According to information I found on line is that The solo was done on alto flute, by the famous jazz flutist Bud Shank. Some people thought it might have been a piccolo. When someone says the Mamas & The Papas, This song always comes to mind. Enjoy your videos.

Song was written when they were in NYC recording, it was winter and they missed Calf. Got down on my knees and pretend to pray 🙏, preacher liked it cold knowing people would come in to get warm.

The Mamas and the Papas have their roots in folk music, which crossed over to Pop. Technically there were no backup singers, as the group of four shared harmonies. Almost all music recorded in the 1960s for air play on radio stations were limited to 2:30-3:00 minutes to make time for commercials. Of course there will be exceptions in live recordings or recordings that were not made for commercial radio play.

70s vibes are cool, but this was a groovy 60s tune, 1964. You'll love their musical soul twins, a group called the Fifth Dimension. They were 5 singers that procured the hippy soul sounds of California from 67-78. Their biggest hit was Age of Aquarius/ Let the Sun Shine, i call it psychedelic soul music.

It's an alto flute which is slightly larger than the typical flute you see in high school bands and such. It has a lower range and more mellow tone. Because it's longer the neck is bent into a U shape so the keys at the far end can be more easily reached.

The Mamas and Papas had a few hit songs. There were a ton of great songs in the 1960’s and ‘70’s. Here a just a couple of songs and artists that you may consider. Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel. Everybody’s Talkin’ by Harry Nielsen. Happy Together by The Turtles. And of course any song by The Beatles. ✌️🖖

Thanks, Ace! an amazing and ground-breaking song... John Philips was a musical genius in creating those unique harmonies (although as it turns out not a great person.. but that's another story)...Cass Elliot was astonishing, as well... great reaction..

Hi ACE, the song is from 1965. It was TMATP first major hit. The instrumentation is from The Wrecking Crew with John Philips on guitar too. You found via KZbin, a gem. Another song from them to try is Monday Monday. I think you will like. I’m going to do a sideways recommendation. I know you previously reacted to Carpenters. Well in 1967 Karen and Richard teamed up with Joe Osborn (The Wrecking Crew bassist) to make demos to try and get a recording contract. One of the songs the recorded was California Dreamin’. Karen is 17 and hasn’t fully figured out her voice but OMG she still did a bang up job. It’s a different take on the song but still beautiful. The song was never released during her lifetime. Richard included it in a compilation or rare tracks in the early 2000’s. So it is available. If you want to do a comparison reaction, I think this is a worthy track. It is Pre-Carpenters, and kind of historic. Richard is on electric piano, Joe is on bass and I’m not sure who is drumming, it’s not Karen. I think you will enjoy this. Also notice the subtle lyric change, a bit more religious. No video just a picture slide show. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqnTfp6Doqyeiqcsi=hscF7M2tm-3sEw77

This is my favorite Mamas& Papas song and they had quite a few other winners. There is no doubt in my mine that the 60's and 70's had the best variety of creative and well written music. The 80's and 90's wasn't too bad either.

Mommas and the Poppas, The Lovin Spoonful were originally Greenwich Village (New York City) folk singers that formed groups…immensely popular in the ‘60s

Recorded in late '65 and released in early '66. All singles were short because top 40 radio wanted to brag they played more music per hour than their competition so they loved short songs.

This came out the year I was born in 1966. Very great song with one of the best flute solos. They hit number one with their song called Monday, Monday that came out in 1966 as well.

There is an early Janis Joplin video doing fall and chained with her early band Big Brother and the holding company and its it I think the Monterey Pop jazz festival or something at any rate it was an outdoor deal and everybody played for free trying to get noticed except for one band that got paid and I don't remember now but I bet people know in the comments. At any rate, this is a video on KZbin and I've noticed it being reacted to a lot. But at some point midway through the performance, it cuts to Mama Cass from this group; she was the one in the black dress with the really belty vocals, and the camera lingers on her several times because she just seems to be blown away by this Janis Joplin performance. And then at the very end you can actually see her mouthing Wow! It's such a great moment.
