Genuinely dont know how people can listen to ultraviolence and think its glamorizing but then i have to remind myself that not everyone has experienced a relationship like that. I found this song while i was still in a physically abusive relationship, i told myself that it was okay that my partner hit me because they would cry and apologize afterwards. I ended up viewing their violence as love, so the lines "he hit me and it felt like a kiss" "he hurt me but it felt like true love" hit me like a damn train every single time. Im glad you understood the meaning of the song, i had a feeling you would 💗

A friend of mine had a super interesting insight into the Ultraviolence line "I can hear sirens, sirens, he hit me and it felt like a kiss'. She said she thinks that because emotional abuse is invisible (like ultraviolet light... "Ultraviolence"), it can be impossible to make anyone believe it's happening to you (and often you don't even realise it yourself), whereas being hit creates a visible mark that you can show as proof and is also easier to recognise as abuse. So she sees the line as saying that because the abuse has now turned physical, at least the sirens will finally come and save her because she finally has proof of it - not only for other people, but for herself. And that's why it 'felt like a kiss' , because it was like a 'thank god I can now see this for what it really is and ask for help'. Not saying this is what Lana actually means, I just thought that was a fascinating way to look at it.
@PassionDumpofanAutistАй бұрын
This is freakin brilliant! And as someone (smart, capable and emotionally intelligent) who took 7 years to realize I was being emotionally abused, it speaks to my soul as well. Thanks for sharing that! 🖤🖤🖤

@@PassionDumpofanAutistI’m so sorry to hear you went through that. Thankfully I haven’t experienced it myself, but physical DV was rife on one side of my family, and also my best friend (who is basically my sister) - also smart, capable and emotionally intelligent - was in a 12 year emotionally abusive coercively controlling relationship and I saw first hand how it slowly dimmed her light, chipped away at her soul, her self-worth, everything. Thankfully she got out, and I’m so glad to hear you did too. Sending love! 💜💜💜

" He hit me and it felt like a kiss (...) reminded me of when we were kids" Lana grew up with an abusive mother that's why she remembers the violence from her childhood, later in her more recent albums you'll get more info. Jim as well might have been raised up in violence yet in his case he copies the actions he grew up with and let's his anger on Lana in an abusive form since that's the only way he knows how to comprehend his emotions.

'blue' is featured on every single album on multiple songs heavily throughout the years n takes on any and all the meanings of blue that we know!! like 'feeling blue' i.e. sad/depressed, blue flame being the hottest flame, 'talk till you're blue in the face' (blue=lack of oxygen/out of breath) all the phrases and meanings associated with blue you best believe Lana has incorporated them into her work! like she says '"it's my fav color and my fav tone of song"' i.e. she likes sad songs. she says "'singing blues" referring to the genre of music. she sees herself as a student and fan of jazz and blues music. so yeah blue is a heavily used concept throughout the years

No matter how many times I have listened to the song ultraviolence it ALWAYS hits me really hard. I cry every single time. The play on "I can hear (police) sirens sirens violins violins" instead of 'violence' n how her mind changes the police sirens sound to violins to protect herself, and the "we can go back to the start when I don't know who you are" - wish I had never even known you to begin with and the "I could have died right there in his arms b/ he was right beside me"- he could have literally killed me right there; "Jim taught me that loving him was never enough"- learning that no matter how much I loved it was never enough for you. ahhh I can go on n on, it always gets to me. I bawl. This entire record is incredibly magical in the hardest way I cry a lot and I have listened to it hundreds of time!!! Highly recommend sitting with a lot of lyrics in this album. The things she isn't saying and reading between the lines brings a new experience every fking time!! No one was doing this at that time she was soo ahead. I am so glad finally now several decades later she is finally getting the recognition!

