Keep in mind Phil Collins was the drummer for Genesis.Ive seen this guy live 5 times....so I’m older, trust me when I tell you, no auto tune, no click tracks - real talent like this was everywhere in the 1980’s. A lot of his music was used in Miami Vice, and he played a role in that show. After he went solo, he matched the Beatles and Michael Jackson in record sales. Okay, I'm really trying here but Phil is a huge British icon, drummer/singer, how do you guys not know this?? This song is still huge no matter where you hear it. I saw him do this front and center and you honestly did yourselves a disservice by skipping a good portion of the entrance. That is the point of how he does this performance. He started out as the drummer for Genesis before becoming the front man and then going solo. Between his solo career and Genesis material, you two have a ton of songs to go watch. You missed an entire generation of great music - long before singers had to use auto tune to make themselves sound good. One of my favorite all time musicians . Brilliant drummer, singer, songwriter. Song written after he knew his wife cheating on him. Long story short..divorced and remarried. He's amazing. Great all the adjectives that describe Phil Collins. He had surgery for neck and other injuries from playing drums for decades. . His son actually went on tour with him and can play drums and other instruments just like his dad. He filled in on the drums for In the Air Tonight on tour. Before he took on the role of lead vocalist for Genesis, he was drummer and backing vocalist for many, many years in Genesis. He is, undoubtedly, a great drummer and this is not his greatest drumming example. You should hear some of the crazy timings early Genesis used to play to in songs like Dance on a Volcano. Note also, that in this live performance there were two drummers playing together, Phil Collins and Chester Thompson. I was back stage at Live Aid, Wembley, in 1985. Phil Collins played a live set at Wembley and then jumped on a Concorde, flew to NYC and played a live set there for the same event which had two simultaneous concerts going, one in London and one in New York.

Great solo artist, but you should check out him playing for Genesis too. And for shear percussion genius, some of his best work was with a jazz / rock fusion band called Brand X. As for Genesis, check out Firth of Fifth, Supers ready, and the Musical Box, to name but 3. They will blow your mind!

Phil Collins was the drummer in the band, Genesis. When Peter Gabriel left the band to pursue a solo career, they asked Phil Collins to fill in. Everyone ended up loving his sound. He left Genesis to pursue his own solo career. Both Phil and Peter were huge successes. This song was written after the break up of Phil's first marriage. No hidden meanings imo.

also I heard that Roger Taylor (the drummer from Queen, Which BTW is a great person and great in singing and drumming. idk why i'm mentioning this but yea) so Basically Genesis wanted Roger Taylor as drummer but he refused. Roger is great at drumming and singing, he searched for a band that time but still he refused. But if he had not refused then there would be no Phil Collins as we know him today.
