The song can be seen as an autobiographical account of Morrison's life: he considered himself a "Rider on the storm." The "killer on the road" is a reference to a screenplay he wrote called The Hitchhiker (An American Pastoral), where Morrison was going to play the part of a hitchhiker who goes on a murder spree. The lyrics, "Girl you gotta love your man" can be seen as a desperate plea to his long time girlfriend Pamela. Source: Songfacts

"Riders on the Storm" defined vibe decades before vibe was even a thing. "There's a killer on the road \ His brain is squirmin' like a toad" -- 'nuff said. Remember the hypno-toad on Futurama? The lyric "Into this world we're thrown" supposedly invokes Heidegger's concept of thrownness -- a state of being in the present "with all its attendant frustrations, sufferings, and demands that one does not choose, such as social conventions or ties of kinship and duty." This was the last song Jim Morrison recorded with the band before he died. The video is something new.

@@OroborusFMA The first English translation of Being and Time was published in 1962, so I would not be surprised; However, I suspect Morrison likely picked up on the concept of "thrownness" as a comparative literature student at UCLA rather than directly from reading Heidegger.

I love this song cuz it's just so relaxing. Ray manzarek on keys is a genius but they were all really good. And the rain and thunder sound effects chest makes it perfect. His voice is so good for this as well. And I have always interpreted that bit about love your man as being about the cycle of life. Because he immediately follows it with something about how everything depends on the woman and for that reason life will never end. None of us would be alive if a woman didn't give birth to us.

It made to number 14 in the charts. This song was on the L.A. Woman album. Robby Krieger and John Densmore are the only members still alive. Keyboard is the correct reference! A keyboard plays a library of synthesized sounds including accurate samplings of musical instruments such as piano, drums, strings, woodwinds, and brass..!! Old school keyboards were much larger and very heavy containing tube circuits like old tube televisions. There were external custom synthesizer/filter modules that were used to create that unique sound that each band was known for! Experience truly unique synths by listening to Boston Third Stage Album!

The reference to "actor out on loan" is to the old Hollywood system where actors signed contracts with a particular studio which could last a really long time. Then they had no control over what parts they got or what movies they were put into. And the studio could loan them out to another studio to play a part in a movie without their consent. In other words you get put into a situation which you have no control over at all.

Jim Morrison was one of the many to call Laurel Canyon just outside of Hollywood his home. There is a book about Laurel Canyon and the connections of the musicians that came from there during the 60s. It can be downloaded for free as a pdf. It explains a lot about the time period. One thing worth mentioning is Jim's dad, the Admiral that was in charge of the naval ship used as a false flag in the Gulf of Tomkin to start the Vietnam war. I always envision the store Don McLean referred to in American Pie as the country store across the street from Jim's Laurel Canyon apartment. What I am trying to say is, the book on Laurel Canyon is a rabbit hole worth going down because so many musicians were gathered in that small area at that specific time in history.

I was mesmerized by this song when I was a kid. Nothing like hearing it on a rainy night. A total vibe in itself. At 63 I still get the same feeling when hearing it.

Where did that video come from? I'm impressed you weren't too distracted by it. I was distracted by it and I heard this song 100 times.

This song is epic one of the greatest songs ever written and performed by arguably the greatest band ever The Doors rest in peace Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek 🚪

Ray Manzarek is the genius on the keyboards. Jim Morrison was a poet who became a rock star. The Doors and Morrison actually became more famous after Jim's death in 1971 and the book, No One Here Gets Out Alive in 1981 😎

The thing about Jim Morrison is that not only is his voice one of rock's most recognized but his career was only about 4 or 5 years long. He was simply too out of this world and unpredictable. It drove the Doors up the wall. They could have lasted for decades. Great songs have kept their legacy alive. Jim's final work here is off the LA Woman album.

Last song The Doors ever recorded before Morrison's untimely death a few months later.

I'm familiar with the hitchhiker reference, but to me Morrison like all great artists left it open to the interpretation of life being the storm and we have got to ride it, all the time facing death, in its many forms. it still hold up today, be it, the killer on the road, (our government) give this man a ride and sweet memory will die, like let the bankers into your life and its all over. Everything about this song from the vocals to the arrangement is a classic, you can just enjoy flowing with the music, thinking of nothing or pin it to the eternal struggle.

I had the pleasure of hearing this done live. The keyboard is Ray Manzarek, an artist in his own right. Jim Morrison the lead was taken by heroin and is buried in Paris.

Lol my state,Florida JUST pardoned Jim Morrison for simulating a sexual act on stage in 1967 or 68. Took them 50 years! No one today would bat an eyelash. My mom was at this show, tho says she didn't see it