ultraviolence is about a cult leader-cult follower-like-relationship. This is a quote from Lana back in 2014: “I used to be a member of an underground sect which was reigned by a guru,” she said. “He surrounded himself with young girls. He thought that he had to break people first to build them up again. At the end I quit the sect.” i dont know if the song is about this exact experience or if its just inspired by it like she was with a man who was so toxic and she was so willingly going for more and more that reminded her of that. anyway its obviously about toxic relationship and going for more but theres nothing romantic about it - i think the critics are just dumb lol its a super sad and strong song
@PassionDumpofanAutistАй бұрын
I think that certainly inspired it, as well as her relationship with alcohol and abusive relationships she’s had. I believe they are all woven in there tbh. 🖤
@Marqo974Ай бұрын
Some info that can help you to understand the album better: - The name of the album may also remind you of ultraviolet light, which is dangerous for humans and it's invisible, just like his Ultraviolence. - Some theories says that some songs may have double meaning - not only abusive relationship, but also her addiction to alcohol. - In Cruel Word it's like she introduce the theme of the album, the relationship that is over, and then in the next songs she explains the details about the relationship. - She dated a Scottish musician, Barrie-James, for like 3 years and it's possible, that he is the guy she's talking about in this album. There are multiple reasons people think that, but also she's singing in Brooklyn Baby, that her boyfriend is in the band, in West Coast she says, that she's leaving him to go chase her dreams as a singer - she went to LA. And she also probably mentions him in other albums in some songs.. e.g. California (about how she wants him to come to California) and The Next Best American Record (about writing songs together). They recorded song Summer Wine together, he is credited in a few of her songs as writer with Lana - Brooklyn Baby from this album, some songs from Blue Bannisters (because she released some old songs of hers in that album, and in some unreleased songs.. and also in 2021 he released old song that they recorded back in time togehter... so it seems like they're in good terms now.. - Brooklyn Baby was meant to be a duet with Lou Reed, but unfortunatelly he passed away the day they planned to record it - I read that Pretty when you cry was freestyled and recorded in one take. When you coonect it with UV, it could be meant in the way that he likes to make her sad and feel bad, because then when he come back, he's like a saviour who raises her up. The more he brings her down, the more she needs him and he can feel the power he has over her. And I love how her voice seems so fragile and vulnerbale in that song, so heartbreaking.. - Many times she's ironic, satirical or critising the public view on things.. just like in the songs Money power glory or Fucked my way.. People critised her and accused her of being inauthentic, just wanting money and fame, getting famous thanks to sex with some influential men.. so she was like fuck it, I'll make a song about it 😄 - Btw she's from Lake Placid and it was apparently her mother that sent her away to boarding school to get sober when she had problems with alcohol. She also lived in Spain as a teenager few months, then she lived on Long Island with her uncle Dave who taught her to play the guitar and she began writing (that is when it all started).. then she lived in NYC, singing in small bars and nightclubs. After few attempts to break through she met Ben and Ed, managers, with whom she still works today. She went to London, where her career started with songs from Born to die. Only then she moved to California.

"will you still love me when I shine from words but not from beauty" is her asking if they'll still love her when she is old and no longer has her beauty but has her intelligence and words (older and wiser). fun fact: almost all of the album was done in one take! They had all the lyrics and instrumental finished up (except pretty when you cry which was free styled) and did all the vocals in one night, the producer said that 90% of the vocals were done in one take and only a few lines from the whole album were redone also some of my favourite songs from lana are about her Scottish ex boyfriend barrie-james, its rumoured that brooklyn baby, shades of cool, california and west coast are about him (also the songs in uv deluxe and more in the albums coming up). He's also a singer/songwriter and is credited in a lot of her songs even in her later albums even though they split up a decade ago. He was also the inspiration behind the line 'my p*ssy tastes like pepsi-cola' lol. It's known that they split due to Barrie's mental health, Lana said in an interview that they split ways because he had deal with 'some stuff' and referred to him as unwell on a few occasions 😕 you'll notice most of the songs about him refer to his mental health (especially shades of cool and black beauty). it seems like theyre both still friends even to this day though, he often sings her songs when he goes live on Instagram and it breaks my heart everytime 😅, after finding out california was about him i never listened to it again without crying Edit: this is so long sorry lmao but i also wanted to add that another music reactor i watch was actually contacted by Barrie who said he wanted to thank him for supporting Lana 😭 so cute he was watching reaction videos 🥺

omg so readyyy!!! lana got crucified by the media for ultraviolence , they said she "glamorized" abuse, when in my opinion, an abuse victim can tell their story however they may need to, its her experience and it does a good job at emphasizing how an victim feels in the cycle of abuse. i know im glad she made this song and album bc i can relate personally and it makes me feel less alone in this experience, which is what art and music should do. candy in most of her songs is referencing drugs lol. When lana uses the name Jim, it usually refers to one of these things: a general name used for her exes, Jim beam (alcohol), and ppl like Jim Morrison and Jim Jones occasionally. Ultraviolence means so much to me, and it INFURIATES me when ppl say she glamorized abuse, bc no, ultraviolence shows how I felt in abusive relationships, shows the victims perspective in an accurate manner, how it becomes soo so difficult to leave somebody who has manipulated u into thinking they love you, even while hurting you, so thank u so much for ur appreciation of the song and its meaning. i think "i couldve died right there cuz jim was right beside me" is such a sad line and a double entendre, bc in a physically abusive relationship u feel as though u could lose ur life at any moment due to how close u are with an abuser, its scary. Shades of cool is my #1 offf this album. the meaning, the vocals, and the guitar bridge is PERFECTION. u hit the nail on the head, lana is saying she can't help or fix her man who is dealing w mental health struggles and drug issues, etc. in shades of c Lou reed was actually supposed to do the vocals in the back of Brooklyn baby but he actually died shortly before they were supposed to record. pretty when you cry was freestyled and done in one take!!! amazing song, i love the guitar bridge in this one as well. i think it's interesting, a lot of abusers tell u ur "pretty when u cry" after they r the ones that made u cry, another display of the cycle of abuse and how it continues. ur correct; money power glory is supposed to be satire, the media came after lana saying she was a bit of a gold digger so in this song she kinda just leans into that portrayal. fucked my way up to the top is also satire yes, she was criticized by ppl saying she slept w ppl to get famous, which didn't happen. and also she makes a dig at Lorde after Lorde came for her, "mimicking me is a fuckin bore, to me" was meant for Lorde. cant wait for more lana!!!!

