there's a great backstory to this. Warren & a friend went on a trip to Hawaii & met up with a young lady who offered to take them back to a friend's place to hang out. on the way she mentioned the friend might not actually be there & they might have to break into the place. Warren & his buddy started imagining the letter Warren would have to write. "Dear Dad. Send lawyers." "& guns" the friend added. "& money" Warren finished. & so a hit song was born.

I think his version "Back on the High Life" tells a better story too. It's just his voice, because Steve Winwood doesn't sound like anything has been wrong. Warren sounded like life has been ROUGH. Getting back in the high life is more aspirational and not certain.

Warren Zevon is a freakin' legend. He hired Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks as band members on his first album (Pre Fleetwood Mac) I don't know if you reacted to this, but Warren wrote and performed a song that was later done by Linda Ronstadt called "Poor Poor Pitiful Me". Warren isn't a humorous songwriter, more like a wry sense of humor sneaks in. "Jeannie Needs A Shooter", "Boom Boom Mancini" (A great story song, and a true story at that), "Excitable Boy" (From the same album as "Werewolves of London" and "Lawyers, Guns and Money"), "Seminole Bingo", "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" .... .... .... There is so much to choose from.

Warren Zevon (Zee-Vahn) was absolutely incredible and lived life to the fullest before passing away from cancer. One of the incredible thing is David Letterman (THE show back in the day) was a huge fan and devoted a huge block of time for Warren's last appearance. It was one of the most heartfelt tv moments of all-time. Warren got through his music with some incredibly poignant songs (that he wrote when he knew he was going for good.) One of Warren's great early songs is "I'LL SLEEP WHEN I'M DEAD" and he lived life like that. REST IN PEACE, MR. ZEVON. The world is a better place with you having been in it.

Zevon's songs all seem to range from wickedly cynical to forlorn, but they're not all like that. One of his best songs is "Frank and Jesse James". I think it's not as well known as it should be because it feels more country than rock, recorded at a time when country and rock did not cross over commercially very much. But it's a great song. Some of his songs are quite funny -- like "Poor, Poor, Pitiful Me", which was also done by and became a hit for Linda Ronstadt. Then there's a song like "Boom Boom Mancini", which is about the great boxer from the 80s. Great tune. He didn't have a lot of hits but he was a songwriter's songwriter and a musician's musician -- covered and admired by everyone from Bob Dylan to Jackson Browne.

If you're asking if Warren Zevon wrote novelty songs - absolutely not, but many of his songs can be amusing because they can be quite ironic or point out some of life's absurdities. His music can also be so, so much more. He was classically trained pianist and a brilliant lyricist. He had his demons, which probably prevented him from getting the air play and commercial success he deserved. Personally, I think it's a tragedy that "Werewolves of London" is the only Warren Zevon song many people can name. Listen to "Desperados Under the Eaves" next. It's a beautiful song and will show you a side of him you haven't explored yet.

David Letterman called Warren Zevon (ZEE-von), L.A.'s hardest rocking musician. Warren got the inspiration for this from some incident he had with the "Hawaiian Mafia" on Maui, but never gave details to the public. His father was actually a real life mobster, William 'Stumpy' Zevon - Mickey Cohen's righthand man. Hank Williams, Jr. did a cover of this. Warren wrote and originally performed POOR POOR PITIFUL ME, which Linda Ronstadt made a hit. Maybe react to Warren's recording, and then Linda's cover of that. It paints a lurid picture from both gender perspectives.

RIP Warren. I miss him souch. This was, is and always will be my favorite Warren Zevon song. His final interview with Letteman was so special and poignant.
