the thing I really love is the contrast between how upbeat and energetic the performance is and how incredibly DARK the lyrics are

Someone in another reaction thread put it very well, observing that it's intended to be ironic. On one hand it's a rocking piece of music that will in fact bring the house down at a party, and at the same time it paints a picture of a very possible reality in which the enjoyment of music is a quaint memory. It's a reality that some folks seem keen to bring about these days in the US. I hope this song doesn't turn out to be prophetic. "Heard about Detroit?"

Are they dark? I LOVE this song. Byrne said that the songs were about the emotional feeling, not the literal one.

The movement symbolized what we would all be doing during wartime: running like hell. Byrne wrote the words after reading about the French underground resistance fighters during WW2.

Yeah, it seems to be a 'domestic resistance' kind of situation, hiding out, living on peanut butter etc. The references to Houston, Detroit and Pittsburgh are particularly chilling...

The proper companion video to this one is "Genius of Love" from Tom Tom Club, which is taken from the same concert film, Stop Making Sense. Tom Tom Club is a group formed by many of the members of Talking Heads, but not David Byrne (although I do think he produced their album). It's been so heavily sampled it will blow your mind how much of it you've heard in other contexts.

So glad that your generation is grooving to this performance. If you haven't been to the theatre to see the remastered run of this epic concert video, you definitely should. I was working at a theatre in the 80s when this film opened. My boss was very cool, and did not mind that I was inside DANCING with everyone of the other patrons. NO ONE stayed in their seats! Talking Heads still get me up on my feet and dancing whenever I put this DVD in!

Hey. Amazing reaction. I would highly recommend watching the whole movie on your own time. It’s a concert called “Stop Making Sense” by Talking Heads. It changed my life. They start out with one person and add a band member each song. It’s very entertaining, especially chillin and smokin.

If u want a real treat, watch the concert film this is from, STOP MAKING SENSE!! Imho, in my top 3 of concert films. Talking Heads and a few other bands, were basically artist/musicians, so their shows/music/ videos are conceived n presented from both musical and visual perspectives

By the way, the dramatic moves... through Brian Eno's producing you connect to Bowie, and through him you connect to the origin of low-budget grand scale theatrics - Jacques Brel.
