It's so fascinating to see people playing Portal for the first time, and watching them solve the puzzles in the most unnecessarily difficult ways lol. This game is so good that there are multiple ways people can get through it, and its so entertaining every time!

The game is very much designed to teach you slowly, and that's what's brilliant about this design. It's surprisingly hard to get a hang of portal mechanics for most people, and yet the game's able to teach folks most of the time quite well.

It's also intriguing to see that when she figures out something, that is now the hammer and every puzzle afterwards looks like a nail until it doesn't work.

That's why TC3 is so important and when you turn on the developer commentary they mention that. So many playtesters didn't realise that you can also walk into the orange portal. She would have been one of those testers :) You can only complete this trivial chamber by realising exactly that. It's great to see the progress unfolding chamber by chamber. Like in chamber 5. I've seen people getting through 3 much quicker but struggle at 5 because they didn't really reaslise what they've done in 3. The level design and progression is really clever. If you have the time, I recommend playing through the game again with the in-game developer commentary.

the problem is that she solved some of the initial puzzles by accident so she skiped part of the tutorial, i was afraid she was going to pass the turrets without learning you coouuld drop boxes on their heads like the ratman drawings show

@@devforfun5618 :D Right, this happens way too often and it's kinda frustrating to watch, but somehow she gets through. So there's enough determiniation. This pretty much continues in portal 2 :D. Many times she doesn't watch the "wires" of the buttons what they actually do. She just places the box like in full auto mode, thinks about the last story lines and forgets what she just did and searches around the next 10 minutes what to do :) Anyways, considering the achievements of P1 and P2, too many people did not finish the games. Only 63% got to the companion cube and only 52% did finish Portal 1. Portal2 is even crazier. Only 76% watched through the intro. That means about 24% who own the game have either never played it or haven't gone through Wheatley's "manual override" at the beginning. Only 55% got to the light bridges. Only 39% got to the "white gel". And only 35% finished the game. So in the grad scheme she's doing pretty good :)

:D there are countless moments where things learned and used a dozend times before got forgotten again and again. Though when playing for the first time it's a really steep learning curve and a lot of information to take in and to make it sink in. At some points I was actually impressed about her spatial thinking skills. She gets some puzzles where others get stuck a really long time almost immediately. Especially those which requires thinking about the angles of reflection of the energy balls. Though that part of "speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out" doesn't really looked like that it sank in properly :) Anyways, for the first run not bad.

one of the cool things about glados is how when she's insulting you, it's almost like she's just pulling from a database of "things humans find insulting" instead of actually tailoring her insults to the player character. "you're adopted" is like THE classic childish taunt.

Chamber 17 really demonstrates how easily you can get people to bond with an inanimate object. Take a perfectly normal cube, slap some heart logos on the sucker and then make the player use that single cube to do no more than 5 different things, and suddenly the player cannot bear to part with it and feels real guilt for incinerating it. It's [just] a cube! (It's really not just a cube though!)

Fun fact: the companion cube was originally going to be a perfectly normal cube, but during testing the devs found that players just _would_ not think of taking it with them. They'd leave it behind and forget about it, and then get stuck. The devs' solution? Slap a heart on the thing and call it a "companion cube".

Chamber 03 is always painful to watch, because it's the first one to truly force you to think with portals. Which is surprisingly difficult to do the first time. Once you've grasped the concept it's an extremely simple puzzle, so anyone who's played before is just staring intensely at the answer the whole time.

The way this line is captioned makes me think it might have been left ungarbled by mistake and they just never went back and patched it. "The Enrichment Center is required to remind you that you will be baked [garbled] cake." In what seems to be its original intended form, the line is a lot more ambiguous. It's also possible that foregoing the planned garbling was a conscious choice because they just liked Ellen McLain's delivery so much.

11:35 entities can act weird around portals especially the testing apparatus which has a weird sticky hit box sometimes if you get stuck near a portal the game will deal 100000000000 damage to the player to prevent them from soft locking

I remember when I would play this game as a kid, I scoured the internet desperately for ways to complete the test without euthanizing my Companion Cube. There were all sorts of youtube videos about ways you could glitch the game using broken security cameras and stuff like that, most of which were bs. Most attached I've ever been to a video game character, and it's an inanimate object haha. Warms my heart to see you fell in love with the metal box too!

One thing to know about the original ending of Portal, before the sequel existed: After you levitate out to the surface, it simply has you laying down and watching the wreckage of GLaDOS fall around; then it faded out and showed the cake down deep in the facility. When Portal 2 came out, the part with the robot approaching you, speaking, and dragging you was added.

@@MegMage no it's great thanks for this :)) It's super funny when you forget to use Portals a couple of times in the game called Portal. Mainly when they started shooting you lol. But I'm sure 17 years ago I did the same thing. 💀. Hope to see you try the sequel.

Totally agree! It's always easy when you know how, but until it 'clicks' it takes a while for your brain to work it out. Anyone who says they got it immediately is lying :)

@@phraggers I wouldn't quite go that far. The puzzles and mechanics in Portal exercise certain logic and problem solving skills that most people don't use a ton in life, but there are some people who have to think in similar ways on a regular basis, and I'm sure some of those people actually do get it immediately. But it shouldn't be the expectation, of course, because everyone has a different level of experience with that kind of thinking.

Portal was a very short little bonus item released alongside Half Life 2, there are a bunch of little nods made to the fact that it takes place in the same universe. The biggest one is the mention of "Black Mesa" in the wonderful closing theme, which is their rival laboratory and where the first Half Life mostly takes place The line at 3:15:03 is also a nod to Half-Life, it's just about the only time in her monologue she's 100% telling the truth

I don't think I've ever solved the companion cube level like the game wanted me to. They gave me so many cameras in that rat man room that I just stack them with the cube on top and climb out the exit.

Test 14, if you place a portal on ground next to exit lift, and then jump off top of stairs when they are collapsed, you can place a portal in "the pit" that will throw you higher than the platform and exit. Skips the whole level. hee hee

Oh wow this was my first PC game I ever played and Portal 2 was my favorite for a long time. This game takes place in 2009 and it takes place in the Half Life universe. If you have played it or you plan to you will find out why it’s not safe up there.

i think they mention it in the sequel, but the things on your legs are like shock absorbers so that you can jump from really high places and not get hurt on the landing. it's a fun detail that a lot of games wouldn't have bothered with, relying on the player to just accept that you were immune to fall damage.

GLaDOs is one of the best Supporting characters in video game history, and I cannot blame you for being enthralled by her. Portal 2 will be a fun ride, and I would reccomend playing through Portal Stories: Mel after you complete Portal 2's main campaign. (Also, as mentioned by other commentors, the Portal 2 Co-Op campaign has its own story and takes place after the Single Player campaign.) Always a joy to see you post. Good luck!
