“Wagakki” is Japanese for “traditional instruments” The “lute” thing is a Shamisen. The “harp” thing is a Koto. The “flute thing” is a shakuhachi. The Japanese drums are collectively called “wadaiko”. The band was founded by the shigin (classical poetry) singer, SUZUHANA Yuko, who is also a classically trained pianist. She developed the concept of fusing Japanese traditional instruments and musical tropes with modern music. Yes, you’ve heard these instruments a million times, in movie soundtracks, when they want to convey a Japanese atmosphere. Here is a video that really lets you see up close all the instruments and how they work together: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2PQloqhjNaWY6s It was originally written for a “Vocaloid” which is an electronic virtual singer-essentially an AI. In Japan (where else?) vocaloids have actually become pop stars. What can I say? America may be the land of innovation for things like tech and social media, but in music no one here cares any more. Most of the creative action has moved to Europe and Japan.

@@coot1925 Please note that comparing Kpop to Jpop is as offensive to some people as telling a Frenchman that your food is as better as English food or telling an Italian that your team is as strong as the German soccer team. So it is better not to say it carelessly. But KPOP specializes in the entertainment value of the artist, while JPOP specializes in the unique and original musicality of the artist, and they have different qualities. So I think they are both good.

"Like hearing for the first time" is not lame, that's a great reaction. For me, hearing Wagakki Band for the first time was like remembering why music had once been important to me. If you listen to more of their work you will shed more tears, and laugh, and want to dance, and feel like you could go out and conquer the world. They can do all that. Above all they will never cease to amaze you with their technical skill, showmanship, and sheer musicality. For the best showcase of their talent (IMHO), try Kyoukasuigetsu +Tsukini sakebuyoru from the REACT tour 2019.

I fully understand your reaction, I had similar feelings the first time I heard this band, and yes, they just draw you in when you watch their live performances, they are such talented musicians and performers. A little info for you. There are 8 members. Yuko Suzuhana, vocals, she is also a Kenbu dancer (fans and swords), and an excellent pianist. She was also responsible for the idea behind the band to bring Japanese instruments and culture to a wider audience, by combining them with rock and other styles of music. Machiya, Guitar. Along with Yuko the main writer and also responsible for the arrangements I believe. Asa, Bass. Wasabi, Drums. Beni Ninagawa, Tsugaru Shamisen (banjo like instrument). Daisuke Kaminaga, Shakuhachi (flute). Kiyoshi Ibukuro, Koto (horizontal harp) and Kurona, Wadaiko (drums). They have certainly become one of my favourite bands, even though they are a long way from my normal tastes, Rock, Metal, Punk etc.

Wagakki is Japanese for “traditional instrument” so Wagakki Band is “Traditional instrument band.” Beside regular rock instruments like lead guitar (Machiya), Bass (Ada) and drums (Wasabi) there is wadaiko, the other drums (Kurona). That’s who we see at the start of Homura and they are joined by shamisen, the banjo-like instrument (Beni). The rest of the band joins in starting with koto (table-like stringed instrument, played by Kiyoshi), Shakuhachi (bamboo flute, played by Daisuke) and, finally, the vocalist, Yuko. Yuko founded what would become Wagakki Band with Kiyoshi and Daisuke. Wasabi, Asa and Machiya joined not long after and, finally, Beni. Yuko is a national award-winning vocalist in shigin, a classic form of poetry narration noted for the wavering vocals and is also a top-level pianist. Beni has won national awards for Shamisen and the others are just as good in their chosen instruments. They got their start making covers of vocaloid songs (songs created on computer using computer-generated ‘singers’) which include Senbonzakura and Yoshiwara Lament; which Ada had produced shortly before joining the band. And have written and performed their own creations afterwards. As you can see, they are astounding as live performers. In 2021, they performed a live concert with a backing orchestra and was joined by Amy Lee of Evanescence for “Bring me to Life) and “Senbonzakura.” Congratulations. You may have just found a musical rabbit hole even deeper than Band-Maid or Baby Metal. Enjoy the ride.