fked my way up to the top is her being ironicl. Her peers like Lorde were criticizing her HEAVILY for her so called "anti girl power anti feminist" approach. (at this time "girl power" the term was it, with Beyonce's who run the world and Lorde's debut, and Katy Perry's kissed a girl n liked it etc era, it was the whole girl bossing era. This feminism era failed to include women like LDR who don't fit the "strong" women box. LDR has said true feminism is inclusive and should make room for women like her too and not just the strong female empowerment types) And here comes LDR not fitting that mold. Her peers and critics (Lorde etc) were like "she must have just fked her way up" dismissing her art n success whilst also copying her new non mainstream alt style so this was an ironic "so what if I slept my way to the top who cares and what are you going to do abt it other than mimicking my style- psst fk off whilst I go lay down in my diamonds n pearls" kinda vibes.

Yeah, tbh I can’t remember what I even said in this first reaction but I’ve listened to it about 10 more times since and I think after the 3rd or so time I could really feel the anger and rage that is subtle in this song from a first listen. I certainly understood from the beginning it was satirical. That makes total sense to be in response to critique of not fitting the boss girl narrative. She threatens some of that narrative by being her authentic self and it seems that some (not all) feminists forget why the movement was started by our ancestors. And it certainly wasn’t to force every woman to fit in a specific box. That’s what they were fighting to get away from (in amongst many other things obviously). Not to move from one box to another. Because for most of the recent history women have been put into boxes (men as well tbh), and anyone that doesn’t fit their narrative feels like a threat to that. Myself as a neurodivergent woman has personally always been on the fringe of society’s expectations and I’ve never fit any box that’s been put in front of me. These people have lost the plot imo. Lana has done more for my sense of womanhood and empowerment than many of these “boss girl” types tbh. And I’m a proud feminist in the true sense of the term. But I’m not above critiquing where the movement has gone off the rails imo. Anyways, that’s my rant on that. Lol

I think Ultraviolence is my faourite album of Lana ❤🔥 I get emotional, because it's been around 10 years since it was released and I still remember my first listen in my living room and how it seald my love for her ❤About the "Jim", I feel like listeners too often think of "man" while listening to Lana's songs, while she frequently writes about her RELATIONSHIP with addiction or fame or city, at least in her earlier yers (or it can be both, having a double meaning). So Jim is probably the alcohol and her addiction (Jim Beam) I heard some interpretations that also points to cult leader Jim Jones who lived around 50s - 60s, since it suits the period Ultraviolence sound seems inspired by and since Lana said this in an interview➡ :"“Ultraviolence” looks back on my time in New York. I was, for a while, part of a sloping underground scene, which was dominated by a guru. He believed in the concept of destroying his followers first and then rebuilding them. I fell for him because at that time, I longed for security". Also, this album is JUST NOW getting it's deserved reviews and it makes me want to cry because FINALLYYY - like, for me it was a love from the first listen, but also FINALLY because it means our society is changing, it is ok to depict the point o view of a victim, to BE a victim and talk about it, it's the abuser who should be ashamed. I remember at the time it was released the songs that were called feminist had to be empowering, but it almost screams toxic positivity to me and it narrows down the feminism, it excludes those who are still struggling, it erases the trauma and the process of healing. ALSO! I haven't seen anyone saying this in the comments yet, but during the time of releasing this album there was a drama with label: "Auerbach openly criticized her label's role on the creative output of the record. He stated the label threatened with not extending the recording session for Ultraviolence any longer unless they heard something from the record.[7] After they sent them [the label] the rough mix of what they had at the moment they were unhappy about the results. They even threatened Lana the record wasn't going to be out unless she worked with "the Adele producer", who most fans speculate to be Paul Epworth, long time producer on Adele records, who also reworked previously leaked demo of "Black Beauty" to fit in more with the sound of the record. According to Auerbach, after Epworth listened to the same rough mix he loved it and stated the album was amazing and that he wouldn't do anything to change it. His words may have influenced the label's own opinions as they changed their mind suddenly and let Lana release the record" Plus in Rolling Stone interview Auerbach emphasized that "she sang live with a seven-piece band. That's the whole record - a seven-piece band with her singing live. It was crazy"

