George Morrison died at 89 in 2008, dude was a highly decorated Rear Admiral Naval Aviator who served in WW2, Korea, was a nuclear weapons instructor, and was commander of Naval Operations during The Gulf Of Tonkin incident. There are sites who say he started the Vietnam War, which isn't true but he was there when it officially started. It's easy to see why a young, sweet, artistic, boy like Jim Couldn't get far enough a way from that life.

Um, the Beatles?
@danielschaeffer12943 жыл бұрын
@@DJ-bj8ku I’ve given some thought to your post, and I tend to agree with Frank Zappa on this. “The Beatles were alright, but I always thought the Stones were a lot more interesting. They were a lot closer to the roots.” They were brilliant tunesmiths, but they had no formal training and worked their way along pretty much by accident. For a zillion reasons, I find their stuff a bit dated by now. Besides, I was always more of a blues cat than a rocker, so I guess it’s all a matter of taste.
@DJ-bj8ku3 жыл бұрын
@@danielschaeffer1294 What I loved about the Beatles is that no album sounds alike and each grew in sophistication, unlike most bands and soloists who have a formula and stick to it. And the sounds they produced were sublime. Even with Yellow Submarine, a simple pop sound, you feel like you’re actually in one. I’ve been around a long time and I like the Doors. Check out the interview with Jim’s father. Very illuminating about the generational divide.

@@danielschaeffer1294 ..... The Beatles, defined the way on everything and still are the trendsetters to this day, nothing is dated with them, you will find with every musician who has been successful that they were inspired and patterned their work after what the Beatles have done. The Beatles studied rhythm and blues heavily and was the foundation for most of their music at least in the beginning and their objective was to never have an album or song that sounded like the previous one. I'm someone who absolutely loves the Doors and definitely one of my all time favorites, But even the Doors credit The Beatles for many of their achievements. The sounds so common from the Doors and other groups from the sixties were unknown prior to The Beatles.
@deborahclappe1082 жыл бұрын
Music prior to the Beatles was mature, rich, and full. It was not just music, it was lives lived and experiences that drove it to the depth that was the music of this Era. The Beatles brought fluff music...I always felt like music took a step backward. Bands like The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Eagles, Queen...they laid the foundation for all other music...and they did it without synthesizers or digital manipulation. I don't listen to much mainstream music these days. There are a few contemporary artists that I go to on You Tube, but not many consistently have a lot of substance.

The Doors were if not the most, certainly were one of the most important bands ever to be recognized. Morrison was no joke. His words penetrated the deepest parts of emotion, thought and imagination. Ray Manzereck obviously a musical genius with Robby Kreiger and John Densmore both perfect fits for the Doors musical style. FYI, they did use many of the top studio bass players around and tried to find somebody who would be a good fit to add to the band but finally Ray got frustrated and said screw it I'll do the bass parts. He added a small bass keyboard to the left side of his Fender Rhodes piano and that was that. IMO Morrisons antics may have a lot to do with the problem of attracting strictly professional musicians.

I don't usually listen to the radio much anymore. Back in 2016, I was driving home late one night (approx 2:30-3 am) on the highway, which was pretty much deserted, and about 30 minutes outside of town, a thunderstorm started up. It was the most surreal experience I've ever had...still can't explain it. The small hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. Except this song has an actual bass player on it. Although it's very deceptive because it sounds like a part a keyboard player would come up with. It's not a part a real bassist would play. But there are places where you can tell its a real bass because he's sliding up and down the fretboard. Plus all the documentation that names Elvis' bass player as the bassist on this song. I thought it was Ray for a whole lot of years and was very surprised to find out otherwise.

What I see is this bar in the middle of nowhere in the desert in Nevada somewhere, and it is pouring down in one of those unusual thunderstorms... And you see these people coming out of the bar, and Jim is describing who they are, one by one. They are all Riders of the Storm, living life in the moment. First is the crazy killer (brain squirming like a toad, I LOVE that analogy) coming out with his unknowing victims. Next are the lovers... The heavy rain is obstructing the view so all you really see are the silhouettes of these people. Everyone of the people are taking their cars to ride away from the bar, each with different destinies.

Here's the story behind the song. at least a portion of his brooding lyric being inspired by the actions of Billy Cook, the notorious US spree-killer who murdered six people, including a young family, while hitchhiking from Missouri to California in the early 50s. Cook’s backstory had previously influenced HWY: An American Pastoral, the short experimental road movie Morrison made with filmmakers Paul Ferrara, Frank Lisciandro and Babe Hill in 1969. In the movie, Morrison played the hitchhiker who kills a man who stops to give him a ride - an event referenced directly in Riders On The Storm’s line “There’s a killer on the road”. Musically, the song then fell into place when The Doors began jamming on Stan Jones’ country standard (Ghost) Riders In The Sky: A Cowboy Legend during rehearsals. “We were playing (Ghost) Riders In The Sky and Jim was fooling around and came up with ‘Ghost Riders On The Storm’,” guitarist Robby Krieger recalled in 2013.

The bass sound comes from Ray Manzarek playing both the Fender Rhodes Bass Keyboard , and the Vox Continental Keyboard at the same time. He was one of the first keyboard players that stacked his keyboards. Ray has several videos where he describes how the Doors would come up with songs. Ray said this song was lifted from the song Riders In The Sky - Vaughn Monroe, when Robby was playing the song on his guitar in the studio, just messing around. Jim then said, "I have lyrics for that," and Densmore said, "We have to add some jazz to this song." By the way, all of them were Jazz players, and took their music roots from Jazz.