Everyone loves Beni on the Tsugaru Shamisen. The thing she plucks it with is called a Bachi. Kiyoshi plays the Koto. Daisuke plays the Shakuhachi. Kurona plays the Wadaiko drums. Asa on bass. Wasabi on the rock drum kit. Machiya on the guitar. And goddess Yuko always looking gorgeous while singing, dancing, and playing the keyboard/piano. She is multi-talented. Wagakki Band is a world-class supergroup that has no equal.

About Wagakki Band instruments "WA" means Japan. "GAKKI" is an instrument. *WAGAKKI-BAND uses 4 types of WAGAKKI. ---------------- Many Japanese musical instruments have a history of over 1000 years. Despite the passage of time, it can be said that the characteristic of Japanese musical instruments is that the shape of the instrument and the method of playing have not changed much since its birth. This is in contrast to European instruments, which have constantly improved and evolved their instruments. (1) "KOTO" (a large, flat instrument about 6 feet) The ancestors of "KOTO" came to Japan from China about 1300 years ago. The body is made of fine paulownia wood. The wavy grooves engraved on the back of the body make the sound resonate. The strings are made of silk thread. Players attach nails called "KOTOZUME" to their fingertips and pluck the strings. A standard koto has 13 strings. A 17-string koto is also used, but WAGAKKI-BAND's IBUKURO plays the largest 25-string koto. Of course, playing requires the highest level of talent. (2) "Shamisen" (a banjo-like instrument) Generally, the "shamisen" is used as an accompaniment instrument for quiet, light songs. (Current ballads, light pop-like songs) But BENI from WAGAKKI-BAND plays a special shamisen called "Tsugaru Shamisen". "Tsugaru-jamisen" has a faster and more powerful sound and a unique performance style compared to ordinary shamisen. The reason why this style was created is thought to be that TSUGARU-SHAMISEN was born in the extremely cold region of northern Japan. The socially vulnerable (mainly the visually impaired) living in a harsh natural environment earned income by having people listen to their songs and performances, protecting their own lives. They created this striking and unique musical style. The shamisen is played with special claws called BACHI. The three strings are silk threads. Dog skin is used for the shamisen body sheet (cat skin is used for some instruments that require delicate sounds). Synthetic leather is often used today. The reason is that it has good maintenance performance, but it may also be a psychological resistance to using cute dog and cat skins. (3) “Wadaiko” "WA (Japan)" + "TAIKO (drums)" = "WATAIKO". And the pronunciation changes from "WATAIKO" to "WADAIKO". Wadaiko, like Shamisen, has evolved uniquely throughout Japan, and has a variety of shapes and playing methods. There is a band called "Kodo" which is famous as a taiko group in Japan. They tour the world with Japanese taiko performances. If you are interested in WADAIKO, we recommend listening to Kodo performances. There are also many videos uploaded on KZbin. (4) "SHAKUHACHI" (a flute-like bamboo instrument) Until about 60 to 70 years ago, in Japan, units of length called "Shaku" and "Sun" were used. ("sun" sounds like a shortened version of "soon") 1-shaku = 30.3cm (It is a coincidence that it is almost the same as 1feet). 1-sun = 3.03 cm. "Hachi" is the number "8". And the average length of "SHAKUHACHI" was "1-shaku and 8-sun (about 56 cm)", so the "shaku and 8" part became the name of the instrument. The material is cut from the base of bamboo. It is a simple structure that only requires the necessary finger holes after drying the material and removing the distortion. It is not easy to produce complex sounds with a simple instrument. Shakuhachi is said to be one of the most difficult Japanese instruments to master. There is a Japanese word for this. "Kubifuri-3nen Colo-8nen" This Japanese word means... "We control the strength of the sound by precisely moving the head and neck ----> It takes three years of practice." "You have to control your fingers precisely to make a good sound ----> it takes eight years of training." ------------ from Nippon *It is a sentence using Google translation. I hope I conveyed my intentions correctly.

Machiya is the sound engineer who arranges the music and has the final say. They have music in all genres, no two songs are the same. They have around 100 good songs that you can play around with. Wagakii band is an 8 piece band. They are an incredible band and I would recommend "Synchronicity" especially the video of the song, to experience exactly how diverse and how talented they are. They are Japan's super group. Each memeber is also a part of other bands, but come together to perform as Wagakki. They were chosen to do the opening ceremony at the Tokyo olympics, but sadly, covid nixed that. Some day they will be as known outside Japa as they are in their native land.

