I've never heard an Elvis song before where Elvis speaks throughout and only sings on the last line! He was such a great performer, such an emotional speaking voice. Isn't it great that he was always keen to showcase his backing singers, giving them time to shine. He was never jealous of their talent and was happy to share his spotlight with them.

We ALL wanted to be there. We still do. Imagine if Elvis was alive and still performing??? Name one stadium that he could not fill. There is not a stadium in the world that could hold all of the people that still want to see this man. He’s long gone, but never forgotten. They’ll be listening to him 2000+ years from now teaching about him in schools like they teach about Bach.

This one gets to me, because just before my husband died, I crawled into bed with him and held him. I told him it was okay to go. I told him I Love you, with his last breath he said I love you. Then he passed on. I had been up with him for 2 days and nights watching him struggle for breath. He died at home like I promised him. The oxegon machine kept his organs going and our 6 children and 3 grands all came to say their goodbyes. I didn't tell them he was already gone. They thought he just was in a coma. My son was hysterical when he came in as I was turning off the oxygen machine and asked what I was doing. I told him daddy's gone. Hospice was on their way to get him. They knew he was gone that morning, but knew the family needed that closure. I will always be grateful for their kindness. We are a big family and he was the center of our world, and it's never been the same! Every weekend our house was full of kids and grandkids and laughter. Now, it's a shell and too quiet.

What's impressive its not about elvis there's no ego it's about the song . Shirell Neilston is the other signer

Ray my friend, this might be a little story that you could like, but perhaps you don't like for this to happen ;) Ray is sitting and making a reaction to an Elvis song, he is completely absorbed by the song. Suddenly he hears a woman's voice that he recognizes saying: I met him once when I was little, Ray looks around, but he doesn't see anyone. He continues listening to the song, but can't really concentrate, then he hears a man's voice he recognizes saying: He was a good friend of mine, I really appreciate your tribute to my mothers friend, you know that my mother sang with him for years. Ray looks around a little annoyed, he asks his helper to stop messing with him, because he doesn't see anyone else there. Then he starts the video again, he starts listening again, everything is fine and he can focus a little more again, but suddenly it happens again, although now he hears a man's voice that he definitely recognizes saying: Thank you for honoring my life's work and for having such a wonderful sense of humor, you make people happy and proud of both me and the honor of listening to you Ray, he feels a hand that touches his. Ray gets up and shakes the mans hand, but he don't see his face, he feels his hand and hears his voice, but don't see his face and all of a sudden he is gone, so Ray looks around, he looks at his aide to his right and suddenly Ray realizes that the voices weren't coming from there, they were coming from the left side. He sits down and shakes his head, intending to try to play the video to the end, although shaken up, he starts the video, but can't let go of the voices completely. Ray thinks: my mind going back and forth, I know who it was, I do know that, but I cant place him and now he is gone, I recognize both the first and second voices, I know for sure who the third was, but it can't be like that, can it? Nah stop now Ray, you're probably just tired, or stressed, the video is running, but Ray mumbles his thoughts out loud, not silently to himself as he thinks. The female voice and the first male voice simultaneously say: Now wake up Ray, we want to meet you, you're one of our heroes, although you should be reacting to our songs too, not just his. The third voice then says: Ray is a hero to me for sure, but I think he loves you guys just as much, the only thing is… the voice trails off and Ray looks around annoyed, wondering what's going on. Then he hears a knock and jumps, he runs to the door and opens it, he is annoyed and yawns loudly: What the hell... he sees who knocked and just stands there silently and stares. There is a limousine there with an open door, the person half-half shoves Ray into the limousine and sits down and drives, Ray sits and just shakes his head. I must be dreaming, he tells himself, this isn't happening, it isn't happening, I must be dreaming. Suddenly the car stops and the door opens, they are outside the Arcade restaurant in Memphis, but the driver is gone. Ray walks in and a waitress takes him to a table, there are people sitting in the dark, no lights are on right there. He stands at the only free chair, there are four people sitting there, but he doesn't see who they are, Ray is very excited, what is this joke he thinks. One of the employees there suddenly turns on the light and Ray staggers and looks around in a daze, he sees that the place is empty, but wait he's facing the wrong way, so he slowly turns around. When he turns a little more towards the table, he sees a beautiful woman he recognizes saying hello Ray, Ray stammers out a hello Miss Whitney Houston. He continues the movement towards the table as if in slow motion, he undoubtedly recognizes the man sitting there and stammers out a hello and the man says hello and smiles at James Brown. Now he is almost completely facing the table and sees who the driver was and yes it is him, his one Rays biggest superhero saying hi Ray and smiling broadly towards him. Ray stops in his tracks, what's going on, he rubs his eyes, can it be true, yes it is because he sees Whitney Houston sitting on the first chair, on the second are Mr. King of Soul James Brown. He begins to twist some more and the reason Ray suddenly comes to a complete stop, it's obvious to anyone who knows Ray, the driver is very much alive person called Eminem, Ray stares at all three as if hypnotized. All three of them smile at him and say that they were hoping he would want to meet them and maybe jam a little with them. Ray doesn't know where to look anymore, but then his mind finally can focus, even if he is very confused, is he awake, is he dreaming... Then he hears the voice that he recognized at first, he is coming towards him with a tray with sandwiches, they are fried peanuts and banana sandwiches, then Ray understand who he is and Ray just stares at him, it's the Master of music Mr Elvis Presley. The man standing in front of him shaking his hand is a young Elvis Presley, Ray is about to fall over, but both Elvis and Eminem hold him up. They manage to get Ray to sit down and they talk for probably an hour before Elvis says: Ray did you want to jam with us, Ray stammers out a yes and suddenly they are in a studio singing a few different songs together. They go through a couple of Whitney's songs, they play some of James' songs and then some of Eminem's, they finish with some of Elvis' songs. Several hours have passed since they met and they decide to do this again, but only as long as Ray continues his positive reaction way, he just has to play anyone of the singers' songs. Eminem drives Ray home and talks a couple of minutes with his family and then drives away, Ray cant stop to smile for several day, he knows that it really happened and that he is going to be able to jam with them again soon..

