Nudity tends to symbolize innocence, purity, and vulnerability. With chains, thorns, and harmful objects, it means the characters are being tainted, harmed, etc. But that's just my take on it.

Also... Getting naked in anime (and to a certain degree in japanese culture but not as heavily as in anime obviously) is a reference or symbolism to "baring yourself" aka showing your true colors, your heart, your intentions, essentially exposing yourself in a certain way... the difference usually is in how it is shown... in the case of the chains or thorns it is because that innability to show your real self imprisons the character... When the nakedness is meant to reflect innocence and purity it is most often shown in a background with a lot of light or bright colors, and when that pureness is being tainted you can also use the chains or stuff like that but it also shows the change from going from bright to dark along with the "binding" progressing, not just the binding and darkness already there...

nudity isnt as taboo in japan as it is in the west and anime likes using it for symbolism as it can represent innocence, purity, openness without ulterior or hidden agenda/motives and vulnerability because theyre exposed fully basically nudity is a way to represent the true self underneath anything and everything that can be used to alter the perception of the character and in this cases her posture and being bound in chains represent that shes restricted in some way

Accel World is a beautiful anime, a classic of it's time, and hooooooly, some moments can break your heart. For those, who've seen the show - I'm talking about THE WINGS. Accel World has a really interesting futuristic concept, a heart breaking drama, sweet romance, some moments that can motivate you, good action scenes, and character designs. It was released in the golden age of anime. Also, forgot to add - a rivalry that develops into bromance. 13:34 - A little bit of explanation without giving a context: MC (the chubby guy) = Pig (his avatar) = Silver Crow (His "battle avatar". It's the silver robot, that had no arm in 1st ED) / Girl with long black hair = Herself but with wings (butterfly, her avatar) = *spoiler*.

@@kiryukaimemorial Yeah I think its always going to be painted by nostalgia and as a result super subjective. Though I will say anime did objectively have a massive upswing in quality and saturation in the mid 00s to 2010s. Though I imagine a large portion of the anime community were introduced or largely involved in that time frame too. So its not surprising the time shifts a bit, depending on when anyone was the most involved and hype around the community. I mean I still watched a ton of anime from the early 00s, I mean I've been watching since before I even knew the distinction of anime, watching late night on toonami or saturday mornings. All that considered, I think I connect more with the latter 00s to 2010s, as thats when it was getting bigger and a hell of a lot more accessible to watch. Going from pirated fansubs or (Part 1 of 3) vids on youtube or old school physical media (which was Pricy!). I also graduated highschool in 2012, so obviously that time frame is likely to be the most impactful and memorable to me. I mean theres a reason I have a Gurren Lagann and Fairy Tail shoulder tattoos. I mean they all have meaning beyond that to me, but theres a reason its something I can connect with in such a way, that I'd mark it permanently. All that being said I always loved Accel world and hope one day it'll get a resurgence and adaptation if Reki ever moves his focus from SAO, I mean he's been releasing them simultaneously for ages, but I would like another chance at the anime. Think they really borked it with how they handled the movie. So who knows if production companies will ever feel confident enough to risk it, maybe once sao is gone, but they're gonna keep going with it as long as they can. Its a shame how often really interesting series get shafted or get the read the LN or manga treatment. Especially back in the day, anime were rarely finished and always treated as promotion for the source material. Some just don't perform as well either, like damn I would have killed to see a second season of Blood Lad or Btooom.

Accel World has one of the best soundtracks of all time. A lot of VERY talented people came together to make it. Accel World the anime takes place in a Virtual World 20 years after SAO. It is a sequel series to SAO from 2009. Think SAO but Sci Fi. The singer for the 2nd OP sadly passed away last year which is heartbreaking. ALTIMA is one of my fav bands, they did a lot of music. You are missing 1 opening for this series, the movie OP from a few years ago also by ALTIMA, "Plasmic Fire" and its maybe my favorite song they ever did. It was with another famous anime music artists called "Kotoko" who did a lot of OP and EDs as well, Including "Shakugan no Shana' which you watched. Plasmic Fire is just so damn good and one of the last major things the singer did before she passed.

