There are so many ways ‘white mustang could be interpreted’. ‘Why am i staying,’ youre wine, im stained,’ ‘said youre a wild mistake,’ ‘youre why i must stay,’ ‘yo why am i staying’, ‘the day i saw your white mistake(s), said youre a wild mistake.’ And so many more, this is just what ive analyzed from the top of my head; lana is genuinely a musical genius . So this one is interesting, because the music video was actually made for the song The Next Best American Record. The lyrics of that song depict the music video and is about her ex Barry (the guy in the video looks like him so it's an intentional choice), but she decided to scrap that song from Lust For Life (later went on to release it on NFR) and replaced it with White Mustang. The video was then repurposed for White Mustang (which is about G-Eazy who is another musician so it kinda fits), if you notice there's no lipsyncing to the song in the video because they couldn't use any of that footage as she was singing TNBAR lol. So if you react to TNBAR with this video in mind (people actually made edits of them together on KZbin) that might give you some extra perspective and lore.

i think original TNBAR was more about Dan Auerbach(Producer/writter of Ultraviolence), as he was obsessed with writing UV, while also working with many big artists, and all that while he's going through a divorce with his wife. The lyrics are very fitting to his ex-wife perspective.

Well it is confirmed that she says “white mustang, you’re white mustang, the day I saw your white mustang. Said you’re a wild mistake.” But I’m pretty sure Lana intentionally made it sound like she’s saying “why am I staying” it’s technically a double entendre.

I love the double entendre she put while saying white mustang. For me I personally think of it as a reference between what she wants to see and the reality. I associate white with purity and when she says “the day I saw your white mustang” it reminds me to like the day she fell in love with him and the purity of it all, but then the double entendre I also hear. “Why am I staying” which is the reality of her situation that she’s unhappy with it and wants to leave but can’t. Also for the “you’re white mustang” I also hear “you’re wine, I’m stained” which also correlates to when someone spills wine on something and how hard it is to clean that stain and it takes a lot of work to finally become “clean again”. I just thought of the ending of the sing where she talks about him revving the car and she was scared which makes me believe she’s now seeing his white mustang in a negative way instead of a positive pure one, and I like that she emphasizes white mustang and wild mistake at the very end.

This video was actually recorded for the song The Next Best American Record, which is featured on the album Norman F Rockwell! Lana discarded this Lust for Life song and used it for the song White Mustang, which for me made completely no sense with the lyrics. It would definitely be clearer if it was the video for The Next Best American Record, which is about her relationship with Rapper G-Eazy, White Must is also one of them.

Thanks for this reaction! I have listened a lot to it and never heard “why I stayed”; I can totally hear it now and it makes sense with the storyline of the video. Love this song, still. It’s catchy. So many catchy but not great messages. Lol. Still love me some Lana. I do feel capturing certain feelings make for not great messages but is good at capturing how one can feel in the moment, for sure.

Hey this might be a bit off topic, but I have been having dental work done since 6 years old (palate expanders, retainers, braces, dental surgeries) technology is a LOT better these days, but if you're looking for advice I recommend just making sure he has your support (I always wanted my mom in the room with me) and he knows he can voice any concerns he has with you. Just check in with him throughout the process. I grew to really dislike my dentist as a kid/teenager :P

Actually, this music video was originally made for "The next best american record" while it leaked it had some different lyrics ("But YOU were so obsessed with writin' the next best American record But there was nothing left by the time we got to bed, baby, that’s a shame YOU were so obsessed with writin' the next best American record You did it all for fame, you did it all for fame") So basically "you" instead of "we" and how he "did it all for fame" then: "You did it all for fame, tell me how it treats you now You did it all for fame, how does that taste comin' out? You did it all for fame, baby, how's life treatin' you now it's over?" It is rumoured that the song was about G-easy, who she dated back then for a short period I remeber watching this video to that demo version of The next best american record and it fits so much better, starting with the line "My baby used to dance underneath my architecture" and here the first thing that we see is this crazy architecture shot + Lana standing above this guy.

TNBAR was written in like 2016 before she started dating G-Eazy, it's about Barry. But she changed the lyrics cause I think she was becoming friendly again with Barry and made up as friends. Which is probably why she kept it off Lust For Life at the last minute until she could change the lyrics to make it a bit less pointed.

Of all the fan theories people make regarding Lana and her work, I think the whole "why am I staying" thing is the wildest to me because people really act like she is doing something that she literally isn't. It's not even just a theory to them. To some of her fans, it isn't like "oh it sounds like this" or "it could be interpreted like this". They keep acting like that's what she's saying, "period", when... it just isn't, there's a perfectly coherent reason why she keeps mentioning a White Mustang, but it's one of those things that some stans "need" to disregard or they'll shatter. "It's 'why am I staying', do you really think she's saying White Mustang, I mean, it doesn't even make sense, duh!" It's almost like when people act like Lana only says "he hit me and it felt like a kiss" just to quote the name of a song. "Oh, she's not really saying that, that's the name of a song, she's just referencing it." I don't know what's cringier.