When God created my friend Elvis he was just showing off. I can't tell you how much i love and miss him, there is not a day that goes by that i don't think of him and all the memories we made in 10 short years, his death knocked the wind out of me i have never been the same since, Elvis was the big brother i never had. He is also my guardian angel. Graceland is my go to place when it get's to hard to live w/o my friend i go there and walk around and remember Elvis and all the beautiful times we had together. He was the only person in my life that understood me and cared about my feelings and opinions. What it comes down to is we both needed a true friend and we were that for each other. Awesome reaction Ray God bless you and your family from the one and only Memphis Tn.

I don't know what to say. Honestly, this was a very beautiful reaction Ray, very beautiful 🌻💖 You just don't listen to the music, you let it enter your soul. You got soul, Ray. Sherrill "Shaun" Neilson was the tenor voice you heard singing. He was the original tenor of The Imperials. Before then, he was a member of one of Elvis's favorite Gospel groups, The Statesmen Quartet (back in the 1950's). He also sang with other gospel groups, such as The Songfellows and The Speer Family and the Master V. The Imperials first sang with Elvis in the studio in 1966 for his second Gospel album "How Great Thou Art"- which is a BEAUTIFUL album. So many songs on there made me cry and I am not a cryer and I do not consider myself a religious person. But Elvis singing Gospel is different. Anyway, Elvis had tremendous respect for all those that worked with him, and that went too for Sherrill "Shaun" Neilson, whom Elvis called "The Voice". Sherrill had his first name legally changed to Shaun later on in his life and career. He has his own music catalogue too, his first solo record having been released in 1965 (I think). Sherrill "Shaun" Neilson, aka The Voice, died of cancer in December of 2010. And Elvis was right, this song is old (though not as old as all that when he performed this song) it was actually originally an Italian song composed by Tony De Vita and the lyrics written by Giorgio Calabrese in 1950. Hal Shaper heard the song and decided to put English lyrics to it in 1962. The original Italian version was/ is simply titled "Softly". Now here is the interesting part: The story that Elvis told in the beginning was of doubtful authenticity. According to Wikipedia, and mind you while it is a good jumping off point for further research, it is not always the most reliable for information: "However some Presley insiders claim that his explanation for the song was merely an example for Presley's flair for storytelling, so his explanation is most likely apocryphal. Presley said he heard the story from "some people in Florida"." Whether Elvis first heard the prefacing story from some others first and decided to include it in his performance for this song or whether Elvis came up with this story himself, I don't know. I say that because in my research I have found Elvis would sometimes pass off credit to someone else for some element or idea he implemented on a recording or in a song during a live performance. He just let Steve Scholes for instance take the credit for producing some of his 1950's stuff once he signed onto RCA. But as those who were actually there in the studio said, "Steve Sholes had never worked with a Rock 'n' Roll singer. He had never produced a Rock 'n' Roll record." DJ Fontana, Elvis's drummer at that time said in an interview, "The producers on those recordings were just clockwatchers. Elvis knew what he wanted and while he didn't always know how to get it out, he always managed to get it out and communicate it to us." Fun Fact: "Heartbreak Hotel" wasn't actually recorded in the studio. The echo effect you hear on the original 1956 recording was because Elvis had the idea of recording the song in the hallway outside of the studio room to reproduce that echo effect that Sam Phillips and Sun Records were so known for. That was all Elvis. Steve Sholes did do some production. Like on "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You". But that is a story in and of itself and I don't want to make this too long. I am so sorry this another long comment 🌷💜 Eek! THANK YOU SO MUCH MISS CATHERINE & THANK YOU RAY FOR THIS MOST BEAUTIFUL REACTION 💜🌹💙💐💜🌹💙💐💜🌹💙💐 TCB ⚡ & TLC ❤ & peace ✌& blessings 🙏 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕 Edit: Elvis performed this song as you heard it here on December 13, 1975 during the Midnight Show at The Las Vegas Hilton. It had been on a private cassette recording for 5 years until RCA released it in March of 1978, several months after Elvis's death. It was released on the B- side of "Unchained Melody" originally in March 1978.