The anime SAO is an adaptation from a Light Novel series which originated from a web novel. Accel World is also an anime adapted from a Light Novel series by the same author. The nudity in the opening, as others have pointed out, is a matter of symbiology. Vulnerable, exposed, bound/chained/trapped. It actually ties into their "power ranger suits" (lol)....actually explaining that further may be bit of a spoiler.

yes Accel world is by the same author as SAO and it's indeed set in the same world but in the distant future. as for the nudity, most of the time it's a clear metaphore for who that character really is since nakedness is the yours "purest" or "cleanest" form without anything to twist who you are like clothes or jewlery. there's a scene in one piece in which luffy saves a kingdom and while in the royal bath the king bow down to luffy in graditude and when his advisor tells him that a king should never bow down the king replies: "Authority is something you where over your clothes. There is no such thing as a naked king" and that tells you a lot of the meanning of being naked in japan. there's a believe that once you bath with someone else where you're both naked, you will form a bond stronger than any other regular friendship. it's quite amazing how the japanese are straight contrast to the west, the west shames nudity while the east embraces it as a perfectly natural thing.

The second op is one of my favorite openings of all time called BURST THE GRAVITY and one of my favorite groups Altima, which consist of the lead singer Maon Kurosaki (RIP), greatest hype man and rapper MOTSU (he was also in a group called m.o.v.e, for a good time look them up they did openings for Initial D back in the day), and keyboardist and composer SAT (Yaginuma Satoshi, he is in another group that was a duo now a trio, called fripSide.) They also did a opening theme and ending theme for Shana as well. I like the ending theme as well sang by KOTOKO, she collabs with Altima years later for the Accel Movie, which I don't recommend but the song PLASMIC FIRE is so awesome.

Accel World takes place in the future of Sword Art Online, I think about 20 years ahead or so. The mechs are the characters avatars in the game they play, which is a first person fighting game this time instead of a MMORPG - and the fact they're mechs is important because it hides their identity, something not as important in SAO as is here. Also, the "animals" are their avatars in the regular network they access, because here they can pretty much full dive into the internet. SO Butterfly girl is just the girl's avatar, and the pig is the small guy's avatar (which is hilarious when you think about the second ending, where she pretty much gets jealous of herself). What's interesting in AW, is that unlike SAO, there is way more interconnection between what happens in the game and the real world, for reasons I won't spoil. The real world is also pretty messed up, almost like a dystopian cyber punk where everyone is under surveillance 100% of the time (foreshadowed in a throwaway scene in the second season of SAO, almost no one notices it) and you get ads in your brain while walking down the street, but you miss it if you don't pay attention because while this kickstarts the plot, it's not the main focus. Anf finally, you'll see a lot of similarities between the girl and Kirito - the main character in SAO. The black hair with black eyes, the dual sword fighting style, and even the extreme skills and obsession with the virtual world, which sparked all kinds of theories which I'm not really sure are confirmed or not. IMHO, it's way better than SAO in every aspect, but unfortunately never got as popular even though the Anime started a few months earlier than the first season of SAO, thus it only got a single season. Which is a real shame.

You should totally watch it! Accel World is like an hidden gem. Very famous, but at the same time so easily forgotten, because the anime came out in the same period of other famous anime lile SAO etc.. Perhaps made by the same author, it takes place in the same universe, but a lot of years in the future. In fact at a certain point in the anime they show old peripherics and there is also the NervGear, used for SAO. And in Accel World they introduced for the first time the concept of Inc****tion, a power that included in the last SAO season.

This probably late but the familiarity you got from 2nd opening probably came from Shakugan no Shana OST. ALTIMA (the band name) was sung that opening and 2 Ending for Shakugan no Shana S3 (I remember you had reacted the opening but I forgot have you reacted the ending or not). And btw, KOTOKO (the one who sung Shakugan no Shana Final first opening - the one you've said is the banger one, which I also agree) is also sung the first ending of Accel World

So some explanation/synopsis detail about Accel World. The world is set in the future of SAO essentially, there are some slight references to the nerve gear headset and all that, but basically, virtual reality is what you need to know. Haru, the chubby boy is our protagonist and the pig is his avatar in VR. The metallic suits and power ranger-looking suits are all people playing some sort of "battle game" essentially. The players get a heightened sense of reality based on how good they are in the game? or something. Hence the name; Accel World. They fight each other for a "wish" and the winner of that game will be granted it. It's been more than 5 years since I last watched the show, but these are the essentials I remember.

