Nice to see you follow Simple Russian Girl in visiting the Moscow Zoo! Katyusha is a famous Russian romantic song and the name itself is a diminutive of Ekaterina. Usually, pandas are given a Chinese name but the break from tradition was welcome. Lots of animals to see there and it wasn’t possible to cover everything in a twenty minute video. Hopefully, people will see the rest for themselves when they visit Moscow. 😊

Well, it was not a complete 'break' from tradition so to speak ;) People were choosing from names that would be connected and sweet to both Russian and Chinese people at the same time. Russian song Katyusha is well known and appreciated in China, and for us it's a very sweet diminutive form of a Russian name that therefore seem quite fitting for such cute sweet panda baby. So that's what majority of people choose, so that it would sound sweet and warm for us both 😊 And I really appreciate that Chinese people let us pick out of names that incorporate our culture indicative of where the baby panda was born 🤗

И как правильно вы упомянули в видео, часто там находятся животные после различных проблем со здоровьем, которых не всегда можно вернуть в естественные места обитания. As a school kid i used to have a summer holiday job at our city zoo, and we had a song to sing on the way home on the bus. "We're all going to the zoo tomorrow" ... with ever decreasing enthusiasm. More recently we even had some pandas but unfortunately, unlike the book, they just ate shoots and left.

Hello Lisa, your videos are entertaining thank you. I watched Oleg Zubkov visiting Moscow Zoo recently and commenting about what animals are very difficult to contain in a zoo for different reasons. Polar bear was one of them, because its den have to be refrigerated around zero degrees which is very expensive in summer, like millions of dollars for electricity bill.

I think that non-local animals are getting used to the climate a little, but they need a habitat, a lot of southern animals need to be kept in warm enclosures all winter

@@lisa_with_love To me it seems that for example polar bear living in warmer conditions loses its weight and becomes slimer version of itself because do not need such fats to protect from cold. Lions for example living in cold winter conditions gain fat and have to eat more. They also change and look even better, more massive and with thicker hair.

Zoos can be great especially as mini habitats in dis/connected corridors that draw exotic local species nearer city centers. If they can be helped to (not) opt for captivating comforts we can avoid romanticizing that they’re always better off in the wild.

Thanks for an interesting video as per usual! Have not been in any Zoo since a childhood. My acquaintance used to live aside of that Zoo back the days...It was absolutely awful because of an odor and the sings of the animals round the clock. BTW, Moscow zoo lately celebrated 160 year anniversary.🙂👍

Lisa In 2020, the first mating took place between the two pandas that have been staying at Ouwehands Zoo in the Netherlands since 2017. In May 2020, the first panda cub, Fan Xing, was born, a female that was transported to China in September 2023. A panda cub goes its own way in the wild around the age of two. This year, another panda was born at Ouwehands Zoo. Actually twins, but one has died

2:45 fun fact long time ago moscow zoo stopped cut wings of it's shelducks... they fly all over the city and since then they slowly displaced the indigenous species (mallards) now you can see them all over the city

Well, after 5 years for living and studying in Russia, I have left my traces on cites like Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Nizhnhy Novgorod, Volgograd, Vyborg, Sochi, Kislovodsk, Kaliningrad... Ой, я точно скучаю по России 😢
