skynyrd Simple Man, and that also became an absolutely famous early reaction: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHi3knRsmZh1jrM&pp=ygUlTm8gbGlmZSBTaGFjayBMeW55cmQgU2t5bnlyZCByZWFjdGlvbg%3D%3D

That was Paul doing the high part. If you listen closely John, Paul and George are all singing that part where there is the high note. I believe Paul made that high pitch scream. If you really want to hear what Paul McCartney can do with his voice listen to the White Album lbum version of Helter Skelter, the album version of Hey Jude and Oh Darling from their Abbey Road album. Then you will have a better idea of what Paul McCartney can do with his voice. Another song to react to is the LIVE version of Maybe I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney during his Wings years. An incredible vocal performance.

I believe, actually I read somewhere, that John permanently altered his vocals by singing this song. By the way, there wasn't really anything that Paul's vocal arsenal lacked. He could make just about any sound he wanted with his voice. Have you ever heard Oh Darling, Helter Skelter, She's Leaving Home, I've Got A Feeling...? Many other examples out there. They were so good that a little thing like one of the members having a magical singing voice got overlooked at times.

If you can find it here on KZbin, please react to The Beatles’ 1963 TV performance on the Swedish TV music program, “Drop In”. They performed four songs during their set, and clapped along to the theme song at the end of the program. It would be the final time The Beatles would be performing before an audience close enough to shake their hands. The performance is almost 13 minutes long. The TV performance would be ideal for your Patreon channel.
