Through The Never is not a documentary. It's a movie. A young roadie for the band is sent to retrieve something for them during a concert, but society outside is crumbling. There is concert footing mixed with this kids journey.

There is a theory that, in 'Through The Never', Metallica is talking about 'The Nothing', which is the great evil in the book and movie 'Never Ending Story'. That's an AWESOME movie from the 1980's and had some really deep, thought-provoking stuff going on. :)

If you liked the Some Kind of Monster documentary I highly recommend A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica. It is a massive documentary that follows Metallica during the making of The Black Album and the first leg of the massive Black Album tour. It covers some major events like the Monsters of Rock in Moscow, the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert where James performed the Queen song Stone Cold Crazy with Queen and Tony Iommi, and the ill fated Guns n Roses your where James Hetfield got set on fire from the pyro cannons

I will usually skip "Nothing Else Matters". Not because it's a bad song or I don't like it. I just heard it WAY TOO MUCH back in the day. Fans who were "just discovering" Metallica for the 1st time. Had a tendency to overplay that song. Because it was mellow and an easy listen. I used to tell them: "You want the REAL Metallica experience? Depending on your age, you may recall back in the day, kids were largely segregated into "cliques", you had you dorks & dweebs, the nerds, jocks & jockettes, and from a music trend standpoint, you had your "headbangers" (sometimes called "heads" or "bangers" before "metalhead" finally was settled on), and the "preps". The latter listened to all the mainstream rock and pop and new wave, and even rap & R&B as it rose in popularity. But the metal clique was largely ignored, shunned, and blamed for all society problems, lol, and we "bangers" listened to "angry noise", according to all who were not us. Never did the two groups - preps and bangers - EVER fraternize... until Metallica, 1988. In my social circles, the cliques were already beginning to interact, but One was that "one" song that quickly bridged the gap between the cliques (and formed a sub-clique known as the "skaters" ; avid skateboarders). Anyway, all the preps who got exposure to Metallica, latched on to "One" almost immediately, and they made that song almost hated by fans cos of the repetition (and the "sellout" accusations at the band for doing their first music video). I used to tote a huge boombox (or "ghetto blaster" as it was called then), so I always had the tunes, and they all nagged me to play "One". If it was coming up next on the tape currently playing, I'd inform them thusly, but if not, I'd say "screw you, I'm not a damn jukebox", lol. But the nagging alone made me, almost hate the song (or just "tire" of it). What was really infuriating was that the preps thought this song and the album was Metallica's first album and they were a "new band"... lol. F*ckin n00bs, eh? So I totally get the Nothing Else Matters thing... only that was worse in a way cos it got overplayed in karaoke pubs (overkill is bad enough but when sung by tone-deaf drunks, it's worse)... Unforgiven was another one, but not nearly as bad... And worse... One made its "overplayed" return via karaoke... almost hated the song all over again.

This is Metallicas one and only space song, its about all of us living on a rock thats flying, spinning, twisting and turning through the nothingness of space. Kinda terrifying when you think about it lol Also us humans lack the complete understanding of the universe cause its just too big, maybe endless. Theres a limit to what we can understand and the universe and everything in it is well beyond our limit. Thats what i get from this song, i love space and Metallica too so this song is perfect for me lol And i have no clue what you're talking about with lars drumming, its sounds no different than the rest of the album, the snare is the best sounding of all the albums. Lilly Jane, as you progress listen to this album, you will notice that it is a well-written album, and very well recorded. Bob Rock did a great job of production, mastering by the great George Marino is of very high quality, he knows this topic very well, the mixing and engineering of Randy Staub and Mike Tacci must also be credited. People generally don't recognize these other guys in the final result of "The Black Album", and in the success it continues to have more than 30 years later. It is much better to see the 1992 documentary released in two parts: "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica", there you can see how the album was recorded, live performances and a few more details. * Yes, Lars is a great drummer when he wants to, but when he doesn't want to... no one can pressure him. That's why Metallica takes years to compose and record their albums.

Also, Lars isn't like other drummers in his genre and a lot of people fail to realize that it was Lars who had the ambition as well as drive to go out there and start his own band that was heavily influenced by not only stuff like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, but Diamond Head, Motorhead, as well as the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) thing that happened at the tail end of 1979. Hell, Lars got his name out there in the music circles even before Lars had a band, and Lars followed Motorhead when they were playing in California in 1981 before Lars started Metallica. Lars IS NOT Dave Lombardo from Slayer, or Nick Menza from Megadeth, or any other famous metal drummer, and neither should he be. He was more progressive as well as technical with his drumming on the "And Justice for All" album because of the ridiculous peer pressure to be like other metal drummers at the time, and that didn't work for him in the long run because of how much of his drumming for that album he's had to relearn as well as remember. People SERIOUSLY need to do research on Lars as well as how and why he is when it comes to him and his drumming instead of just following the herd of sheep that is the "Lars Ulrich sucks without having a good reason" fan club. This is why I got on Lilly's case about her giving Lars shit.

