Wasn't just a regular audience, it was the biggest stars and the music industries top people at the time. They were all fans that day...just like us. That night was something the world will NEVER forget!!! I actually feel blessed to experience this live, with my entire family, my school, and a big percentage of the viewing world!!! To this day, even indigenous people who have NO TECHNOLOGY know who Michael is...even more than Jordan and others! He had the ability to reach out souls, and actually used his gift to help poor people from all over the world!

The crowd went nuts, and everyone at home did too. I was ten years old and we were all crowded around the television and were instantly awestruck by what had just happened. It was an instant sensation, kids in school were trying to do it the next day. They played the performance from the 25th Motown Anniversary on Mtv, and people couldn't get enough. It was an amazing time, and exciting since I had always been a Motown fan, and seeing this resurgence.

Here is a little history of the Moonwalk. There are many recorded instances of the moonwalk; similar steps are reported as far back as 1932, used by Cab Calloway. In 1985, Calloway said that the move was called "The Buzz" when he and others performed it in the 1930s

It's a standard mime move, too. I saw the French mime master Marcel Marceau when I was a child in the 70s, and he was old by then. He did the "walking against the wind" bit that incorporates what we now call the moonwalk. There were dancers doing the moonwalk on TV back when Michael was a child, and I'm pretty sure Michael saw both the early 70s film, The Little Prince, where Bob Fosse as The Snake does a moonwalk on sand (there's a clip of this on YT), and he went to the David Bowie show in 1974 at Los Angeles' Universal Amphitheater, where Bowie (who studied mime) also did a moonwalk. There's a YT clip of Bowie doing his version at that show, as well. I'm sure this move goes way, way, way back and was something that physical artists of many cultures knew how to do. Michael's is very impressive. Jeffrey Daniel, who used to be a Soul Train dancer and in the 70s-80s R&B pop group Shalamar, taught Michael directly how to do it. Daniel called it the backslide.

In 1944, Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien danced in a similar fashion in the movie "Meet Me in St. Louis". I got to watch it Live.... NO ONE compares to Michael Jackson. Taught myself how to moonwalk after watching it over and over again. The Gloved One was a Entertainer a gift from God! MJ will never be forgotten ❤️

This was during the Motown 25 celebration show. If you have the time have a look at it. Performances by Motown powerhouses like The Jacksons, Michael Jackson , Four Tops and The Temptation together on stage, Diana Ross who brought on the other Supremes,, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye (despite his fall out with Motown founder Berry Gordy), Stevie Wonder and many others. And it's not just the performances, it's also the stroll you take through Motown history up until that moment. When the show found its way to Europe I taped it and watched it many times over the years.

I remember seeing this at the time it came out. I was a young teen. I was glued to the TV, my heart racing and trying to absorb every second of it bc back then you never knew the next time you could rewatch the performance. No one back then had ever (to most peoples knowledge) moved the way he did. But then he did the moonwalk and our jaws collectively dropped! We were like..."What the hell did he just do?! Did he suddenly have rollerskates on or walked on ice?!" Then he did it again and we realised he did it with his feet! We were all gobsmacked! From that point on everyone spent the rest of the 80s trying to do the moonwalk! 😂 I feel so lucky to have lived through the 80s! What an amazing era for music!

Woooohoooo! Just witnessing the greatest ever. I remember seeing this "live" in my parents' den in my early 20s, still in college, and everyone in school wanted to dance like him. The famous Moonwalk was born that night. Wow wow wow. What great memories. Also most everyone was wearing parachute pants in high school & college thanks to this genius, Michael Jackson. Love him so much! He was magic.
