Back in the day, the Kinks had a nickname, "Thinking Man's Rock and Roll. Their music went all over the place. Another more hard core tune is Destroyer. One of my favorite Kinks songs is Celluloid Heroes. A good music video song was Come Dancing. The Clash, by the way, were a late '70s - '80s band. The British Invasion was in the mid to late '60s.

My favorite Kinks album is Low Budget. Close 2nd though is Everybody's in Showbiz because in part how diverse the songs were. Celluloid Heroes is one of the many good songs on that album. This was released in 1981. That's ~17 years after the first song you heard by The Kinks. They continued writing and recording throughout that time, with a lot of infighting between band members, record company personnel, and others. Try listening to "All Day and All of the Night", "Lola", "Tired of Waiting for You", " Sunny Afternoon", "Well Respected Man", " Dedicated Follower of Fashion", "Waterloo Sunset", " Come Dancing" and their nod to disco "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman".

To be fair, almost everyone had a 'nod to disco' around that time (think Miss You by the Rolling Stones). It was Hawaiian music in the late '50s, the Twist albums in the early '60s and disco in the late '70s. But it wasn't like Rod Stewart-y disco. And there was always the Misfits and Sleepwalker albums to still fall back on. Love me some Kinks to his very day. Went to see them in Binghamton NY the day before my 23rd birthday. After all the songs you mentioned, plus Celluloid Heroes, Low Budget and a few others I'd completely forgotten, I came out of there a year older.

The Kinks (1964-1995) have about 400 great songs. You've heard two up-beat songs by them. Their lead vocalist and song-writer is Ray Davies. He may be one of the greatest songwriters ever. Right up there with Lennon-McCartney. Most of his songs deal with the British class system, British society, etc...If you want to dive deeper, here are ten Kinks songs which will show their amazing diversity. 1. Shangri-la 2. A Well Respected Man 3. Waterloo Sunset 4. Come Dancing 5. Victoria 6. Polly 7. I'm Not Like Everybody Else 8. Till The End of the Day 9. Picture Book 10. She's Got Everything and then, 390 more!!! "You Really Got Me" came out in 1964, and was The Kinks' breakout hit that established them as part of the British invasion. "Better Things" is a later song of theirs; it was released in 1981. You can hear that "wide open" sound charteristic of the New Wave music of the early eighties. Unlike many older bands, The Kinks transitioned to new wave very well; the sound was natural for them. The New Wave movement was also called "the second British invasion" because so many British bands were at the forefront.

The British Invasion happened in the Sixties beginning in February 1964 when the Beatles played Ed Sullivan. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Who, The Kinks, those were my favorites. Others will remember other groups. The KInks were definitely a part of that. So, they are from London, the section called Muswell Hill. They, also, have brothers in the band, Ray Davies, songwriter, lead vocals, and rhythm guitar and Dave Davies, lead guitar. Ray Davies was one of, if not the first, writers of thematic, concept albums. While many of their songs can be listened to and appreciated as singles, often, a more full appreciation comes from seeing how they fit into the story told by the album. Pete Townshend of The Who has said that Ray Davies should be acclaimed the Poet Laureate of England and the first to write a rock opera (the credit for which is usually ascribed to Townshend). I suppose he has in mind The Kinks' album Arthur (Or The Decline and Fall of The British Empire). Or, maybe, The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society. This is high praise from the man who penned Tommy. The Kinks do varied styles and moods. Some songs on the heavy side: "Pressure", "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman" ,"Give The People What They Want", "Destroyer", "Back to Front", "State of Confusion" and "Young Conservatives". On the lighter side are "Come Dancing", "Art Lover" "Don't Forget To Dance", "Heart of Gold" "Celluloid Heroes"

Yes the British invasion was huge, encompassing the early Beatles, The Stones and a lot of other groups. It was partly because of what was going on in London at the time, cultural and social changes which made London in particular "flavour of the month." And although the British Invasion specifies a particular time period, that doesn't take into account the huge groups like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Def Leppard, Black Sabbath, The Who, The Rolling Stones, some of whom were in the earlier "invasion" but continued to rock on over the decades and some of whom who started slightly later. So , despite the specified time period of the "invasion," in reality British music kept flooding into the US (and Australia) for decades.

20th Century Man is one of my very favorite Kinks songs.

There are so many versions of the Kinks sound...from the harder-edge, dirty boy British Invasion of the mid-1960s...to the late 1960s/early 1970s British folk and progressive side to the late 1970s/early 1980s American arena rock version. And honestly, I love elements of all 3 incarnations of the band's sound.

Oooh, interesting choice. This differs from "You Really Got Me", because it is OVER FIFTEEN YEARS later, and there had been a *lot* of twists and turns in the story of the Kinks before then. (And there would be one more BIG twist, with the next album, "State of Confusion".) The big song from this album, "Destroyer", is definitely a keeper, too. However, for that one, you should first listen to "All Day and All of the Night", the long-ago follow-up to "You Really Got Me", because "Destroyer" builds off of that one. (You know, if y'all had done "Father Christmas", which I spent December SCREAMING for you to do, this wouldn't be only your second Kinks song. Just sayin'…)

This is the 1st album I ever bought. It came out in 81 I was 12 years old. I've still got it, but now I've got over 200 Albums, most of them I listen to regularly. I'm old school like that. I love the sound of vinyl. Conversely I have a relatively modern turn table, but my speakers and receiver are older than that 1st album

Brit invasion, first thing I think of is the Beatles, one I'm sure you don't react to as much because of Blocking issues. The best song I have ever heard to discuss the differences and analysis of Positivity vs Negativity is by Living Colour, the song This Is The Life. It is absolutely awesome and thought provoking, and certainly not as upbeat, but so profound in the ways it makes you think about life and how you really should appreciate life for what it is.

The Kinks rocked. Here are a couple more. Jerry and the Pacemakers.... How do you do it or Ferry Across the Mersey; Hermits Hermits...There's a Kind of Hush; Manfred Mann... Do Wah Diddy, Fox on the run... :) All great groups. I had all these on cassette tape and played them over and over until the tape snapped. :D

The British invasion describes a period just after America invented rock 'n' roll, where British kids assembled bands and primarily - performed new arrangements based on old blues standards. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, The Animals and The Kinks were early examples.

Ray Davies developed as a writer, beginning in the mid-60s when the Kinks were unable to get US visas for several years. Better Things was released in 1981 and became a minor hit in Britain. The Kinks are pretty much the only major British Invasion band that did not go psychedelics in the late 60s. Other suggestions, most from the 60s and early 70s, are Waterloo Sunset, Lola, I(I'm an) Aoeman, Set Me Free, Days, Victoria, Village Green Preservations Society, and Celluloid Heroes,

On this tour back .in the 80's, Ray Davies, the lead singer, got Chrissy Hyde from the Pretenders preg. It was a great show as I recall. Everyone has given good suggestions. Thanks for this one.

The first Kinks song you guys reacted to was from 1964. This one is from the late 70s. The British Invasion took place during the mid-60s so if you want something more along the lines of "You Really Got Me" I would suggest the song "All Day and All of the Night". The song Destroyer from this album is also a more harder rocking song or even "Attitude", "Low Budget", or the rock disco song (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman from their Low Budget album. The Kinks have a TON of great songs and albums...... "Lola", "Sunny Afternoon", "Waterloo Sunset", "A Well Respected Man", "Victoria", "Picture Book", "Apeman", "Tired of Waiting for You", "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" and the list goes on and on.

I like the Kinks and have heard many of their songs but I hadn't heard this one before. It's nice, but then The Kinks don't really ever disappoint.
