Since you're already appreciating his message and overall talent, I suggest you do follow the listening order so when you get to Hope, you'll appreciate it all even more than just doing that one early.

Over the years, he has built up many recurring themes, images and linguistic tools that he revisits in later work, especially Hope. Seeing and hearing these build adds depth to the more current songs.

Hey Beth long time sub of yours, cool to see you do something a little "out of the box"! I've listened to NF for years and I highly recommend to watch all of his material in order. He uses a ton of repeating metaphors and visuals. It's really quite the experience. I think most recommend starting with the song "Mansion" which is a fantastic song.
@TlcroslinАй бұрын
4:59 he says leaving my burdens, well I brought a few with me. And points to the balloons. Such a good metaphor because we know burdens weigh you down. So the shopping cart or trolley seems empty but not quite.

You hit the nail on the head with the shopping cart metaphor, he basically logs it around with the black balloons, which to him are his burdens, so he has to take them everywhere he goes! I think this was one of the best breakdown reactions I’ve seen. Great work! Look forward to seeing more from NF possibly!

"The balloons are holding him back." ...so true! his burdens are holding him back. I'd never been into rap before NF, and only NF. I've never been a big fan of rap, but NF really hits different. He's so raw with his self expression, and he raps about difficult subjects instead of meaningless hedonism. Remember This is my favorite of his songs (at least right now). So cool to see you cover him!

i really appreciated that blurb about Tommee Profitt.. i don't think he gets enough flowers for how much he's done for Nate. He has his own YT Channel and has often left comments on random reactions to Nate's music that he did the music for and leaves the kindest words. then his own behind-the-scenes short videos on how he does the music are so fun to watch also.. and always ending his cocktail of all the musical instruments with saying "then the last magic ingredient, Nate".. he's a wonderful man who, in many ways, i think had a major hand in who Nate is today, almost like a proud father/family member, who saw the potential in Nate and never left his side whenever needed. We need more #TommeeProfitt 's in this world. #NFRealMusic

You can tell he's been there, drops casually and in an off hand manner what makes other people go 'WTF' and scream 'too much information' because our social filters on what is OK to talk about are shot to buggery. They tell us to talk about it, then when we do, recoil in horror saying "not like that".

the black balloons symbolize his 'burdens' he carries around. At 4:57 he says ''...leaving my burdens, well i brought a few with me i´m not perfect'' as he points to the ballons. i think in Lost ft. Hopsin he adresses them too

Here we go, people! Wait until Beth sees the literary techniques and metaphors that NF spent three full albums building for us from the ground up and then used to bring us into his mind (mansion) for a therapy session. Also, his technique got so much better from the first to the latest. You could tell he was in the lab before he wrote a love song to his notebook, but that solidified it.

Hey @BethRoars, I can't begin to say how excited I was to see you cover NF. I'm not a rap/hip hop fan but I've been fascinated with his work. I know of many others who would say the same. One thing that I so appreciate about your videos is the time that you take to research the artist and provide insight beyond just your opinion or a hot take. Thank you for that. One element of NF that I believe is highly underrated is the fact that he actually has a solid singing voice. I would love to see your reaction to NF's Running. I'm always blown away by his ability to bring out emotion through how he delivers his vocals and that's very much the case in Running. At the end of the day his skill is in the rap/hip hop world, but Running features his voice. I'm curious what insights you have coming from a vocal coach background.

I've been a Nate fan since nearly the beginning. I was playing Madden online, and his song Intro came on the loading screen. To which I immediately quit the game, took the loss, and showed it to my roommate. Him and I listened to the album for about 3 hours and hung out admiring it.

I totally agree about the therapeutic power of music. Writing lyrics is my form of journaling and I hope that my work can help others in the same way. Music has always been a big source of solace for me and I want to pay that forward as much as I can. Incidentally, I was today years old when I found out that slapping is a thing on string instruments other than bass and guitar.

One thing to note about the video, black balloons were used to hold heroin for sale. It's where the Goo Goo Dolls song 'black balloon' comes from, so I think their inclusion in the video given the background is so subtle and so clever. Also, I'm an Icelander so I have to give bonus points for his choice of setting!

You need to react to his song Leave Me Alone. The video is a continuation of this one. The cart is a portable cage he can crawl into to feel safe. His song Outcast is where the concept starts. The black Ballons are his burdens he holds onto afraid to let them go. He talks about his fear of letting go of fear and his burdens, and being afraid things would be worse if he did. The people in the white represent his fans who also struggle with depression and fear. The ones in white clothes, like you mentioned, have chosen to try and let go to heal.

@BethRoars This is one of my favourite NF tracks for sure. Suggest Mansion next ! If you've discovered NF I'm surprised you haven't also discovered and reacted to Welsh boy Ren yet. Probably the most diversely talented artist of our generation. Lyme disease sufferer who spent 8 years misdiagnosed and untreated before crawling into treatment after a private diagnosis in Belgium. He performs almost every genre. Incredibly well. Surprising you musically at every turn. From busking on the streets of Brighton, his Hip Hop-heavy album Sick Boi entered the UK album charts at No. 1 in October 2023 knocking Rick Astley off the top spot. 100% independently with no tours or promotion other than through his fanbase - whilst he was in treatment in Canada. His 'best known' piece is Hi Ren. If you haven't watched this yet - do, whether you react to it or not. It's a single take.

Music is always such a powerful controller over emotions. Watch a movie segment with only the actors...then watch with the over-score. Think Chariots of Fire. This young man is really talented. Too bad his themes are based on the worst of society and the tragedies in his life. Iceland looks soo dark but it is a very happy, peaceful country...community matters. Thanks for this one, Beth..newbie for me. 😊
