It's not going to work though...not for someone who can't remember the lines he just heard...."You can't let go and you can't hold on".

Tell me more. I'd love to get a handle on your thoughts on this. When you say "This is not going to work," what is "this" that needs to work? And what does "it" working mean? Do better next time.

You’re doing a wonderful reaction. Remember that the author, Robert Hunter, the Dead’s lyricist, if you asked him what the lyrics meant he’d reply “What do they mean to you?”

The Grateful Dead's iconic skull w/the lightning bolt logo was designed by Augustus Owsley Stanley, III, aka, "Bear," one of the seminal figures in both the Grateful Dead family and the 1960 psychedelic scene. Owsley was the band's patron when they were first starting, and his association with them goes back to 1965. He was their first sound man, and he was the first to begin recording their gigs professionally - he was a true pioneer in the realm of live sound reinforcement (their famous "Wall of Sound" amplification and speaker system was his design) and also a pioneer recorder of live rock music. And...he was ALSO the most celebrated LSD chemist of the 1960's, and (indirectly) a big reason why the SF music scene took off as it did. He's a prominent figure in Tom Wolfe's "The Electric KoolAid Acid Test". Much more info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owsley_Stanley Anyway, he designed the logo as a) an easy way of identifying the Dead's gear, especially in festival situations, and b) a calling card of this band's musical intentions: the Grateful Dead are going to try to electrify the space between your ears, if you let them. This music is intended to be psychedelic - it is actively trying to transport you to someplace else. The logo is a direct visual representation of the music's intent. Thanks for taking the time to give this music a listen, and for trying to parse it out. One suggestion: pay more attention to the actual music being played, less attention to the lyrics. The lyrics are great, but that music at the end of The Wheel, before it fades out? THAT'S why so many of us still care about this stuff. Listen to how it crackles with energy as it plunges deeper into itself, final destination unknown. This cut is a bit uneven due to the vocals, but when the music clicks as it does at the end, pay attention to *that*; that's where the magic happens with this group. In this case, this particular version of The Wheel is contained within an extended version of another song, Playin' in the Band, and in fact this whole second set was one long sequence of songs going into and back out of other songs: Playin' In The Band-> Drums-> The Wheel-> Playin' In The Band (Reprise)-> Saint Stephen-> Not Fade Away-> Saint Stephen-> One More Saturday Night A free stream of the complete show from June 29, 1976 is available here: archive.org/details/gd76-06-29.sbd.bertha.31144.sbeok.flacf BTW, I'm going to make another suggestion to check out the web site headyversion.com, to see which versions of these songs us Deadheads like best. You should certainly explore this stuff however you wish to, but it may be helpful to know which songs (and which versions of those songs) are most appreciated by the Deadhead community. After all, the Grateful Dead played 2200+ shows over their 30 year live career, and not all of those were worth revisiting. IMHO, the top 5% of the songs on headyversion.com are going to give you a better listening experience than you will have by randomly choosing a show. Maybe give the site a try and see what you think? Updated with a bit more pedantry. ;-) Keep up the good work!

The Wheel is the wheel of life. It moves along no matter what you do. Thunder and lightning are hardships along the way. But he's encouraging you to try just a little bit harder, just a little bit more to keep moving forward on your own path.

The most accurate thing you said here is, "I forgot I was listening to music".. As a Dead Head, since 1977, I can appreciate that statement. They become more than just music, as if that wouldn't be enough.. Good Luck. Keep on keeping on...

This version of the Wheel was the meat in a Playing in the Band sandwich. Playing>Wheel>Playing. The fade out was an editing choice.

Always loved this song, but I would have to argue that the greatest version of this song is (ironically when it came to the Dead) the studio version on Garcia's first solo album. The main instrument is the pedal steel and that works amazingly well. You might not do a video on it, but it's worth checking out. It's no more than 5 min.

My thought about if the thunder don't get you then the lightening will kind of goes back to the wheel, which could be time and the way the world changes, and the fact of life is that eventually we all die. It's a stretch, but perhaps it's just pointing out you can try and avoid calamity, but someway, somehow we're all going to die - eventually something will get us all. And the wheel could also be the earth, but I'm thinking of the wheel of time, which the spinning of the globe is a reasonable substitute for the concept.

No thet only time they fade out the music is in studio. I only saw the dead from 1968 to 1975 before I moved to Hawaii and I got to see the Jerry Garcia band live for the last time. In 1990. No one could play guitar like Jerry. And I missed the latter years living in Hawaii. But thanks to u-tube I can injoy all there different years of playing. Listen to more of the dead on live tours. You will get a lot out of it. 22:37 22:37

I interpret "If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will" as how we often live not really paying attention to what's going on around us. Stuck in our own heads per say. The lightning and thunder represents God, higher power, or universe saying wake up buddy! Enlightenment.

The wheel is turning and you can't slow down, You can't let go and you can't hold on, You can't go back and you can't stand still, If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will. Won't you try just a little bit harder, Couldn't you try just a little bit more? Won't you try just a little bit harder, Couldn't you try just a little bit more? Round, round robin run round, got to get back to where you belong, Little bit harder, just a little bit more, A little bit further than you gone before. The wheel is turning and you can't slow down, You can't let go and you can't hold on, You can't go back and you can't stand still, If the thunder don't get you then the lightning will. Small wheel turn by the fire and rod, Big wheel turn by the grace of God, Every time that wheel turn 'round, Bound to cover just a little more ground. -- Robert Hunter

I listen to the greatful dead every morning. I ve see them many times. I think you try to diagnose it to much. You needed to see them live to understand what they really meant. I don’t know what he meant with the wheel. But it was one of my favorite songs from the Jerry Garcia band. Not the greatful dead. They all had there own bands

Except the symbol came out before 13 people had played in the band. I’ve heard lots of theories, from the significance of 13 as a lucky or unlucky number, to the 13 original states of the USA

@@GratefulAmericans I always heard that it had changed as more people joined the band, but I just went back and looked at my album, and it also had 13 points. So you were right. Now I've got to check out Owsley's account, and see what he said. Hmm. He just said he thought the bar across the red and blue should be a lightning bolt, he never said why it has 13 points

The image of The Wheel that Robert Hunter was based on Ezekiel's vision of the merkavah chariot flying above him. It is one of the primary symbols of high mystical experience in Kabbalah.

@@JB-Deadskins Yeah, the primitive SYF on "History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One (Bear's Choice)" released in July of 1973 has 13 points as well. With Tom C and the Godchauxs I count nine members at the time that album came out. And the bolt w/o the skull predates that.
