Layne was basically singing at his own funeral here. He was really strung out here.

Yep, people knew about his addiction and he was highly disrespected by media for that, which was really unfair - he was a extraordinarily beautiful human being. The thing you said about him saying "good bye" through this song is interesting, since it's popular among fans to say that this performance was the closest thing ever to "a man singing at his own funeral". He passed away 6 years after the Unplugged show, although some say that he was dead inside at this point already, since not long before it his fiance died a drug related death. Most people will recommend something from Live at the Moore, his voice was then at his healthiest, but I'd say the best one to check out would be Junkhead live at the Singles Party - his voice didn't really deteriorate at this point but he had already perfected his style. It's one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard and it takes on his condition from a more raw, visceral and cynical angle. Check it out.

The only real difference between this and the album version is the lead guitar parts were done on electric, other than that pretty much sounds similar

R.I.P. Layne Staley. I get teary-eyed every time I hear it because Layne was loved by so many. I won't get into the message on that guitar but it's a dig at Metallica for showing their "ass" in talking about Layne's addiction problem. Pot calling the kettle black kinda sh*t.

For me this performance is great, NOT HIS BEST, VERY SAD AND SCARY to watch, he was just a shadow of his former self, a "BAG OF BONES," like him singing his own EULOGY, it was one of his last performances and public appearances before he became a RECLUSE, and died 6 years later

Layne's music will make grown man cry.... or feel feelings. He had an amazing gift... along with his band members .... the best vocalist that you can literally feel the sadness and pain. It's good to let it out... His music is pure raw emotion. Not for everyone, but it's so personal it's amazing
