I remember Sting commenting on that fact at one point. He was being interviewed on a morning show I think, and talked about how people would come up to him and tell him this was their wedding song and his response was always, "Um...good luck."
@hackapump
@hackapump Жыл бұрын
It’s more than "just" a stalker song though. Sting wrote it during a very painful divorce, from a very dark place. So while it is stalking on a literal level, it’s really about an all-consuming jealousy and an incapability of letting go of someone who’s already gone. So the fact that someone would play it at their wedding is even more ironic than it seems: A song about a painful divorce, and how shitty that feels, and how shitty thoughts you have over it. Played at your wedding. Great…

Puff Daddy did not ask to use the sample and Sting sued, so for decades now Sting gets 100 percent of the revenues from both versions. Sting said Puff did eventually ask permission, but after the fact. He also said he still continues to be paid $2000 a day after all these years by Puff for the use of the sample. Lesson of this story is.. don’t take without asking and paying, or it will cost you a lot more in the long run.

*Sting himself has said this song is written about a lost love, jealousy, and the obsession that takes over in the most negative way. He is so confused by how so many have thought this was some beautiful love song. He told a funny story where a couple told him this song was their 1st song to dance to at their wedding. Sting mustered up a half smile and just said "well, good luck."*

The Police became globally popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were part of the British new wave scene & they played a style of rock influenced by punk, reggae & jazz. They have had a lot of hits such as "Message In A Bottle", "Roxanne", "Can't Stand Losing You", "Walking On The Moon", "Don't Stand So Close to Me", "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" etc. Sting went on to have a big solo career.

This is towards the end of the group's glorious ride by which time they had developed a more sophisticated sound and production. Their early music from the late '70s was a unique blend of reggae, punk, and pop. (BTW, reggae and ska were big in the UK in that era.) They were exceptional from the start. Listen to their first hit "Roxanne" and move on from there. One of the greatest three-piece rock bands of all-time (along with Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience). The recording of this song is currently the most played song (via radio, TV, movies) in history, taking over the top stop from "You've Lost That Loving Feeling."

The Police - England 1977 🎤🎸Sting aka Gordon Sumner (he got his name bcoz he played the stand up bass in bar & always wore black & yellow - even his own family calls him Sting) 🎸Andy Summers 🥁Stewart Copeland (you'll see his name on just about every top 10 drummers list - he is an innovator) Yes, their music is a fusion of genres. They were together for 9 VERY tumultuous years. Sting & Stewart are like 2 bulls in a china shop running at each other. However, in those 9 short years they made some of the biggest songs of all time. Phil, "Every Breath You Take" DID win 2 Grammy's for Song of the Year & Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. In May 2019, EBYT was recognised by BMI as being the most played song in radio history 👏 A Grammy is priceless, but there are 3 other inductions for a SONG that mean the most to me: "Grammy Hall Of Fame" "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll" "Library of Congress National Recording Registry" (Every Breath You Take is on the 2nd one) Sting's solo career is iconic as you know. Next Sting song "Desert Rose" Next Police Song: Roxanne Wrapped Around Your Finger Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic Message In A Bottle Dont Stand So Close To Me Spirit In The Material World Synchronicity II (IMO their most complex song - very intelligent lyrics - have them ready) I'll let everyone else fill ya in that this is the ultimate stalker song & P. Diddy 😂

Stewart Copeland the drummer is an American from Alexandria, Virginia. I'm an old guy (67) and I hate when I hear "sample." When I was young you simply were not allowed to take bits and pieces from other songs. Today it's just not anywhere near the same.

Exactly...they steal from others' hard work, and they act like it's their creation. In this digital information age, it is VERY EASY to let everyone know that you took it from someone else. But they don't. I"m so glad Luke Combs lets everyone know Fast Car is Tracy Chapman's song, and doesn't represent the song as his own creation. To his credit, he goes over the top to make sure everyone knows...heheh...but other artists don't have to go as far as him, but today's sampling singers should not act like their sampled songs are their own creation.

