This song is so iconic. And imo is completely own by Tarja. The song is so epic, and about fantasy and with her operatic voice is just perfection. I love Emppu's solo and then the drum part 10:56

Earlier Nightwish music, especially the Oceanborn and Wishmaster albums were more guitar/riff driven (newer stuff is more keys/orchestra driven) so as a guitarist I think you will enjoy that early era stuff a lot.

The song, title track to the 3rd album, is about a love of fantasy stories, including references to Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and Dragonlance series. I knew you'd catch The Trooper intro. lol. No, they didn't play that entire song. Slaying the Dreamer was the next song in the set. Yes ,that's Marko, he joined 2001. The End of an Era DVD was recorded in Helsinki Oct 21,2005. If you think they look young here , check out their cover of Howard Blake's Walking in the Air from the 'From Wishes to Eternity' DVD in 2000. That will also have original bassist Sami Vanska.

Love this song and video. At 10:12, when you paused on Emppu...he looks about 12!!!! To think, these fans going nuts and the band playing their hearts out.....that probably within 2-3 hours, they would have handed the infamous letter over the Tarja! Tragic....but, its all history now and without it we wouldn't have seen Nightwish evolve with Annette and now with Floor. Great reaction as always!

@@massivemetalreactions lol, there's a long history of fans-mis-hearing-lyrics. This song gets a lot of attention, usually becuse us English-native-speakers cant understand any foreign accent... and here we have English sung by a Finn who received some of her opera-training in the German tradition (influences pronunciation and vowel-choice, etc). The masses are asses - - said T. Jefferson, constantly.

Tarja was co founder in 96 with Emppu and Tuomas. This was October 21, 2005. Helsinki Finland. Marko replaced Sämi in 2001. Marko 1st heard on Century Child 4th album 2002 This was Tarja's last night with the band. This is the final date of ONCE upon a tour. There is much drama involved. She was still contracted for another album and tour. They mended fences. Tarja and Marko during a christmas concert in 2017. The others more recently. Now Floor and Tarja have been friends since 2002. Floor's band After Forever opened for NW in Europe. Floor went to Tarja for her blessing to join She got it. In 2013 Floor was Tarja's guest where she callednfor love only towards Floor. No reason for Tarja to be.upset. it was Anette she replaced . The dvd came out Aug 2006. In 2006 Tarja put out her planned solo Christmas album. Ps: keltic is how you say it.

Even though, my favourite singer is Floor, I still enjoy Tarja. I was introduced to Nightwish with Tarja and I saw her live back then and she is incredible. Nightwish with Tarja give me nostalgic feelings. But for me Floor will be always my preference. She is the only one who can sing songs written for Tarja and Anette and make them her own. The most versatile singer ever. But still, Nightwish is Nightwish, no matter who is the singer.

Yes, that's Marko. The biggest complaint about "End of an Era" is the cinematography. The random, unnecessary slow motion, the weird zooms, the cameras shooting the wrong thing at the wrong time, and rapid zooms in and out. Most of the DVD is good, but damn, it can get annoying at times. We play the CD more than the DVD (was it ever released on Blu-ray?).

I love Tuomas effectively providing what would normally be the harmony guitar part alongside Emmpu @10:44. Of course, unlike Iron Maiden and most metal bands which have two or three guitarists, Emmpu for most of Nightwish's existence, has magically managed to cover both rhythm AND solo guitar roles simultaneously.

Discovered them in 1998 when I bought their debut "Angels Fall First" and immediately loved them. IMO, "Wishmaster" is one of the best songs on their third album, but I hope you eventually will also be checking out songs from their second album "Oceanborn", which is still my overall favourite and also - by far - most-played album by them. I love the virtuosity on that album and especially Tarja's vocal performance. I'd also say that the song structures are overall more complex than on "Wishmaster". Here's a video of a TV-performance of "Gethsemane" from 1999 (when they were all very young and Marco hadn't joined them yet): kzbin.info/www/bejne/favQl4Swe9N3iLc And here's the official video of "Sacrament of Wilderness" (from the same year): kzbin.info/www/bejne/apjMhJV5bqeEgtU On another note: I fully second the suggestion in some of the other comments to check out the "Misheard Lyrics"-version of "Wishmaster"! Absolutely hilarious!

I always thought Emppu might have a Whammy stowed away behind that monitor he uses as a knee prop in this song. If not, then the guy is the King of hand-wrought harmonics... that bit you manually repeated sounds like some momentary-filter as well as harmonics.... to me. (btw, I dont think the NWA will claim me as one of their own. I only bumped into them at the start of the shutdown. I used to play guitar a lot, but them family and 'real work' got in the way.... and a second round of higher-ed, blahblahblah But I can talk a long/wide streak about the technology in guitars/pedals/amps... former EE, amongst other things.)

