December 14, 1984, was the day I went to my 1st concert ever when I was 14 years old. It was The Kinks with Tommy Shaw of Styx opening at the Philadelphia Spectrum. I got tickets for a Christmas gift from my mom. I always play The Kinks at this time of the year. RIP Mom, Lori, Michele, and the Spectrum. Happy Holidays to all!🎄🎅🏼

The Kinks were my first solo concert ever, too. October 26th, 1980, at the Nassau Coliseum. (They played the Spectrum the next night.) I was 17 and technically my first show was when, on a summer visit to look at colleges, Dad took me to Tanglewood, thinking there would be a classical show going on, and instead we ran into a Bonnie Raitt show with a bunch of kids sitting on blankets and smoking pot, but Dad (RIP) stayed mellow. (Of course, that could have been from all the pot in the air.) But the Kinks were the first show I decided to check out on my own.

You need to hear the studio version of this song, with Rays brother Dave singing his heart out, and of course playing that amazing riff.
@Jessica_Roth8 ай бұрын
Only the Kinks could take a rejected song and turn into TWO classic songs, 28 years apart. Ray Davies originally wrote this one for The Animals to record (can you Imagine Eric Burdon singing this, with that big "It's My Life" voice of his?), but they rejected it. So Ray gave it to Dave to sing (usually the brothers just sang their own songs, with Ray writing 90% of them) and made it the B-side of "Sunny Afternoon" (which was a #1, recall) and it featured a lovely Spanish guitar. You can check out that original 1966 version, it's very good. HOWEVER, through the years, Ray also sang it (it's his song, after all) and in 1994, for the live album "To the Bone", he decided to record his version, and changed the lyrics a bit, and had fun with the singalong bit (since the idea of people singing "I'm not like everybody else" in unison is ironic. Perhaps you remember the bit in "Life of Brian" where Brian tells the crowd of worshippers not to repeat everything he says and they say, in unison, "Yes! We are all individuals!"). And to compensate for taking the vocal away from Dave, he let Dave go all-out on the guitar, since the song no longer had to fit on the short length of a 1960s single. And then you made me spend a good half-hour trying to come up with suggestions, since there are SO many possibilities. (Not that I'm complaining, honestly.) For early hard-hitting rockers, try "Til the End of the Day" or "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?" For observation of British life, try "Shangri-La", which some people call the best Kinks song ever. (Jon Mendelsohn, the music critic who championed the Kinks and said "Waterloo Sunset" was The Greatest Song Ever Written in the English Language, thought this was #2.) For that whimsical "Lola"/"Apeman"/"Supersonic Rocket Ship" era that you love, try "Gotta Be Free" or "God's Children" or the heart-tugging "Celluloid Heroes", which you will find MANY recommendations for in these comments. For their rocking return era, try "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman". I suggest the performance from the "One For The Road" Concert DVD. And finally, there is "Destroyer", the love-child of "All Day and All of the Night" and "Lola" that I have mentioned more than once. (and yes, this leaves out the 1980s stuff, but that's enough for now, lol.) *KEEP ON KINKIN' !!*

I like the shadenfreude of you wearing the New Orleans T-shirt because Ray Davies used to live in New Orleans, and that is where Ray chased after a thief who had stolen his then girlfriend's purse and got shot in the leg. I mean he is not like everybody else. Even in his late age, he was fearless like that. I am also so glad you chose the live To the Bone version which was used in the Sopranos. It is the best interpretation of this song! It is one of my all time favorite songs! Absolutely smashing. And your right about the guitar work as well, Dave Davies, Ray's brother, is one of the great rock guitarists! The Kinks were huge when they came out with You Really Got Me and got a chance to tour America. Unfortunately, their tour manager left them, I believe to manage Sonny and Cher, leaving Ray (18) and Dave (16) to fend for themselves in a foreign country. Can you imagine trying to manage things themselves at that age in a country they had never been in? I mean as the song suggests, they were fiercely independent, but it is a tall task. We don't know what exactly happened. We don't know if it had to do with teamsters taking their band name the Kinks the wrong way. Whether there was a fight or not? But, we do know the result was the teamsters refused to work for the Kinks and it effectively resulted in them being unable to tour the US at the height of their career, with all the financial implications of such a situation. The US was where the money was at. But, it created a very special creativity and it created a cult following of fans who just love the band. Play more Kinks! There are plenty of people out there that would love to hear young people get a chance to enjoy them! If you want an amusing 60s song, you should try Dedicated Follower of Fashion.

This is a live version recorded at Konk Studios in front of a small audience on the 1996 re-issue of "To the Bone". Unfortunately the link you chose edited out Ray's typical witty intro to the song. The original studio version was the B-side to their "Sunny Afternoon" single. What makes the original quite unique is that Dave Davies sang lead - typically Dave sang lead on songs that he wrote.

This is a rerecorded version of the Sixties original from the early Nineties -- on To The Bone, what turned out to be the band's last album. It's a career retrospective of studio and live recordings spanning the the previous three decades. Really wish you would've done the original album version from the 1960s versus this much later live version. The album version conveys the feeling of the song better with clearer to comprehend lyrics. However, the best use of this song was at the end of one of the Sopranos episode. An episode where everyone seemingly is happy and has their sh*t together...except Tony who still feels miserable. So he does stuff to make others angry...and finally he is happy. And then this song plays.

Very nice guitar work on this by Dave Davies. Another track to hear/see is "Jukebox Music". There is a video of this live from 1977 on the Old Grey Whistle Test show in the U.K. (WhiteRose63). Share the intro by Ray. Showcases not only Dave's great guitar work, but Ray and Dave's harmonizing are spot on. The Kinks are in top form on this.

Can't go too far wrong with The Kinks! Try "Superman" next time! This is a great tune. Yeah! Dave Davies on guitar? Forgot. Hot stuff! Thanks.

If you haven't done their 2 of their biggest hits- You Really Got Me and All Day & All of the Night, you should.

Ray en Dave Davies have great voices. I never get tired of listening to The Kinks. Can you revisit the band Cheap Trick? Their song "I Want You to Want Me" was originally released in 1977, but only their live version at Budokan in Tokyo became popular. For me, the ultimate version is the one in which you can also hear the audience. The KZbin video (audio only) is called I Want You to Want Me (Live at Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, JPN - April 1978). Thanks!

This sounds like a later version, not their original version from the mid 60s; the 60s garage band The Chocolate Watchband did a really great version of it

Correct & respectable live version from the 1996' US double CD release of 'To The Bone'. Maybe you should try with the original 1966 studio take. Pure Garage/ProtoPunk seminal anthem. 💣🔥
