Gotta say man, who are these 5 or 6 people who dislike your reactions?? It's almost every video you post, I noticed. Is it the same 5 or 6 people? Are they trolling or something? I'm really enjoying your reactions to a lot of my favourite bands (mostly 70's & 80's, post-punk & new wave). U give an honest opinion Jay, and it's great watching you get into a ton of great songs, and discovering great bands, realising what made them so good. Keep on keeping on, Jay Vee.

"Fade To Grey" is also a great song from one of his earlier bands, "Visage", and it was a big hit in the UK. Worth checking out as well. As far as Ultravox goes, you have to do "Passionate Reply"... definitely one of their top songs.

It’s important to realize that the song shifts the way an opera would have different scenes and movements but comes back to its central theme. This is a nod to Vienna’s history as an epicenter of classical and opera.

Ultravox were the most underatted bands of the early 80's. Check out other tracks like The Voice, The Thin Wall, Hymn and Dancing With Tears In My Eyes. You should also check out Return To Eden, s live concert they did at the Roundhouse in 2010. It was a reunion show and they were utterly banging.

Ultravox is really far from what you would normally hear in US 2020, a deep dive into early days of UK synthpop 40 years ago. Not many people know about them anymore but bands like Depeche Mode and Muse have taken influences from Ultravox. One of my favourite dance tracks as a teenager sampled their Hymn but I didn't know it until much later.

@@karenglenn6707 It just doesn't seem to matter how much practice I put in, I still keep making the same mistake. I'm now thinking of taking up air viola instead. There are so few air viola players out there that I feel I'm almost certain to get the gig no matter how bad I am. This song is a pop masterpiece of uncommon brilliance, without a doubt. I think as time has passed, more and more people have come to realise just how good it is but I still wish it was an instrumental track. The music is so evocative that it paints (Viennese?) pictures, without any need for words. I'd go as far as to say that this record is up there with the likes of The Beach Boys' "Good vibrations".

Well obviously Ultravox was very impressed from the imperial flair of my home-city.

@@Chrisamusic1 A few of us have noticed that Jayvee likes Scottish singers. So we gave him a list of songs with Scottish singers. That's what this comment was referring to. As for Ultravox, you can hardly claim that Ure was just some guy from Glasgow who happened to be in the band. They were dead in the water. He came along as keyboardist, guitarist, lead singer, and songwriter. Writing not only their greatest and biggest hit (consistently voted as one of the best songs in British history) but also creating the new sound direction which gave them their biggest period of success.

@MisAnnThorpe
@MisAnnThorpe 3 жыл бұрын
@@adamdodgshon638 Considering the success of the singles from Architecture and morality, I'd argue that Genetic engineering and Telegram were relative commercial flops. Likewise, Dazzleships spent 13 on the charts as opposed to A&M's 39 (yes, I just checked!). I'd guess that the record company were less than happy and would take the fact that Locomotion was their first release after the Dazzleships album to be proof of that! I've come to really like Genetic Engineering but it was always going to be a risk as a "comeback" single.
@adamdodgshon638
@adamdodgshon638 3 жыл бұрын
MisAnnThorpe Dazzle Ships was a huge failure, commercially. The band admit they had felt invincible and could put out whatever they wanted and it would be a success. Following up Architecture and Morality was always going to be tough. They had been more experimental earlier in their careers. But let’s face it. Joan Of Arc sounded like nothing else at the time and was certainly pushing the bounds of what could be a commercial success. It paid off. Genetic Engineering didn’t fare as well as any of the previous singles, but If You Leave never made the top 40 at all. Would you call that career suicide too? :-). I have no argument with Dazzle Ships being considered deliberate career suicide as an album but Genetic Engineering is a relatively commercial track from it and did ok. It charted higher than Tesla Girls and all the singles off Crush, which is considered a really commercial album. Almost too commercial. Maybe losing your fans by playing it safe is more career suicide than an album of weird experimentation? :-)

A classic of the New Romantic scene. Love that 808 bass drum at the beginning. This tune is definitely a grower. Later in the track you can tell they didn't have much sequencing in synths in the 1980's, the timing isn't quite perfect which lets you know it's being actually played and not programmed or quantised. Weird that you reacted to Bronski Beat and now Ultravox, both Scottish singers, you should really check out Simple minds, you've likely heard some of their stuff but didn't know, especially "Don't You (Forget about me)" which was in the Breakfast Club soundtrack. You should also try Visage - Fade to Grey, that's another good example.

You have to have some context on what it was like back then, picture the later 70's, fans of good music loved Queen, Pink Floyd, Bowie etc, all analogue, then we had disco, and punk, which where the antithesis of each other, and then computers arrived, and i mean computers many millions of times less powerful than your phone, but the synthisizer came to prominence, and all of a sudden, there where all these new sounds, on a "new wave" of music, bands like Ultravox, Tears for Fears, Spandau ballet etc. music changed overnight, and everything was dripping with electronics, it gave rise to many musical forms, and had a hand in hip-hop to. The singer from this band, Mij Ure ("Jim" backwards) is from two streets away, and the band were based in my part of Glasgow. loved the reaction.

Ultravox is a great band and Midge Ure has one of the best set of lungs in Pop music. He wrote fantastic New Wave songs with the band. However, Ultravox's original singer-writer was John Foxx. In the late 1970s Ultravox with Foxx were as much a Punk band as a synth-Pop band. Foxx's voice wasn't in the same league as Midge Ure's but Foxx had tremendous charisma and energy onstage. Check out: "The Wild, the Beautiful and the Damned"; "The Frozen Ones" and the gorgeous "Hiroshima Mon Amour" with Foxx. With Ure: "Dancing with Tears in my Eyes" and the exciting instrumental "Astradyne".

Ure is one of the few whose voice is as good now as it ever was. Certainly "Hymn", "Dancing With Tears in my Eyes" and "The Voice" shows off his range superbly and as others have said his Live Aid vocals were incredible without any warm up. Queen may have stolen the show with their set but I still think Ure was on a par that day with the vocals.