Here's the traditional "main song" of the Instrument: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3vLnYtsgdCklbs And here's a video of some more modern yet still traditionally rooted playing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5ixkKt_fdZ_i6M The flute that you hear is probably a Shakuhachi which I don't know nearly as much about as with the Shamisen. 6:30 This Harp looking thing is called a Koto which I also don't know a lot about but here's a short song with it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXyZfKOhe71-mq8 I could also hear some sort of taiko drum but I forgot the name of it.. If I remember I'll edit the comment and add that drums name. FInally I want to quickly mention the guitarist. He's called Machiya (artist name) and he's a god. He has a few solo albums which go more into a metal direction with traditional japanese roots + he's in a bunch of other bands too. He's really underrated. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lajdkoeDl9l0qtk I probably left some interesting stuff out but those are just the things that came to my mind rn Edit: This is a really cool song of the guitarists solo album kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2KQoHmEbKagZtE

omg I love Japanese traditional instraments and when Yuko Suzuhana started playing the i think a Kabuki i started feel like tearing up like so much emotion. I myself have a shakuhachi flute but really need to work on my breathing to get all the notes and have it clear in sound. took about an hour to get sound to come out. ugh Her vocals its beautiful, you can feel the emotions in her voice.

Kabuki is a traditional theatre style in Japan, what Yuko does is called Shigin, and it's a poetry reciting style.

WagakkiBand was founded by Yuko Suzuhana, the lead vocalist of the band, who said, "I want to convey Japanese traditional culture to the world in a pop image." Their amazing thing is that they are composed of members who have been active in the front lines of various fields since before the band was formed, and they do not stick to the genre of music. There is one caveat. WGB ended its exclusive contract with Avex in June 2019 and signed a global contract with Universal Music. Please note that after that, music videos other than live footage owned by Avex will be blocked if used as is.

Just FYI if no one has posted, the big flat horizontal harp is a "koto", the big wall-mounted drums the one drummer plays are called "taiko", the flute the man plays is called a "shakuhachi", and the "banjo-looking" thing is called a "shamisen". You can see more videos with the instruments by searching those words.

There is a HUGE amount of Wagakki Band music out there from the beginning of the group right up until today that is just indescribable. Yuko Suzuhana also does some one-off songs on her own and you should check out "Cradle Of Eternity", where she collabarates with the Kami Band in an amazing performance.

Wagaki Band is a bunch of Traditionally Trained Musicians, and a Traditionally trained singer, who decided to go Rock Band. They play the Shamisen (the "Banjo like" Instrument played with the "Fan"), the Koto (hard to explain, is a LONG stringed instrument that you sit in front of), the Shakuhachi (A wooden Flute like instrument), Taiko/Wadaiko Drums, and Kane (Translated "Kane" literally means "Gong", and the Taiko Drummer has one at his station)

A suggested WGB playlist to go down: Their live performances are usually best. Their biggest hit. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpvalmyNrrRrh9U A nice change of styles that shows off pure mastery. kzbin.info/www/bejne/boSxh2upbat9eM0 My favorite production video - ballad story song. (you can turn on the English subtitles) kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6C8ZplvbJ6Jqq8 A live collaboration with someone we all know and love featuring a symphony orchestra. This guy's channel has a lot of good stuff. My favorite song of their's kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2G0g4OJj6mtqaM Yuko has one of the best voices in Japan. She sings in Shigin( an old type of poetry) style for Wagakki. Just a little here. She's in a separate group with 2 other members of Wagakki called Hanafugetsu. I listen to them more but they are easy listening. This predates Wagakki and is still together. She sings in a more contemporary style. Here is a song of their's from Yuko's official channel kzbin.info/www/bejne/npWTqHSDnaZ-pMU Here is Beni's channel. On this at 5:30 She slaps the shamisenkzbin.info/www/bejne/mpPVkpaqgtJ6aac
