He may choose to not follow that path, but a passion for music is almost guaranteed. My father was a baker for 50 years and loved music. I don't enjoy baking at all, but the chemistry and methodology of it still fascinates me and I would likely commit suicide if music was banned for some reason.

@@00yiggdrasill00 My mom loved music of many different genres, and she could sing like an angel. I learned to love music through her. She was a walking "jukebox", she knew probably thousands of songs. Her mother died in 1932 when she was only eleven, but her mom taught her and her siblings how to sing in 4 part harmony. At family reunions, it was such a treat to hear those adult siblings sing the songs they learned as children; stuff like 19th century "murder ballads", funny novelty songs from the 20s, African-American field "hollers" and blues, and sacred hymns. I wish someone had recorded them back when. I'd give anything to hear them sing again.

For me, there is a huge contradiction between (say) the subtlety and delicacy of the music of the Renaissance versus the nightmare reality of those times, think of the music that Dowland and Tallis were writing while other people in England were being hanged, drawn and quartered. [Dowland himself wrote a desperate letter, pledging his loyalty as a good Protestant after spending some time in Rome, musicians needed jobs back then, too.] For Mark Stein, note that at this stage, religion was largely _fuelling_ the human rights abuses. Or come forward to the 18th century, where, at the beginning Bach, Handel and Vivaldi were writing music that sounds close to being divinely inspired. Then fast forward another 50 or so years, to when Mozart was writing perhaps some of the most perfect music the western tradition has ever produced, think of the clarinet concerto or the clarinet quintet. In the meantime, the industrial revolution was beginning and that was an exercise in workers' rights abuses. This was occurring against a background of colonialism, which typically took the view, "What's a spot of genocide amongst friends?" Yes, the music of the classical period is indescribably exquisite but, unfortunately neither that music nor Christianity have produced consistently good behaviour in those exposed to them.
