Originally, the line “I shouted out ‘Who killed the Kennedys?’” was going to be “I shouted out ‘Who killed John Kennedy?’“ During the time in 1968 when this song was being recorded, Kennedy’s brother Bobby Kennedy was also assassinated. Because of that, the line got changed.

Glad you took the time to slow down and realize that a full appreciation of the song really requires an understanding of the references. “When after all, it was you and me.” Killer line.

Love the Stones. During the Russian Revolution the Czar and his family were murdered, Anastasia was one of his daughters .She became distinguished because a woman came out saying she was Anastasia and had survived.

In Russia during a revolution they killed the Czar and his family, a daughter was named Anastasia. Soon after there was another revolution that created Soviet Union. About 100 yrs ago. The Czar's family ran the place for centuries before that. BTW Czar is short for Ceasar or King. Also spelled Tsar

One of my favorite Rolling Stones tunes. I always wondered why this group was considered the best "Rock & Roll" band of all time. Then a friend gave me 4 tickets to their "Bridges to Babylon" tour when they came to Boston (actually Foxborough). That show blew me away!!! My favorite entertainer live is actually Prince. But they are definitely in my top 5. Irony here is Prince opened for them and was booed off the stage.

As another commenter pointed out, Lucifer wants a little courtesy because we blame our choices on him. Therefore he feels he deserves sympathy.

Sympathy for the devil is warranted, from their perspective, when you factor in that people blame their own behavior and actions on the devil, i.e. passing the Buck off from themselves, thus not facing consequences.

The Blame Game. The Zorastrians of Iran was one of the first groups related to the religion of the Hebrews to conflate God's Wrath with the devil's assault, aka "the devil made me do it" Everything bad that happens to man is not always due to satan, most of it is God's wrath.

The Devil brings to life what humans want. In cases of terrible things, humans did the bad stuff, and the Devil just helped them. Now he wants recognition and sympathy because he's not being treated fairly. Poor Devil.

Sympathy For The Devil was intended to be an analysis of the dark side of humanity; one which allows itself to be too easily swallowed up by the banality of evil, thereby helping it to accomplish the wickedness it craves . If you understand the Devil within yourself, maybe you can deal with him.

The whole point is that the Devil didn't do all that shit, did, he just sat back and cheered us on - yeah, you got it finally. Be careful when you meet him (and you will) and show him some respect, and your soul might just survive.

This is the devil trying to too you that he didn't commit all of these atrocities, we did. He's saying that he just happened to be there for all of them and because of that we put the blame on him for them. So he wants some sympathy for getting blamed all of the time. But isn't that exactly what the Devil would say?

Anastasia supposedly lived and or survived the firing squad who killed them because they had stuffed valuable jewelry and gold and diamonds etc in their clothing. not long though I think they all died and were buried but the kids they say were buried alive di to living through the executions because of the valuables they shoved in their clothes.

I dont know if you looked up the historical references but i hope this helps: The Crucification of Jesus Christ (ca. 30), sentenced under Pontius Pilatus, the prefect of Judaea. The Russian Revolutions (1917), the execution of the Russian Imperial family including the only 17 year old Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanova by the Bolsheviks (1918). St. Petersburg, that had actually been renamed to "Petrograd" in 1914, was the capital of Imperial Russia. The "Blitzkrieg" of the German nationalsocialists in the Second World War (1939-1945) led to the fast advance of the Wehrmacht. The superior and, compared to the First World War (1914-1918) relatively agile tanks were one of the main reasons why a "Blitzkrieg" instead of static warfare was possible. The 100 Years' War (1337-1453) between the French Kings (house of Capet-Valois) and the English Kings (house of Plantagenet) who regarded themselves as the rightful Kings of France. The assassinations of US President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and his younger brother Senator Robert F. Kennedy in 1968.

Mick and the Boys stopped playing this song after 1971, because they said from the very start when they wrote and recorded this song, everyone in the Band started having a bad feeling about making Satan the topic of this song. Keith Richards (Lead guitar) said "we're no Bloody angles, but whenever we do this song or even rehearse it, the hair on the back of my neck stands up." The Beat, rhythm, and the evil chanting of "Hoo- hoo," of this song is intoxicating. I've seen it at parties when this song comes on, everyone sort of goes into a trance. Great tune, but it's an evil inspired song, and I want nothing to do with a song that glorifies Satan. I'm a thankful and grateful Christian, saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. Thanks Friend
