Jamaican music - reggae and ska - were strongly represented and embraced by English youth, owing in large part to well entrenched Caribbean ex-pat populations, as well as others worldwide through the mid-late 70s and after. Bob Marley and others spread the unfiltered OG goods everywhere. The Police's fusion of punk minimalism, energy and reggae rhythms was seen as an innovative breath of fresh air, and their propensity for crafting catchy, memorable songs catapulted them to status as one of the top bands in the world for as long as they chose to continue. More progressive, jazzy and mainstream elements found their way into the mix and received little pushback from adoring fans. I would suggest 'Walking on the Moon', 'Every Little Thing She Does...', 'Synchronicity II' and 'King of Pain' to follow up.

First even album, well tape, I brought was Bob Marley - Babylon by Bus in the early 80's. Everyone I knew was into reggae and we were all as white as they come, even had a green, yellow and red arm band. Massive fan of Bob Marley, Gregory Isaacs (night nurse is still one of my favorites), Steel Pulse, and UB40 of course

The funniest thing about this song is that it was written as a filler-track. When they were recording this album, they were pretty much done but the record wasn't long enough so they threw this little song together in literally 20 minutes just to satisfy the terms of the recording deal and it ended up being one of their biggest hits. "Paranoid" from Black Sabbath was also created very quickly in the studio for the same reasons and is one of Black Sabbath's most popular songs.

there are actually more songs then you would think that are good that have this story. cant remember which song but theres a maroon 5 song from their first album thats the same a company made them record one more and its a good ass song. (not a super fan of later maroon 5 but that first album i love alot)

It's funny with artistic personalities, often it seems when it gets to the point when the pressure is really on and they're under the gun they pop out a classic piece of work, then other times when they're just screwing around, playing, the magic happens. There's no predicting when/where it will happen.

Awesome choice you guys - like others have said, the Police leaned heavily on the sounds of reggae and ska, especially on their earlier albums. Sting plays a mean bass, and Stewart Copeland is a total badass on the drums, one of my all-time favourite drummers - extremely precise in his playing, with no wasted or unnecessary notes. He did a lot of composing after the band split up, including all the music for the original TV series 'The Equalizer' in the 80s. Great reaction as always, peace and love from Canada!

At 1:17 in your video you'll hear a subtle piano key. Sting came in the room and accidentally hit one of the keys while he was sitting as he was waiting to start singing. You can hear a bandmate laugh, they decided just to keep it in.

The Police were an amazing band and heavily influenced by reggae, but you still haven't reacted to any real reggae though. If and when you do, it will definitely have to be the one and only Bob Marley to start with. Is This Love is one of his best: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXnInIGkrrh0nK8 but almost everything he did was good. Iron Lion Zion is a completely different vibe: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIXEqn-JZ9eKg9U Enjoying your reactions, as always.

The Police were originally formed as a UK punk rock band in the 70's... but they quickly evolved and by their first album in 1978, The Police were part of the 'new wave' ...they incorporated reggae and funk influences to create a very unique sound. Unfortunately, they were short-lived because of conflict between the 3 members... they were friends, but couldn't be in the same band 😂 Sting (vocals & bass) went on to become a successful solo artist.

The lead singer, Sting, used to be a teacher in the north of England. I understand he got the idea for this song from when he was teaching Drama Club. They were putting on a production, and a couple of the students were manning the lighting controls. One student couldn't help but experiment with mixing the colours, often to a detrimental effect. At one rehearsal, when she tuned an idyllic country scene into a blood-soaked nightmare, Sting could be heard to yell out, "Roxanne! You don't have to put on the red light!" From 'Little-Known Rock and Roll Facts Vol 3"