Accel World and SAO have the same author but different artists, Hima for AW and Abec for SAO, they also were produced by different studios. Accel World takes place about 20 years after SAO is supposed to take place. The characters don't know if the timeline is the same just that they have some identical tech. The games where they crossover is definitely a different timeline from SAO because of... someone. And I think the LN crossover, unless there's a later one I don't know of, only the 2 involved would know if it actually happened because there were no witnesses, and it's an Accel World side story that happens between season 2 and 3 of SAO. I believe Accel World is still ongoing. And SAO definitely is.

As for the connection between the Accel World and the SAO, the author denied this about 10 years ago. Since then, the two series have now shared characters in the books. Anime is not being produced, because literally from the next season, the concentration of SAO should greatly increase, including explanations of the technology of the world. And in the category of hints, now there is the possibility of a very bad end for the SAO. There is already enough material in the SAO books for a whole season, and there may be more, so SAO will be with us for many more years, and only then will the opportunity open for any spoiler materials such as Accel World. As for Kuroyukihime, she biologically comes from a completely different family. Not biologically - well, there are some very suspicious dates... with a hint of possible rebirth. We'll see it on the screen sometime around season 4 or 5. Good luck to all of us.

@@zam023 it’s not impossible and it’s actually not that far ahead into the future. In the current SAO Light Novel arc being currently written, Unital Ring. A character from Accel World has appeared. In Accel World itself it’s said that Accel World is about 15-20 years in SAO’s future. Tech like the cameras they use in Accel World to monitor things like the school have already been shown to be in SAO. They also use the incarnation system in Accel World. A really important feature in Alicization that the anime kinda made less important than it actually is.

Accel World was written by the same author as Sword Art Online which is Reki Kawahara and it actually is happening in the same world as SAO but over 20 years in the future. Basically if you ever go watch the 3rd season of SAO you will see them working on technologies that is common day to day use in Accel World, hell they even talk at one point in Accel World about the past versions of the current hardware they use for Full Dive, and they mention AmuSphere which you will see in the next few episodes of the first season of SAO you are currently watching.

Accel World is written by SAO's author, and like in SAO, It's about a VR Game called Accelerated World, but without the death game element. Basically those Mech look things are the player avatars inside the game. It was also hinted that it takes place in the same universe as SAO as Nervegear from SAO was mentioned in one of the episodes as a device that actually exist in their universe.

Basically if you see a cosplay type or animal type character, they are avatars in VR world.. if you saw a mech type characters, they are from the special server in VR world called Accel world It’s a same universe of SAO in a very distant future

The "mecha" are the person's avatar in the accelerated VR game world, which has a different, accelerated timescale compared to the real world (hence "accel" world) and that idea is explored in later SAO volumes. The mecha designs are automatically made by the game system and derived from the person's fears or something like that, which I thought was a neat idea.

OVERDUE! Finally! Also Accel World aired one season before Sword Art Online aired. I actually personally started Sword Art Online, BECAUSE I watched Accel World before. Also 2nd Opening by ALTIMA... RIP the female vocal, Kurosaki Maon 🙏 Also by reacting to Accel World, you've reacted to artists you haven't listen to a lot, but recently did, e.g. May'n and KOTOKO. ALTIMA is a first and Misawa Sachika (2nd Ending) is the Voice Actor the Black long haired butterfly girl, Kuroyukihime. Definitely need to react to more of these artists!!!!

This actually isn't the first time you've seen nudity in anime actually.....or openings o-o;; There's an SAO x Accel World collab game. Accel World also has a small collab with the ALO (SAO elf world of Alfheim) video game where Purple Queen was a boss, it was fun actually for what its worth. Also nudity represents baring one's soul or heart. Two souls looking at each other.

I'm sure this anime is set about 40 years after sword art online. It's not related but set in the same world. It's about an AR world where the real and digital world Co exist on the same plain. It's actually really good.

Either it's the same or Alternative (probably alternative, since there's no other incident related to sao after the first incident) Since they mentioned what happens to Sao incident and also nerve linked. In the manga and Lightnovel it literally draw and mentioned the Nerve gear

the reason some characters appear naked at times is because when they control their video game avatars their bodies are scanned in game as a virtual copy of themselves naked so it shows that transition from real life to video game avatar

Getting naked in anime (and to a certain degree in japanese culture but not as heavily as in anime obviously) is a reference or symbolism to "baring yourself" aka showing your true colors, your heart, your intentions, essentially exposing yourself in a certain way... So in the openings where you see that it essentially means the character getting naked is about to reveal something about themselves... which may be secrets, feelings, or they are finding their real sense of self, stuff like that... That is why it is so common when it is done in a symbolic kind of way... then there is just random ecchi stuff which is just there as fanservice... Butterfly = change, transformation metamorphosis... The girl shown naked in the 1st opening is the same one in the butterfly suit and with butterflies flying around her in the endings too... Meaning she is changing while finding herself or showing her true self to others... probably the guy with her in the ending...

