One Tree Hill has been my favorite for a long time now, originally when this album came out this was my song, but when I found out U2/ Bono wrote one tree hill about a roadie who have been with them many years and was a Kiwi and One Tree hill is a famous And landmark in NZ and in Auckland, it has much controversy but in the end it is for all New Zealanders and visitors alike, unfortunately activists vandalised it to the point it’s now gone, replaced by an Obelisk,the very thing the activists protest about they themselves destroyed the one thing that brought unity, so often the case by selfish ignorant and and narcissistic people. Greg Carrol who was that roadie was of Māori decent he took Bono to that hill, I always wondered how he’d have felt about this. Song is usually only played in NZ and Aus in concerts a fav here.

"The Joshua Tree" album is a masterpiece from start to finish. U2 uses a lot of Christian imagery in its lyrics, including this song ("thorn twist in your side," "you give it all"). Is he talking about his wife, or Jesus/God/The Holy Spirit? The song could be interpreted in multiple ways.

Bono wrote this from his own perspective. He was a married man with his childhood sweetheart ( who he is still with being married to for 40 years ) but he was also fronting the biggest band in the world and all the temptations that comes with it. It was the struggle of being a husband and the worlds biggest rockstar. Staying loyal to his wife regardless of the temptations. A story about the clashing and juggling of being Bono the worlds famous rockstar and Bono the husband. One of U2’s greatest songs.

The first time I heard this song it was being presented as someone losing a loved one. Since then every time I hear it, the chorus stands out, presenting the thought there is someone you care about that you can no longer be with ("I can't live with, or without you" ). That's just my own experience of the song, however.

Loving your reactions guys! You might have missed the shrouded meaning of this song though. Like most of the songs on the album it came from (Joshua Tree), it's really about a person struggling with their faith (in this case catholicism). Bono sings about a thorn in your side which is a small nod towards Jesus and also later on about how 'you gave it all but I want more' referring to Jesus sacrifice. Admittedly these are not overly explicit and he does refer to a woman which I think is a deliberate way to give the song a multiple meaning. Ultimately the person Bono can't live with or without is Jesus / God. Bono explores this idea more fully in another song off the Joshua Tree album 'I still haven't found what I'm looking for' which I think would be another great U2 song for you to react to. Peace and Love from across the pond.

King and Queen, we live in a time where music is bought one song at a time. Back in the day, you bought an entire CD/album made up of 10-12 songs. The artists would make "concept" albums full of great songs under a certain theme or vein of experience. These albums were treasure troves for their fans. The songs were somehow intentionally or unintentionally sonically connected to each other which in turn connected to their listeners. Music is divine worship. Great music in any genre is an expression of a human heart towards a larger life-force. A life-force that every human shares. A life-force that can resurrect an old song from days of yore but when played in the present, still has impacting, heart stirring vitality and sonic truth. I'm just saying y'all...

"Bono wrote the lyrics during his first night visiting the Côte d'Azur in 1986,[12] while struggling to reconcile his responsibilities as both a married man and a musician.[6] His wanderlust in belonging to a musical act was often at odds with his domestic life.[6] While writing the lyrics, he realised that neither facet of his life defined him, but rather the tension between the two did. He explained that the final lyric is about torment and how repressing desires only makes them stronger.[6]"

If you want to take that from it by all means, but this song isn't intentionally religious. It's very much about a relationship, and not a relationship with God. Bono on the song: "I didn't understand at that point the freedom that I would receive from a committed relationship. I was feeling guilty if I was talking to somebody in their record company who was really attractive. I was you know, just everything was at 11. But that's why 'With or Without You' is so operatic and that's OK."
@jarbeck1
@jarbeck1 2 жыл бұрын
@@brownsey1 interesting quote - thank you. Like most great U2 songs I think it’s open for interpretation. It may be about a relationship but he isn’t speaking directly to his partner. “On a bed of nails SHE makes me wait, and I wait without YOU.” Who is she, and who is you? I’ll keep taking it as I always have. :-)

@@jarbeck1 Ha, no problem! Didn't mean to come across as condescending, so sorry if it did. It is an interesting quote alright. But absolutely, take what you want from the song. I would also add, from my own perspective, while I don't think it's specifically religious, Bono uses religious metaphors. Typing from memory of the lyrics but the opening line, about the spear in the side, very much Jesus on the cross vibes.

Seriously, one of the greatest pop/rock songs of all time. It gets me every effin time. It's the chords and the buildup and the conviction, I think. Like he truly means what he's singing. ONE is another one by U2, maybe even better than this song, that always gets my sentimental ass.

Many think this is a romantic song but it is about one man's relationship with god. And no, it is not a christian song, as the subject is not kissing ass to the deity but in fact lamenting he cant live with or without him, locked in a perpectual loop of anguish. He thinks god expects too much of him but he also expects much from god as well and yet none comes of it.

You are correct. Most of U2 songs are related to God.

Great song. Check out some of their stuff from the 90s when they were working with the producer known as FLOOD. For your own enjoyment check out the Zoo TV live concert dvd and the POPMART live concert dvd. Both are on youtube and both concerts broke records for most expensive stage and lighting set yp and biggest grossing concerts of all time.

one of their best. More U2 is welcome. Like so many U2 songs it starts makkng you think it's about a love story or a relationship and by the end you think it's about God. “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me." -- Jesus.

This song is amazing and timeless. It sounds like something that could come out tomorrow, but this was release in 1987.

Check out them live at Slane Castle 2001, try "All I want is you" and then for extra, the song they played immediately after was "where the streets have no name"... The live atmosphere and crowd reactiin is truely amazing... It was a very especially time in Ireland and for Bono and the group

There aren't that many albums ever where the weakest song is still great. This is one of them. Every single cut on this album (with the possible exception of "Bullet the Blue Sky") could be a hit single. Every single track sucks you in, fills you up, let's you down again. Great ambiance, great lyrics, great vibe, superb musicianship and engineering... This one makes the short list with albums like Dark Side of the Moon and Dreamboat Annie and Sergeant Pepper's and Boston.

This song integrated the work of two producers with very different visions. The first producer was Daniel Lanois, who wanted an etheral, moody sound with minimal percussion. When U2 was mixing the song, they brought in Steve Lillywhite, the producer of their early albums. His first reaction was, "Where are the drums?" So he amped up the power and told Larry Mullen to pound the drums. These two competing visions blended into one incredible sound.

I often wonder if those two guys behind the curtain are a big part of the reason we all love U2 so much. That album is just insanely good. It came out when I was in Jr high school, and it still blows my mind.

Through the 80s and well into the 90s, Bono had a world-class set of lungs on him. Not a lot of guys could hit those notes or sustain them... In his prime, Bono was one of the best frontmen in rock & roll history.
