Town Business! Oakland California in the house, The Coup (coo) was lead by Boots Riley, if you’ve seen the movie SORRY TO BOTHER YOU, It was written and directed by him. He is one of the coldest socio-political rappers to ever bless the mic and the music is usually original live instruments as well, I think the sample in this is mostly the scratch hooks in the chorus. Great selection/reaction!

I’ve been bumping The Coup since 1994. One of my favorite rap songs and groups of all time. R.I.P to their DJ Pam. Also the lady serving the Burger in the video is E-40’s sister.

Fresh, dressed like a million bucks = La Di Da Di by Doug E. Fresh & MC Ricky D (aka Slick Rick). They were from Oakland and their catalog is definitely worth checking out. The DJ in the group was Pam the Funkstress. She would end up being the last tour DJ for Prince before he died, and Pam herself sadly passed away in 2017. The Coup were always politically charged and thought provoking. They got into some hot water in 2001 because they had an album due out in September with a cover showing Boots Riley and Pam in front of the World Trade Center exploding. The pictures were taken in June, but 9/11 happened and that cover obviously didn’t go over well. They ended up changing the cover art for the album that hit shelves.

Great reaction JJ! This was a nice 1994 underground hip hop hit by them. It's actually an interpolation (a sample replayed with live instruments) of the beat and groove from The Rub by George & Gwen McRae which I requested and you reacted to a few weeks ago. I loved the creativity of the video!

The Coup - Aggressive political intellectual hip-hop spittin truth like KRS-ONE or some shit. Priceless! 'I got game like I read the directions.' damn son! I dig it. such a short vid that perfectly conveys it's message. Our protagonist establishes himself as a confident & clever schemer, a street hustler who can clearly see there's more to life while makin his snaps gettin through the day, workin the bigger picture but then when he overheads the rich old corrupt politicians & CEOs he needs a minute to reflect and and 'wrestle with my mind like a sumo.' He quickly processes what he just witnessed & realizes these motherfuckers are playin tha game miles higher in the sky than he could ever imagine until that moment. Couple things. It shows he is on an upward arc and nowhere near realizing his potential. Many small-time hustlers wouldn't have the capacity or vision or ultimately humility to admit how small-time they were in contrast to the Bigga FIsh. It all happens & ends so fast the inference is there HAS to be a sequel of some sort for him to put into practice what he just learned. I gotta know the next stage of his evolution. Compelling Art & Artistry. Thanks for pointing out the Slick RIck & Doug E. Fresh reference. I'm slippin & didn't catch that one... Keep up the excellent reactions. You should react to The Brother's Johnson - The Devil. or any other Brother's Johnson song but that's my favorite for a multitude of reasons. Later!

Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but just so you youngens know half of this song is missing in this video, the pickpocket scene is longer, verses are cut out, the burger scene is missing the car / garage/ security guard and the cousin giving up the tuxedo verses, and the end is missing "fuck no I ain't got no grey poupon".

I’m from the Bay Area and have been jiving with The Coup for 30 years. They fuckin’ rock! Their politics (Boots is a communist, like me) are clear in their music, plus I love the funk they bring to it. Among other suggestions made, check out Dig It, Get Up(ft Dead Prez), and Not Yet Free (do album version not music video because it is much more militant). Thank you so much for reacting to them. I hope theirs music reaches more youth!
