to Barry -- Despite all of this "different approaches" (being fine and very fine etc.), it is mostly technical thing to do (laboratory for research different ways to phrase = skill set). One can be amazed by all that (no one can do that in pop szenery). The same story - as e.g. - with AJ jazzy-rendition of MJ Billy Jean: all what she is doing vocally is/can be superb, original and unmatched, but leaves one (me) kind of "un-touched" as a human being (her singing is cold und distant). Even if it turns out, that she is "musical genius" and will be praised and recognized for her singing in the future. -- You may not share my view, but maybe I have a point to make. Mozart , despite being fine and very fine etc. in his mastery, touches me as a human being (e.g. Renee Fleming singing) - why so?

Toby Gad is a multi Grammy award winning songwriter and producer. He has worked with many of the biggest superstars in the music industry producing award-winning hits. He has recently produced an album of his top songs called Piano Diaries. He invited Angelina to perform If I Were a Boy with him at piano. This song was originally made famous by Beyoncé in 2008, and has received over 600 million views. Most believe Angelina's version is much more intimate and emotional, and she has made it hers. Move over Beyoncé! It is more of a reimagining than a cover. Toby and Angelina also have been working on some original music, the first of which is a pre-release. Bad Valentine is a jazzy, soulful, and powerful song that is perfectly suited for Angelina's voice. I think it has great potential to be a hit! If you go to James Thiel, AKA the Summa Engeneer, that I call Angelina's Prophet, you'll find a live version of both, If I were a boy and Bad Valentine that they performed( same trio+ a violin) at the Hotel Cafe in LA the day before they flew to London ( Andrew Lloyd Webber Palladium)for the presentation of Toby's Piano Diaryes project. Hi Britt. I absolutely love your analysis and interpretation of Angelina’s performance of this song. Other reactors have, as expected, addressed the things that place her so unassailably in a class of her own, completely unapproached by any other artist: her otherworldly voice, which only seems to be getting better, her incomparable musical genius, her elegance, confidence and class, all of which are stunningly displayed here. As far as I know, you are the first to point out the difference in attitude: Beyonce seems to be almost pleading to the guy while, in sharp contrast, Angelina seems to be sending a powerful 'don’t-you-mess-with-me' type of message. And then topping it off with the almost contemptuously delivered last line, a capella, “but you’re just a boy”.

A cover only in the sense that what Beyoncé made was a cover of the song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad, originally performed by Jean in 2008. Beyoncé's cover was that same year. In this video the pianist is Toby Gad .. the Piano Diaries are a celebration of his hit songs. He invited Angelina to England with him to perform .. this is the fourth version I have heard. Toby is re-releasing many of his compositions with current artists (called the Piano Diaries), arranged in the way he feels now. He selected Angelina for this song. When introducing her for If I Were A Boy at The Other Songs Live at The London Palladium for the biggest live performance-based celebration of songwriters of all time on Monday 20 May 2024, Toby said "What could be better than performing with the world's greatest singer? Performing with the world's NEXT greatest singer the world doesn't know yet - Angelina Jordan". He said in an interview that after hearing her on AGT The Champions, he knew he had to work with her. The more I look at this team the more excited I get. I like many had no idea who Toby Gad is. I learned about him after her first performance with him. Another Powerhouse Writer Producer who has worked with only the best of the Industry past and present. Diane Warren another legend visited with Angelina but little came of it. This is very different than that. Angelina and Toby have declared they are working on original material together that they hinted would be available this fall. We are all of course hoping is the long-awaited Album. Some predictions in the past have failed to materialize as predicted. Let's hope this is not the same. And I've been thinking about the timing which would be brilliant. Many have mentioned a release in September would be late to qualify for this year’s Grammys. What if that is the plan. We already have two Grammy worthy releases with 'If I Were a Boy' and 'Bad Valentine out right now which will be eligible this year. Produced and performed by two powerhouse singer/songwriters/producers in Angelina and Toby. All of the songs on the album would be eligible for the following year's Grammys. At least in this scenario. If one or both songs win a Grammy think about the runway that would have for a Full year and from the very same powerhouse duo. Having already won they will both be well known by then having already won the Grammy(s). All of those new songs from the new album will be eligible for those Grammys. They will be knocking on the door of the industry. Banging actually! I don't think she can be ignored anymore! Great reaction to a Beautiful song. One further thought. Hopefully the album is going to be more of the same or similar production. That being the case this is going to be the signature sound, style and voice that will be used to introduce Angelina to the World. This will be her sound, her style. Glad to hear your comments...I do agree with your assessment that Angelina's interpretation is declarative not pleading. In the last few phrases, she is clearly putting the onus on the "boy". After living through my own "boy" period, I can say this interpretation is usually valid--"boys" are slow to take responsibility for their feelings and the feelings of their partner. So, there you go, Angelina brings so much to the reinterpretation of the lyrics with vocal techniques that are just mind-blowing!