Accel World, despite being denied by the author, is said to take place in the same universe as SAO, but at least one if not two generations later (fans theorize that it is one generation, as one of the important characters does have a lot of things in common with Kirito and Asuna. The Nerve Gear (and i think the AmuSphere as well) also gets briefly mentioned as a thing from the past in one episode, so even though the author denies the connection, basically everyone doubts that claim. I´m trying to stay vague about what the show is about, so this shouldnt be anything spoiler-ish, but it may tease a few things for sure, so proceed with caution: The general idea is, that Augmented Reality is basically utilized in almost every aspect of daily life. This includes school, watching stuff, playing video games etc. etc. The technology is somewhat similar to the AmuSphere, but way more advanced. However: there is a particular game that can only be played by certain people that meet specific requirements. That game takes place in an AR-version of reality, however it is experienced in a drastically accelerated fashion (a single second in the "not accelerated" world, aka reality, is ~16 minutes in the "accelerated world"). That´s where the name "Accel World" comes from ("accelerated world"). So, when these (as you called them) "mechs" were shown in the opening, those were the avatars of the characters shown in the same scene respectively (with a few exceptions that cannot be explained spoiler-free). It´s basically the same principle as SAO, but with AR instead of Full Dive, and a good bunch of additional things that are relevant. So no, it´s not related to mechs in any way (well, maybe one character, but definitely not the show). For the genre: it does have some minimal things that come from the isekai genre ("accelerated world", and going by why SAO is considered isekai, a few minor factors also play into that), but it´s Sci-Fi for the vast majority of the show (with the obligatory romance and action-parts built in)

Finallyy! It's about damn time 😂 Accel World OPs and EDs are so good and hype they've been in my playlist since a long time ago when I first watched this show. If I'm not mistaken they're sung by the same singer that's why it kinda sounds similar. I mean the vibe of the song IS similar also kinda like AOT. The show is actually pretty good. Season 1 amazing. Season 2 is a bit slow but just that. I'm surprised they didn't continue it tho 😢

I thought that was pretty cool in a way cause it shows how the tech from SAO progressed years later. The characters in this anime can go to the virtual world and the protagonist's avatar is a pig while his love interest is the girl that has a butterfly theme in her avatar. There's online gang wars too and stuff. The naked characters in OP/ED of anime are sometimes for some symbolism but sometimes it's just fanservice although sometimes it's both (usually you can tell by the story the anime has). In the case of this show, it's probably cause technically they are naked as the mech versions of them are just their online avatars which they're controlling with their minds and stuff. Before SAO and Accel World, the popular series about online games with some life or death battles is .hack (yes, the dot is part of the title). It's a pretty big franchise (both anime and game) so it's got a lot of OPs and EDs. You should check some of those out (the OP and ED from .hack//Roots are great).

So the comments speak a lot about the nudity which I also just overlooked as fanservice. It was insightful to know there may have been a purpose for that in the show. Going on about that I think I have an understand of what the 2nd ending is trying to convey. The girl there is like the female lead form the anime. The butterfly avatar is the same person just a persona they use in the virtual world, so I think the ending was trying to show how the female lead's emotions or behaviour are repressed (links back to opening 1 where she was nude and had chains over her) and the butterfly avatar is representing her suppressed emotions but cranked up to the extreme. Hence the main point of this ending was just to show how much she loves mr pig or the protagonist in this case; Haru iirc.

for the longest time, SAO and Accel World were heavily implied to be part of the same universe, with Accel World taking place an unknown number of decades after SAO. This was mainly ever implied and has never been hard confirmed. To briefly explain without touching on any spoilers: the series is made by the same author as SAO, but has never been confirmed to be attached to the series, and one of many subplots in the story is the mystery of if it even is connected-- and if so, how exactly is it connected? I'd argue that Accel World is in many ways more interesting than SAO, but I'd also argue that the presence of Accel World actively makes SAO much more interesting as well, just due to the strange meta-narrative mystery that surrounds it. I'd recommend giving it a shot someday.
