“Unchained Melody” is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the little-known prison film Unchained (January 1955), hence the song title. In the movie one of the prisoners sings the song to the inmates in the area, he is about to be released from prison and and in the song he's hoping his wife will take him back. This song was for his wife.

This song is one of the most covered song in recording history... A LOT of people don't even realize that THIS version is a cover too... The song originally came out about 10 years earlier, in 1955, when it was released in the movie "Unchained"... That is why it is called "Unchained Melody"... It is the original working title... The original artist (From the movie) was Todd Duncan...

The studio version of this song was THE romance song of the 60s and 70s. The story is that, after the recording session when this was recorded, Bobby told Bill, his partner and producer, that he wanted to try it one more time. "I think I can do it better." "No, you can't," was Bill's reply. I think this performance proved Bobby right. Absolutely amazing! As others have mentioned, "Soul and Inspiration" is another classic romance song by this duo that should not be missed. And their recording of "You've Lost that Loving Felling" was the most radio played song of the entire 20th century. Bobby's solo performance of "Summertime" is a must!