Before too long of a stretch, you really should check out Angelina’s newest song *”Bad Valentine.”* You mentioned that Angelina’s take is as if to say “…don’t mess with me…” This new song in collaboration with Toby Gad (they’re releasing an album this summer 😳) is almost an explanation as to “…why you don’t wanna mess with me.” It’s official video is due to be released with other material but this sneak peek was performed at the same little venue in LA where Adele was discovered. 😳 Toby co-wrote the song with Angelina and accompanies her on piano. I have always felt that Angelina was the best singer at whatever age she happened to be, but was reluctant to rank here among the very best. But now I can't think of any female singers that are better all around. Some have better range or perhaps a better belting voice, but I can't think of anyone better at conveying the message and emotion in the lyrics with very precise technique. It is this last bit I've seen improve over the last few years. Before when she did runs they were effective, just not as precise and effortless as in this song.

@@brittreacts I'm writing here because I'm a month late. First thank you for not saying, "she made it her own". She did what you said she did, she re-imagined it, which was the point of the whole project by Toby. When he picked her for this song he was so impressed by her talent not just as a singer, though he introduced her as, 'the best singer in the world, you haven't heard yet'. They have started writing together for an album to come out later. They have "let out" one of the songs. It isn't a finished product. It's more of a 'rough draft', but it is still what it always turns out to be with Angelina singing it, amazing. Here is the best copy of it so far. James Thiel is a rabid Angie fan and got permission to do this. It is sourced from the main board I'm pretty sure, anyway James did a great job with it. Angelina is going to be up there with Whitney and Ella and Etta and Billie, because she is honest and so very truthful in her singing. The reason I think she is better than Beyonce' is Angelina sings in service to the song, Beyonce sings it for Beyonce'. That doesn't necessarily make her a bad person, though it doesn't necessarily not make her a good person either, she is just not different. Which is what strikes you first about Angelina. She is not calculating at all. She means it when she tells an audience how much she loves them and appreciates them. Will that change with Angelina? Great reaction and insights on Angelina's performance and vocal choices to reimagine this classic! I totally agree with you that she's still evolving, maturing (though we all thought that wasn't possible, lol). Also that her delivery is more of a statement than a plea. The production and instrumentation value on this is outstanding as well. Toby and Angelina performed this live at The Hotel Cafe in LA a few weeks ago and it was as outstanding as the recorded version as is usually the case with Angelina. No matter what she sounds amazing! BUT... surprise! They unveiled an unreleased new song "Bad Valentine" they wrote together. YOU HAVE TO CHECK THAT OUT! I can assure you you'll fall off your chair again with this one, lol. Britt, I think you can find four or five versions of this online, now, and I love each one for different reasons. No two vocal performances of the song are the same. Toby Gad is re-releasing six or eight of his classics, as an album of piano ballads, and Angelina will sing at least this song, on that album. Angelina explained what she does in her words, in an interview around the VOX awards, I think. She said she liked to "make her own rendditions", rather than cover a song. Watch for Bad Valentine, Angelina's song written with Toby Gad. She brought the sass!

Brilliant insight, Britt, on how differently Angelina interprets this song from Beyoncé! She does come across more empowered as a woman calling out the boy for behaving like a boy and not a man. I wonder if she's also had some experience with one and was therefore even more passionate about making that point?
