When you look at it, because this came out in 1979, it gives a beach party vibe. Something you'd hear on the beach with everyone dancing on the sand, waves washing up adding to the laid back demeanor of the party. The mighty VH knew how to grab you and show you how to have fun.

Van Halen are known most for their blistering hard rock party tunes but this number right here, exemplifies their ability to write pop-hooks in a hard rock format from all that time they spent playing backyard parties, graduations, weddings, bat mitzvahs, doing so many cover songs, each member having different influences, and those backing vocals, Roth really is an MC for the band while they are backing him up

I really like this song. It reminds me when I met my wife. Back when we were in high school, I heard she had a crush on me, and I never thought anything about it. All I would do is walk past her and say high. Then the night of our high school dance saw I this beautiful girl with her friends. I did not recognize who she was. All I wanted to do was dance with her, so I asked one of her friends who she was with. When she told me who it was my jaw dropped. Her friend said what's wrong; you only say hi to her and as you pass by. All she wanted to do is talk to you. At this point I felt like a complete idiot. I was so caught up in myself. I was so nervous to ask her to dance. When I had enough courage to ask, and she said yes, I was elated. Now 34 years later I still dance with her. She tells me it feels like the first day I asked her to dance. She tells me, LOL I have changed a boy into a man.

VH's first album was to get them on the map. Ed's guitar (especially Eruption) was like nothing anybody ever heard before. He was the architect and the game changer in 1978. Dave sang like someone out of a primeval jungle. And he looked the part as well. A very effective frontman. Michael Anthony on bass and stratospheric backup vocals. The secret weapon he was called. That chime-like guitar coming out of the break is not picking. It's Ed tapping on the fretboard with his right index finger while his left is positioned for a chord. He was all about finding the sounds and tones out of sheer desperation. He could not afford fuzz boxes, wah-wah pedals, phasers or any of the gear most guitarists used at the time. He built his own guitars and engineered them to duplicate any sophisticated sounds other guitarists could afford to buy to enhance their sound. Eddie should also be in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame for his ability to write songs around his complex guitar arrangements. Quite the feat.Listen to Beautiful Girls from the same album as Dance The Night Away, Van Halen II.

If you look at EVERY song you cover that's from the 70's you both have smiles on your faces that join your ears at the back of your head!😜👍👍 And that's exactly what we had growing up in the GREATEST DECADE OF MUSIC- THE 70's 95% of that era of music always had wonderful harmonies. No matter the context of a song it always was graced by wonderful harmonies.... Greatest decade of music=70's

FYI ... this was the first top 20 hit for Van Halen peaked at #15 on the Billboard Top 100. It was also in the year end top 100 at 95. BJ was spot on recognizing it as being radio airplay friendly. Especially during 1979 when anything that drove dancing was huge and this one did that along with the idea of just having a good ol party all night.

David Lee Roth (vocals) loved disco music in the 70's... he wanted Van Halen to be a rock band that people could dance & move to. The harmonies that u hear were Michael Anthony (bass) and Eddie Van Halen (guitar) who had been perfecting that delivery since the mid-70's, when Van Halen were a cover band trying to perform hits at their club shows. Since Roth was not the best singer live, it fell on Michael Anthony to cover vocals to make the band sound good in concert. Van Halen (w/ Roth) also covered the hit 'Dancing in the streets'... and Linda Ronstadt's "You're no good"

Asia, you ain’t wrong with the side eye on some of the lyrics. 😂. But I will say in high school in the 80s this was a good girl’s pump up song, so I have to love it. 😁. “You’re old enough to dance….” I will also say my very good friend and biggest Van Halen fan I knew, when I asked if she was going to try for the MTV Van Halen hidden weekend context, although she adored them, said, “Hell, no.” 🤣. She knew better.