I am a musician, and over the years I learned that it is better to be a good song writer, and a musician who knows how to adapt well to songs, than just a virtuoso guitarist or drummer. Guys like Yngwie Malmsteen or Tosin Abasi and even John Petrucci bore me after a while, but I appreciate and like the virtuosity of Neil Peart from Rush, Jazz legend Buddy Rich, or Bill Bruford from Yes, King Crimson and all his projects. These latter musicians work to make the songs the main thing, not their virtuosity as musicians. It seems that Yngwie, Tosin and Petrucci don't understand that the song comes first, instead of just showing how fast they can play and how theoretical they can be in 5 or 10 minutes of a song. Many people expect Metallica to return to what they were from 1983 to 1988, but why? They found that simplicity is their strong point, which is why the albums from 1991 until today have been much more successful than their classics. It happens with Thrash Metal, Death Metal and Black Metal that because they are underground, many Metalheads think that the mainstream is garbage compared to the Underground. Even Slayer, Death, Napalm Death, Carcass, or Opeth reached a point of commercializing themselves a little to survive in the music industry. It is a very curious topic, which always surrounds Metallica.

I'm nearly certain the issue she has is the highly compressed KZbin audio quality. I noticed as soon as I heard the snare. Drums are always the first thing you notice when the audio is compressed so much. 320 bitrate MP3 is CD quality. This sounds like 128. I have the original CD converted to 320 MP3, the recent remastered version and the Pono version that came out in 2014, which is hi-def 24-bit, 96kHz. The Pono version on my nice pair of studio monitors is one of the very best sounding pieces of audio I've ever heard.

I have the original 1991 release of this album on CD, as well as the recent 2021 remaster, and there's definitely a big difference in audio quality. Granted, I'm not an audiophile, so you might have more insight on that.

@@Vorgaloth You are correct, obviously it will be compressed, KZbin damages the audio quality a lot when uploading videos, especially if they are audio of songs that are 50, 40 or 30 years old as it is, they usually remaster them for CD and Vinyl, not necessarily for FLV, MP3, etc. Furthermore, Lilly did not take the audio from the band's channel due to the issue of blocking its channel with strikes, and it is assumed that it is a low quality copy. Likewise, she can get an idea of ​​the album, I hope she bought it in physical format like the others that she liked, so she can enjoy them much better.

'Through the never' was the Metallica 3D concert movie released in 2013, not a documentary... (It BOMBED in theaters 👎) They filmed shows in Canada and cast actor Dane DeHaan as a roadie at the concert who steps outside the venue to witness the apocalypse unfold while the concert rages 😂 It wasn't a very solid story... I would recommend seeing the documentary "A year and a half in the life of Metallica" - it was filmed between 1991 and 1992, capturing the troubled recording sessions for the 'black' album... followed by the grind of a year on tour from the brutal Moscow '91 concert to the ill-fated co-headline tour w/ Guns N' Roses where James Hetfield was hospitalized after a pyro mishap at a Montreal show.

ive noticed people cant relate to the different time signatures that people use outside of the normal 4/4 time. this is an uptime beat, so the snare snaps faster as a two-step beat but in rock. theres quite a few old rock and pop songs that do this if you try something like drum and bass, you'll hear this as the main beat. Lars made it more punk, but slower, they are big Discharge fans and this is their beat. Metallica covered Discharge and other punk bands and you can hear where it comes from i love this song. i'm used to hearing this kind of noise, and his trash sounding drums work well with the song, but maybe not what you expected. with the heavy riff and the words above it, its a great thrash song within a record that was more tailored to all audiences, while still bringing some of the old heavy for the supporters i always skip Nothing Else Matters. when i was in middle and high school this was everywhere on the radio and on people's playlists. i'm not a big fan of power ballads. i like more folk and progressive soft sections. like Opeth

Regarding the intro, can you play drums? I can. I re-listened to that intro to Through The Never I have heard maybe 1000 times since 1993 when I first heard it, just to see if I felt what you heard with my decades of XP knowing this song and adding my last 13 years playing drums in case I missed something - - I did not notice anything... What are you talking about? Is it the tone? No phasing? It literally matches the rest of the CD!!!!! 5:10 - Lars drumming here is semi simple but it is so over looked as always in Metallica songs as to the syncopation he adds that allows the guitars to add more that 'everyone' magically notices but not WHY the guitarist did that guitar bit....ugh. There's ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with Lars' drumming on this song or this album. My best guess is the audio quality that was used for the lyric video that you chose for the reaction video. Don't go blaming Lars here when the real issue is the crappy quality that the uploader chose for their lyric video. And I'm again going to very strongly disagree with you here about this song. This song is one of my favorites on this album because this is Metallica getting philosophical here while at the same time, making us aware of how small mankind is in the grand scheme of things. Nobody has done that before, to have us realize how small we are when it comes to our place in the universe, especially with the stuff that the James Webb Telescope has been discovering. The "Never" in this song's case is space, as well as our universe. Even with all of the great scientific minds we have out there pouring over what both the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes find out about our universe as well as how it works, we aren't going to know everything about it. have absolutely no issues with sound production nor the mix-down on the Black album. All in all, the album hasn’t aged too well. The spectacular sound captured fortunately saves the album for the weak-ish songwriting - what happens to be most memorable. The follow-up Load is far more focused and musical with similar outstanding production and sound engineering

More than one song I tend to skip lol. Holier Than Thou, Through the Never, Of Wolf and Man. Best on this album, to me, are Wherever I May Roam, Nothing Else Matters (yes, it gets played alot), The Struggle Within and my fave...My Friend of Misery. Death Magnetic...now that is their most underrated album...again IMO

It's about being finite beings whipping through space on a rock (Earth) with our infinite curiosity. The juxtaposition of thirsting for all knowledge, while existing only within the blink of an eye on the cosmic scale of time.