back from my parents house and i'm making my evening with watching the video. got tissues in case, hah. cruel world is such a good opening to the album. people can describe their relationships with abuse and addictions however they want. unless people write only about great sides of drugs for example, then i could maybe understand that. but artrist like lana, they may write about longing with subjects like that in beautiful and kind of romantic manner, it's still clearly something she herself is against and wishes it was different. i can't speak of abuse in romantic relationships or addictions, but i do have very complicated relationship with my parents and all people romanticize their past. remember the good parts and hope to hold on to that. it's very human. loved the reaction as always. haven't listenend to that album in a while, ultraviolence, west coast and brooklyn baby are probably my favorites. though the albums as a whole is really good, so the favorites always can change within every new listen, hah. always love how ulfiltred your thoughts are. your authenticity is very clear and very inspiring :)

SO WELL SAID regarding Ultraviolence. In my opinion, the people who accused her of 'glamourizing' abuse with this song are not only diminishing, invalidating and disrespecting Lana's own trauma, but the trauma of all survivors.
@PassionDumpofanAutistАй бұрын
That’s totally what made me angry when I listened to it knowing it was criticized. I don’t usually talk like that about people tbh (or I try not to) but you can see the visceral reaction I had when I said “f*** the people who said this was glamorizing”. It made me angry. Lol

I always took "…his Bonnie on the side" as she feels like Bonnie from Bonnie and Clyde. A fully devoted woman who would do anything for him, but she’s his Bonnie on the side, so that devotional isn’t reciprocated nor is his love as much as hers. That’s another reason she is a "sad girl."
@PassionDumpofanAutistАй бұрын
I personally think it’s a double meaning and I certainly think you’re bang on with this one!! 🖤
@arthurandre3354Ай бұрын
there are multiple theories surrounding this album and some of its songs. I really like the one that says that Ultraviolence (the song) and Cruel World are about her relationship with alcohol (the addiction at a young age and later sobriety) or at least allude to it. Particularly in Ultraviolence because of the whole Jim being a reference to Jim Beam. Idk, I just find the idea that Lana was comparing an alcohol addiction to an abusive relationship very amusing but truly there's no way to really know unless she officially says what she meant when writing the song.
@PassionDumpofanAutistАй бұрын
I totally see that and think that’s definitely one of the meanings. I really think she’s clever enough to have multiple meanings going on at once. It’s so fascinating! I was picking it up in cruel world but I also now see it with Ultraviolence and I love that interpretation. 🖤
@arthurandre3354Ай бұрын
@PassionDumpofanAutist it's a very popular interpretation. I'm loving this series btw, love from Brazil 🖤
@xtldcАй бұрын
I once heard her say that often times when she is referring to a boyfriend / partner, a relationship, being in love, missing someone, or wanting someone, she is talking about alcohol, particularly in her earlier music.

gotta love how she goes full dark side on this album like the themes on this album are NOT good not healthy you know but she's so human by singing it like it is and put out for people to listen, not saying that this is good but it's just how she's feeling ughhhhh she was NOT scared of letting people know that's she's was not perfect and it was kinda of a big F* YOU to the born to die bad criticism

u got to watch the mvs of this album cs hear me out i think it is all cinnected bith the ones in born to die too and all telling a story because she uses the same actors so in btd mv we see her in the hands of a boy dying in blue jeans she drowns with that same actor in shades of cool she is seen in scenes in the pool while an old man is looking at her while she's mad at first but then it kinna tells the story as if she's already dead and she's a ghost hunting him , people had a lot to say abt the old man that plays in most of her mvs she said it's embarrassing that ppl think like that and to her he is an influential and great person and filmed with him her latest mv in candy necklaces , anyway an icon

West Coast was the turning point realizing that I don't like her slow albums like this and Honeymoon. I was really upset that the song slowed down for the chorus (and still am). The pre-chorus is one of my favorite parts of any Lana song that isn't on BTD and NFR and then the song suddenly turns into the other songs. If I were focused on the lyrics of a song when listening to it I might have a different opinion on those albums. But the whole style makes it really hard to listen to the whole song, especially because they are sooooo long😭