Randall, The Nightwish Army absolutely claims you! We need you to explain all the cool tech to gear nerds like me, who loves what I hear but can't always work out how the sound is created! NA is also a state of mind, in my experience...if you *feel* the music, the lyrics...well, At Ease, Soldier!
@randalljones43702 жыл бұрын
@@amygoodson-catlady Pick out an interesting sound in one of the videos, and I will see if I can give an accurate description. Lately I've been listening to Emppu's solo on Romanticide... there's an ascending run that sounds like he applied an envelope/comparator-driven filter that snaps open/shut in under a tenth of a second and gives each triplet a bubble-like 'wow' It's just there for a part of the solo, but the sound has always intrigued me.
@amygoodson-catlady2 жыл бұрын
@@randalljones4370 And would that be achieved with a pedal, or switch? I dont.play an instrument, but I *hear* music like a musician...I'll give that a closer listen. There's a reactor on Stratelli Studios (I prolly spelled wrong) who posted a 2 part breakdown of Emppu's playing on Romanticide, but I don't think he picked up what you're talking about. Emppu's guitar sound is unique to me...I know it's his tuning and use of different gauged strings...but also the tapping and whammy use. I love how he bends and slides notes. I'm actually fascinated by the guitar sounds at the beginning of Elvenjig and Elvenpath... can you tell me anything about that? Thanks for geeking out w me!
@randalljones43702 жыл бұрын
@@amygoodson-catlady The 'filter-like' sound I'm talking about happens fairly early in the solo, and can be heard on that ascending run. There's a near-instantaneous 'wuh' at the beginning of each note which is characteristic of opening a filter which sweeps the each note individually., then re-triggers on the next note's attack. I'm listening to Stratele's commentary right now..... So far I haven't heard when he talks about the whammy...Do you know if he is referring to Emppu's use of the Tremolo bar (aka "whammy bar", altho it is a pitch-modifier, not an amplitude modifier as with true tremolo...but I digress) OR if he is claiming that Emppu is using a Whammy pedal (by Digitech) to alter pitch and harmonics? I'm pretty sure Emppu used pinch-harmonics and the Trem-bar for the pitch-dive. Huh. I just finnished (pun intended) Stratele's Part 2 and I didn't hear anything about the solo. And I did a YT -search for Part 3 but came up empty handed. I''ll do some more listening later. Right now, it's an 80 degree day and I have a couple outdoor projects that need attention. AAAAND, listening to that solo for the 400th time (probably accurate) I'm hearing it a little different.... basically I'm treating this like I was trying to do a PhD Verbal Thesis Defense, and the entire Nightwish Army is staring me down: so anyway, in the latter portion of the rise of the initial run-up, there is a VERY prominent note which, anytime if is played it some more fuller than the others...Either the amp-model (unlikely) or PA (unlikely) has an overbearing resonant harmonic ORR, there's something like a compressor/parametric-EQ that is emohasizing a narow frequency range (I have an old Akai Hexacomp that can do this)... it makes it sound like an auto-wah is being played. Hopefully, this kinda/sorta makes sense. If not, I apologize in advance.
@amygoodson-catlady2 жыл бұрын
@@randalljones4370 ah, Randall that was cool as hell! Your ear is trained to recognize sounds not natural to a plain guitar tone. I think Jeff at Statele was just talking tremolo bar...your knowledge of extra gear seems beyond his. He never posted a part 3...but he answers all.of his comments, I'm sure he'd love to hear from you. And we're just focused on one solo in one song! The only place I've seen any gear set ups for Nightwish is in a portion of the making of Endless Forms Most Beautiful documentary...near the end...I know someone has it segmented out on KZbin. Natemares channel reacted to it. I wouldn't have recognized any gizmos you name tho. You remember during lockdown when the Nightwish tour crew made covers of their songs and sold an EP under the name Crewish? I would hunt them down and find out if the guitar tech could answer some questions! Worth a shot! I hope you keep me posted on your research...I'm riveted!

His list is very 'Floor heavy' though, so people will need to go off list if they want to check out more Tarja era stuff or Annette. Floor is fantastic of course, so it's understandable, but I find it a little bit of a shame that most new fans or reactors don't realise that the original album versions of Ghost Love Score, Ever Dream, Dark Chest Of Wonders, Sleeping Sun, Nemo etc are all Tarja sung and tracks like Storytime, Poet And The Pendulum, 7 Days To The Wolves, Ghost River, The Last Ride etc were all Anette sung.
