The Drifters were one of the early 50's doo-wop R&B groups. They had a lot of great songs such as "Save The Last Dance For Me", "Under The Boardwalk", "There Goes My Baby", "This Magic Moment", "Some Kind Of Wonderful", "Please Stay", "Up On The Roof" etc. Ben E. King was in the group at one time but left for a solo career in the 60's. He had a big hit with "Stand By Me" & "Spanish Harlem".

I so love seeing "young 'uns" reacting to songs I grew up with.

Sarah, they are singing about the street in New York where all the major theatres are. 😊

Try some earlier stuff like " Under the Boardwalk" and even some of their stuff with Ben E King.😁👍👍

They mean Broadway in Manhattan. This song sounds sad and lonely, it is the night side of New York, where people looking for a break find only empty windswept streets and failure is only one step away. The singing is soulful and out of sight.

Back in the day, we would get home from school and turn on American Bandstand. It was a teen dance show and they would have an artist on to sing their new song.

The original hit, covered many times. as a white kid I loved all these black singing groups back i the day, and back in the day, as an 8 year-old, I had a radio nd had no clue nor cared what color anyone was....if a performance was good, it knew no skin color or prejudices...music has no skin color... today's million channels and musical separatism is a travesty on humanity. It was about melody and harmony and story telling, timeless music. I'm not saying things were perfect then, but the music was.
