I hear you, and I can relate. I grew up in Austin, and we had an incredible punk scene in the mid 70s throughout the early 90s, during the post-punk, post new wave eras. I was a teenager, and went to all the punk, and new wave shows in the clubs, as minors were allowed. I was lucky to see amazing local Austin punk and new wave bands, as well as national and international bands, for next to nothing. What was even better, was that the venues were tiny, and my friends and I got to meet and hang out with a lot of the musicians; many of whom went on to be very famous later in life. When that happened, it was nearly impossible to see them in the same way, ever again. But, I am glad so many of them got famous, good for them.

This legendary live clip is taken from Talking Heads' legendary live concert film Stop Making Sense, released in 1984. Legendary director Jonathan Demme filmed Talking Heads playing live over 4 nights at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood in 1983 and turned it into Stop Making Sense. I was 13 when this film came out, just starting junior high, and had no idea who Talking Heads were. I didn't discover the band until I was in high school and slowly developed an appreciation for their music over the years. When I was in college, a small indie/art film theater in my home town showed a revival of Stop Making Sense, so some friends and I went at the last minute. We were able to get tickets and get in, but the theater was so small, we could hardly find seats and it was nearly standing room only. That was ok, though, because once the film got started, after the first few slower opening tracks, the whole audience was on their feet and dancing through nearly the whole film, my friends and I included. It was a transformative, communal experience, one I'll never forget. This song is actually about anxiety over domestic terrorism, survivalist instincts kicking in. If you look up the lyrics, you'll get the picture. Yet as you noted in your reaction, Talking Heads make it fun. Main man David Byrne was one of the first musical artists to make anxiety 'cool,' like you can dance to it. It was kind of his schtick. His dance moves on stage actually come from Japanese theater, which he studied while creating his live persona. They're not textbook perfect by any means, not meant to actually emulate Japanese theater, but the inspiration is there. The running in place and running in circles was supposed to represent people feeling frustrated, like they're going nowhere while trying to survive a domestic terrorist state.

Amazing female BASS Player... look up Carol Kaye.... who???
@ArcFixer Жыл бұрын
Hi Marty. I don't need to look up Carol Kaye. Carol Kaye is the most heard unheard of musician in the World. She laid down the groove on some 10,000 recordings of various genres and was a key member of the elite session band The Wrecking Crew. The Wrecking Crew included other such notables as Glen Campbell and Leon Russell. She's still going strong at the age of 88 and has a KZbin channel. Tina Weymouth had never played bass before the Talking Heads. She was founding member Chris Frantz's girlfriend. But she had taught herself to play guitar. They couldn't find a bass player they liked so they asked her to give the bass a try. She succeeded magnificently. What more could you ask? Carol Kaye's eminence among all bassists, not just female, does not throw shade on Tina Weymouth's incredible talent in any way, shape, or form. Give credit where credit is due. Cheers.

The 80's was the pinnacle of the modern music world. We created and then perfected every modern music style from pop to rock to rap. Talking heads was America's best Punk band, and yes I mean Punk not Funk. They were without dispute the greatest live performance of my generation. You went to the concert to exhaust your body through dance to bypass your mental defenses to accept a message of no matter what happens to you in life you have too "Go Forward, move ahead ". Talking Heads (the name) is I think a homage to Devo (canadian punk band!) because they were "through being cool" which instead of destroying them made them great. You need to listen to the whole live album "stop making sense". I loved how the stage performance is just people playing music, no fancy lights or explosions or stage trickery, just people, lets go, let's do it.

I think it's worth noting that David Bryne, the lead singer, is on the autism spectrum and I 100% think that's part of why they've got such a dynamic, different sort of sound than most bands. His quirky singing combined with the rest of the band's (esp Tina, the bassist) outstanding playing just makes this an outstanding band.

@@karenfryberger4260 To be fair, that might be why the rest of the band isn't very fond of him. Outright social awkwardness isn't always a good thing when you are in a band with three other people. There is no doubt he was creatively brilliant in the late 70s thru the mid 80s... but by many accounts he's kind of a jerk. From one music lover to another, you need this whole concert in your life. It changed my life, honestly. You don’t have to react to it, but watch it. I wasn’t even a Talking Heads fan before I watched it. It’s a movie called “Stop Making Sense” directed by Jonathan Demme. It’s just a concert, but it’s amazing. It starts with David Byrne, the singer on the first song. Then every song they add a new member. It sounds crazy, but it’s sooooo entertaining. I’ve watched it hundreds of times. This song is with the full band. Don’t be like me and watch it late in life. Cheers! ❤

Great selection! This concert was designed to be filmed by director Johnathan Demme. It starts out w/Byrne alone on stage and slowly adds ppl, sets, instruments, etc as each song is performed. One of the great concert films of all time. Thanks Polo!

