What amazes me is how brave Angelina was. You could see how she walked out on stage…. the sheer confidence in her at only seven! It was she that pestered her mother to participate in the talent show when she was still five years old. The show would only allow 7 years old and up to participate. The drive she must have had (and probably still does). Often I have heard from reviewers that Angelina is “musically possessed” and this first talent show performance shows this. If you ever review her cover of Etta Jame’s “I’d Rather Go Blind”….. just before she starts singing watch her eyes…. they stare into the distance and move back and forth almost like she is in REM sleep. In an interview, when Angelina was 12, she stated that when she sings her mind travels into a different place that is all music and light and is wonderful. Maybe she truly is musically possessed!

I have always believed that Billie Holiday was the ultimate jazz singer and when I heard Angelina sing this song at 7, what shocked me the most was that she sounded just like Billie, who was 29 when she sang it. This is when all the reincarnation talk began about Billie and Angelina began.

To this day, I go back to Gloomy Sunday by both of them and am always astonished at how similar they sound. The fact that she had only heard Billie singing the song, the night before her audition, and told her mom she wanted to sing it the next day for NGT, is what I would call the ultimate in 'quick study'.

It appears that Angelina absorbs all things music so readily and naturally that what is for her like sipping a lemonade is for the rest of us like drinking from a firehose. Part of that is to absorb a song's genre, cadence, and emotional content then her other superpower comes into play, being able to re-imagine, to reconstruct, and then to flawlessly deliver all that back to her audience!

Many in the comments are saying they are having a tough time hearing when you speak Britt. The volume was louder for the music but I could hear you fine. The first judge to speak (handsome Omer) said he had goosebumps from the start and was at a loss for words. The second judge exclaimed, "You ARE music". The third judge said Angelina was born to sing and was a star. The final judge said it is hard to understand how a child can sing like an adult and asked Angelina if she knew what the song was about and Angelina replied, "It is about a sad Sunday" to which he agreed.

AJ speaks several languages, jazz may be the first among them. She walked around with a tablet listening to songs she selected from around 2 years old. After she found Billie Holiday, she became obsessed with jazz and must have listened to hundreds of hours, if not thousands, while still learning to speak. So jazz was learned along with Norwegian and any other languages spoken at home. I suspect her early knowledge of English was at least in part due to jazz singers. As to languages spoken at home, her grandparents spoke Norwegian, Farsi, Japanese and Swedish, at least. AJ could not help but be adaptable.

The answer is that she actually wanted to audition when she was younger, but the minimum age was 7. :) Love your Angelina reactions. Her style of singing is classic, not seen nor heard anymore and she is re introducing it to the world once again. Jazz was huge in the late 19th early 20th century and originated in African American communities. It got recognized globally and many styles were created from it. It is a complex style of music and love that Angelina was able to tap into it's complexity even so at an early age.

You'll notice the last judge (the one with his mouth open) asked her if she knew what the song was about. I believe he was asking to see if she was aware of the history of the song. That's because 'Gloomy Sunday' is known to history as 'The Hungarian Suicide Song' and was banned in parts of Europe during WWI because many believed the song had led to a rash of suicides in the population. Angelina, unaware of this at the time, I'm sure, simply replied Yes, it's about a sad Sunday and I think the judge was pleased to realize she had a simple child's view of the song and it's meaning. Thus the comment in essence Yes I could feel that sad sunday. Amazing Angelina would start her career with such a controversial song. I'm guessing she has since learned the history and it would be interesting to hear what she would think about it today. Color me curious. ♥👣👸🏻 Here is a quote from Angelina (7y) from an interview with TV2 after her Auditions NTG 2014. "The reason I chose this song is completely random. I love jazz, but" Gloomy Sunday "was random. It was a night I could not sleep and my mother was stressed that I was awake long after midnight. Then I borrowed my mom's iPad where I wanted to listen to jazz on KZbin before I fell asleep. Then came a picture of a beautiful lady screaming at the sky and with her eyes closed. I heard the song "Gloomy Sunday" that night and then I had to hear it every day. I love the melody. I understood well what the text was about because I know English well. Every time I sang it I felt something special about it, it's hard to explain in words. When I sang it for mom, she said that this song is nice, but that it was incredibly sad song. " ♥👣👸🏻🎷 In a interview after this performance Angelina's mom was asked why she was crying during her performance?? Were they happy tears?? Mom said; " They were happy tears but they were also sad tears because I know I just lost my daughter to the world. ♥👣👸🏻🎷

That's a good summary, Ole. I guess Bjarte didn't delve further into the meaning of the song because that theme (suicide) doesn't suit a family friendly show like this. It's important to note that the more critical second verse was not sung, also for this reason I believe. There's a third verse that puts it into perspective (it was just a bad dream). The list of notable appearances of this song on Wikipedia contains 99 entries up to 2021, including Angelina's NGT appearance which is the 90th.

She's such a cutie. This is a very good performance for her age, but what a miracle she accomplishes with her growth throughout this show's season. The first judge said she was an old soul and gave him goosebumps and then ran out of words. The second judge said, "You ARE music!" Take a look at the recording with the subtitles. It’s beneficial because it is the raw reaction of 4 trained musical ears to the ‘coming out’ of 7 yo AJ. The ‘handsome’ judge (yes he is😊) said first thing that she is an old soul. I never believed the ‘re-incarnation’ if souls until I heard AJ about a year ago. I believe she embodies the spirt of the great (often tortured female jazz artists) performers who have gone before her. There is no other explanation for the genius that she embodies.

There is a video with all four songs she sang in this show .. over a few months, I suppose. Make sure you get the one with translations so you hear the charm and wonder of the judges .. they are worthy and their insight and comments are lovely. All four songs are phenomenal. the 2nd one is I'm a Fool to Want You (a capella! ) .. then she does Bang, Bang and finishes with Summertime. Pretty extraordinary and you actually see amazing growth from one song to the next. She blew up the internet worldwide with Gloomy Sunday, when i first saw and fell in love with her. PS .. I just watched your reaction to ANGELINA JORDAN "I'M STILL HOLDING ON TO YOU" (should be "I''M STILL HOLDING OUT FOR YOU") and you had comments turned off for some reason, so I'm commenting here. She was only 10 or 11 at the time and there is a good story about why this was pulled from her channel that I'm sure you would appreciate. The "handsome" judge you refer to in this NGT competition is Omer Bhatti, a Norwegian Rapper and dancer rumored to be one of Michael Jackson's sons....no proof of that that I know of. He became good friends of Angelina and her family and there are a few videos and pics out there showing them together. This old style of jazz was ingrained in this child from a very early age by her Grandma Mery Zamani who would play the jazz greats for Angelina and take her to record stores in Oslo to purchase Albums of the jazz artists she likes...Billy, Ella Fitzgerald, Louie Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington and many more I suspect, Jazz is infused in her entire being.