Thank you Ray, a very emotional song which will affect anyone who has lost or has someone they can’t bear to be gone. My mummy went to work happy and healthy and never came home. She became unwell and passed away at her desk. My daddy got there just before she passed, held her hand and talked to her, begging her to stay. I often wonder could she hear him and what would she have said to him if she could answer him. This song says everything and I like to think she wouldve been trying to comfort him with words similar to these lyrics. Rest in eternal peace mummy.❤️

Wow…just wow. I’ve never heard this before. I immediately began to cry as this took me back 12 years ago to the day I lost my husband. He was 54 years young when he suffered and died from cancer. We spent his last 3 days in the hospital, the last 24 hours in a hospice house. He was in so much pain as we arrived by ambulance to the hospice house. I was so ready for him to be free of pain from the cancer in his brain. The nurse administered the pain med and for the first time in 3 days he was finally and completely free of pain. In the moment this took place, I had not considered that I would never hear him laugh again. I would never see his beautiful blue eyes again. I would never hear him say ‘I love you’ again…and he told me this every day of our lives together. Knowing Kyle, my husband, he would have written these very words to me if he could have. He always tried to spare my suffering during his illness. He was such a wonderful man. I still miss him so much!!! I thank God for you being the catalyst that brought this story to me. Ray, I know you accept the memorabilia that your fans send to you with an open heart. They are passing the baton to you so that younger generations can continue to hear Elvis and appreciate his beauty. That’s all they want in return for sharing their hearts with you. @@susyq810 I don't mind in the least that you sent it to Ray, Miss Susy Q 🌻😊 I get what you mean about forgetting to breathe when Elvis sings a song a certain way. No lie, when Elvis sings the word "signed" the way he does in "Love Letters" I too forget to breathe, and scrunch my face up, and clutch my throat and shake my head like, "Whhooooppphhh!" The feels, dear Lord, the FEELS. How he did that, I don't know. I think maybe Elvis had a kind of musical intuition. He was just able to tap into this thing inside of him that most don't even know they have. Anyway, you're sincerely welcome Miss Susy Q 💖💐💕

Elvis always captivated his audience, or the people who was around him for any reason! Elvis had that special gift that people loved so much, he truly loved everyone, he always gave back whatever he could because that's who he was, if you we're in need, he took care of it with no questions asked! The sad part about it is that some took advantage of his kindness and took if for weakness! Shame on them, I can only hope they have paid for the greed they kept in their heart!

This sounds like when my Dad passed here at home with all of us around him. We each had alone time with him before he went. I told him that my daughter was coming and he hung on until she got here. After she came out of the room we all gathered in the room and outside the door while he passed away while Mom held his hand while laying beside him in one side and my son holding his hand on the other side. That was only the 3rd time in his life I had ever seen my son break down in tears. Now I'm really going to cry when I hear this song again.

Elvis wasn’t the one singing, he was only talking the versus’s of the song. He only sung towards the end.

The singer that could touch your very soul. This was a showstopper during Elvis engagements in Vegas, a highlight of his shows. Seeing Elvis live must have been an extremely emotional experience, so jealous of the ones that got to witness this incredible performer in person. Elvis never hurt a soul, only himself.

Elvis doesn't actually sing this song; he speaks the words while his backing tenor Sherrill Nielsen sings it. EP's one recorded version of this song was a bootleg made by a fan at the Las Vegas Hilton show on December 13, 1975. RCA was later able to release it commercially in March 1978, and it now appears on the boxed set of "Walk A Mile In My Shoes:The Essential 70's Masters."