You know I grew up on this at the time of the New Wave and all that and I still think that bunches like the Talking Heads or the Specials or Tom Tom Club or the Selecter or English Beat or Fun Boy Three that had blacks and whites playing and writing together were the absolute top musically and still are in regards to the cultural synergy these groups were able to reach. Truth is it was pure magic and for me and the other punks and weirdos of my gen simply the norm. So sad we live in a world where this is not much possible because we are all missing out on so much. Thanks God all these people were so brave. Needless to say none of them had it easy. Never stop praying that these vibes and open attitudes come back and everybody just chills. Peace out!

The running hooks into the lyrics about going undercover during wartime. He's part of the resistance, always moving, always in disguise, setting bombs, fighting back. He's given up everything, including friendship and love, to fight against the enemy. David Byrne (the lead singer) wrote a number of dark songs about resistance and clandestine war. Check out their song "Listening Wind", an amazing song that's not remembered much, told from a viewpoint I've never heard in any other song. A great band with great music. (They were all in art school when they met and started the band, which explains their unique way of presenting themselves.

Stephen Colbert just interviewed Talking Heads on their 40th anniversary. They have a film coming out on IMAX. For those of you who don’t know, the drummer and female guitarist have been married to each other for 40 years. Interesting tidbit. I was in the military as was Tina’s father. He was a Navy Admiral and we happen to both have the same auto insurance company…USAA. Years ago when Tina and Chris were living in San Antonio where USAA is headquartered, their magazine did an article on the couple. I remember she was holding a gorgeous turquoise guitar.

I saw the Talking Heads on this tour in San Francisco, at the Warfield Theater, with the English Beat opening. It was the single greatest show I have ever seen (and I have seen 100's of shows). The power and positive energy was absolutely electric, and the crowd felt that electricity and seemed to dance right along with the band. I'm so glad you liked it. Burning Down the House and Take me to the River are must listens for sure.

So I have seen Stop Making Sense in a movie theater several times...including seeing it the evening it opened...and the intensity of the movie and this song in particular is hard to describe. More than once, when Byrne takes off and starts running around the stage, most of the audience in the movie theater starts running as well...up the aisles, through the lobby...and the audience is on their feet and dancing for the rest of the show. The musical adventure that got the original Talking Heads lineup to THIS is truly amazing. They started out as a stripped down quartet of art students with stage fright. Between working with producer Brian Eno and Adrian Belew, the influences of Fela Kuti, and then stack the band with funk masters like Bernie Worrell (synth), Alex Weir (guitar), and Steve Scales (percussion) they truly caught lightning in a bottle. Stop Making Sense is where it all comes together for all to see. I do think it is worth listening to "Remain In Light". Also check out the double album "The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads" which consists of live tracks, many featuring Adrian Belew on guitar.

David Byrne and Freddie Mercury from Queen IMHO put on the greatest stage shows ever. They are both great compsers, writers, directors and and musicians. David has this crazy ability to run around stage for 2 hrs and never miss a breath or a note while singing his artistic mind is unbelivelible. Thank you for doing this one haven't thought about them in years gonna watch the whole concert now...peace

@@robertirvine6307Yup, and I think the point of the comment was that neither Polo nor many of the posters here have taken note of the lyrics. Yeah, it's a banger, yeah Byrne is a remarkable showman and the band absolutely nails it... but the lyrics are serious. Give me chills every time, especially these days when we've seen the US Capitol attacked, people openly threatening violence and talking about civil war. The message is that calamitous events can make partying to good music, and all that goes with it, a distant memory. Don't assume it can't happen to us. "Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit? Heard about Pittsburgh, PA? You oughta know not to stand by the window Somebody see you up there I got some groceries, some peanut butter To last a couple of days But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no headphones Ain't got no records to play" - Talking Heads
@plusfour1 Жыл бұрын
@@civildiscourse2000 Absolutely this music is serious. But it's not just music, it's performance art. The good time party atmosphere is meant to be totally ironic. The danger is the American public aren't getting what goes on because they are too busy with their superficial lives. Polo included it seems. Listen to the chorus of the song. "This ain't no party, this ain't no disco, this ain't no foolin around..."