I saw The Police one time. It was 1979 at a little venue that probably held 300-400 people. They were touring for their first album. It was a great show. Since they didn't have a lot of original songs yet, they filled out the setlist with some Ska and Reggie. The ticket price? $5 Sting is one of those musicians who can do everything. I think he wrote every song The Police recorded, though other band members contributed of course.

Every Breath You Take was the number one most popular song of the 80s. Musically quite different from other Police songs. Stewart Copeland, the drummer was very angry at being asked to play simple, like a drum machine. His style is to fill up the space and be all over the place.

It's sort of amazing to me, seeing people say your version is different. This was the version of those who created it. I guess I'm a purist, I really don't understand sampling. That you don't understand the undercurrent of this song speaks volumes. People write songs as a whole piece, actually. They were a huge group, and Sting a very complex person, and writer. It'd be amusing to hear your take on a song like Synchronicity. Sorry, sometimes I despair...

@@danieljohnston1798 "Sampling" to me shows a lack of creativity and laziness on the part of the person doing the sampling. Many Rap and Hip Hop "artists" (cough) sample a great many of the the songs they record. It's different when someone re-records a song and makes it a tribute to the original artist (e.g. when Whitney Houston re-recorded the Dolly Parton song, "I will always Love you," utterly magisterial).
@isais207

@barsandbarbells2022

Have you heard "I'll Be Missing You"? If so, you'd know it really doesn't resemble much of the original other than the melody & interpolation. The original is about stalking someone as has been alluded to - the remixed version is a dedication to one of the most well-known rappers in history by his best friend and his wife discussing missing him after being killed at 25 years old. In your view, are covers by Elvis, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, and plenty of other major hit records plagiarising too? Given "I'll Be Missing You' spent eleven weeks atop the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one in 15 other countries while being one of the best selling singles of all time - It's pretty "amusing" you're unable to appreciate various artistry without being so condescending.

Both of you are wonderful and young. The so called "artists" who have to rely on samples to create their music is just testament that they are not musicians and can't write their own material. With that said, The Police were part of the punk movement, but it's members came from jazz and rock and roll. Sting was a bass player for a jazz band, Andy Summers was part of the 60's British invasions and Stuart Copeland was an American who found himself in England. All of them are virtuosos on their instruments. It just shows me how watered down top 40 radio is when I heard you guys refer to this as a "Diddy" song. Keep going guys. There is an entire world of music to explore. Kudos to both of you.

At that time they were at the peak of their career and certainly the most popular rock band in the world 🌎 at that time

Nice reaction guys! The Police made it very big globally, before Sting later moved on to his solo career. Ren Gill - who I think you have reacted to - was also a great fan of The Police, and Sting, and covered several Police songs during his busking days with The Big Push, and others. He uses lyrics from "Roxanne" in his crazy rap-EDM song "Losing It".

It can't be understated how huge this song was the year it was released. This is considered one of the best songs in rock history, and this album (Synchronicity) is also considered a classic.

The Police were one of the few great bands to come out of the late 70's into the 80s. It was a bit barren after the 70s. A unique sound when we were all looking for something new and different. Synchronicity II still my favorite track.

Every breath You Take wasn't just one of their biggest hits, it was by a million miles their biggest hit and best song, I very much doubt there's no person on earth who hasn't heard this song or liked it, I can't believe that anyone could hate this, it is one of the greatest songs of all time

The snare drum is using an effect called gated reverb. Which was real popular back then.

Stewart Copeland's snare sound is iconic although this particular sound is a bit more 'smashed' compared to previous sounds. Always super-tight and high-pitched and of course he's an absolute legend of a drummer.

Really glad you enjoyed The Police's Every Breath You Take (a stalker's lament). This group has an amazing back catalogue. Weren't really punk, more new wave, but bloody good all the way through.

Great reaction this is such a fun band. Great beat and great lyrics known for having an infusion of reggae- rock sounds. Sting is the lead singer he went on to have a long and successful music career too. Since you've reacted to one of Sting's songs before, I'll leave a suggestion for one of each in case you're interested. 1) "The Police - Roxanne (Official Music Video)" (by the channel: The Police) 2) "Sting - Fields Of Gold (Live From Lake House, Wiltshire, England, 1993)" Fun reaction thanks for sharing
