The maid's name was Florence Johnston. She was played by Marla Gibb. The only Florence Henderson that I know was the actress who played the mom on The Brady Bunch 😊😊 The show with JJ was Good Times which was a spin off of Maude which was a spin off from All in the Family. Lenny Kravitz's mom was Roxie Roker who played Mrs Jefferson's best friend Helen.

The Jeffersons lived next door to Archie and Edith initially until they moved on up to the eastside and their show was based in an expensive high rise with a mixed couple next door which included Lenny Kravitz's mother Roxie Roker. Florence was the Jefferson's maid. Good Times did actually spin off from All in the Family but in the rare double spin off. Edith's cousin Maude (played by Bea Arthur) visited and Maude became a hit spin off show, where Florida Evans, was Maude's maid and they eventually spun off Florida into her own show and yes, you are right, it was Good Times where Jimmy Walker always said dy-no-mite and Janet Jackson later appeared on that show too. Incidentally, Florida's neighbor Willona, was played by Ja'net Dubois, who was the foster mother to Janet Jackson's character, but the actress also sang the theme song for....the Jeffersons! Janet Jackson would also eventually appear on another Norman Lear sitcom, Diff'rent Strokes.

The Jefferson’s moving to the East Side was a spin off from All in the Family. All in the Family was a light hearted/ serious show exploring all kinds of social issues. One of those topics was racism which the fictional Archie was just full of so they moved a Black family next door. The women became good friends and visited often. The men had the relationship that you would expect between a struggling white guy with racial prejudices and a pretty successful (more than Archie) Black man. Archie the character had his share of faults but he was more ignorant than mean. If that makes sense. Because of that there was something lovable about his character which showed racism as the very complicated matter that it can be. Also remember that this show was filmed in the sixties and early seventies (I think) so it was a lot closer to the Civil Rights Movement than we are now. Carroll was concerned about playing the character of Archie for so long because he was afraid of being labeled a racist, ignorant person like the character of Archie. It was a fictional show written and produced by people who wanted Americans to reflect on societal issues without scolding and lecturing people.

Norman Lear created a 70s sit-com empire starting with "All In The Family." "The Jeffersons" (Sherman Hemsley, Isabel Sanford, and Marla Gibbs) was the second spinoff. The first spinoff was "Maude" (Bea Arthur), Edith's cousin. Maude's housekeeper was Florida Evans. Florida (Esther Rolle) and James Evans (John Amos) relocated to Chicago with their own spin-off "Good Times" featuring Kid Dy-no-Mite! Jimmie Walker. Several other spinoffs were made featuring "All In The Family" characters. Those were all great spin-offs along with several minor sit-com spinoffs.

As others have mentioned, The Jeffersons lived next door to the Bunkers before they “moved on up” into their own series. Mrs. Jefferson was friends with Edith and Lionel Jefferson was friends with Mike and Gloria, so they were over at the Bunker’s house a lot. The character of George was talked about but not seen until this episode because Norman Lear wanted Sherman Hemsley to play George but the actor was tied up in another show so Lear held the role for him, creating George’s brother as a temporary “head of the household” character until Hemsley was free.

For me the most important part of the character arc of Archie is his growth as a human being. As stubborn, bigoted, ignorant, and loudmouthed as he is, he truly changed and grew as a person throughout the series. There are so many great examples that I would love to reference, but I don't want to spoil your journey. I cannot wait to watch you experience those moments for the first time and get some of that feeling that I felt the first time I watched. ❤

Caroll O'Conner is Archie Bunker. The Jeffersons (Deee-lux apartment in the sky) was a spin off and came a few years later, so yes, the Bunkers and Jeffersons were both homeowners who were neighbors. The DY-NO-MITE show was Good Times, which was totally unrelated to this show but If I recall was all created by the same guy. All politically motivated shows but reflex not only the sighs of ThOSE TIMES but in modern day now. George Jefferson saying " get down on your knees and sing "Mamey" was a reference to Al Jolson, an early, early Hollywood star that used blackface at the time (I want to say the 1920/1930's time period)

The Jeffersons were introduced to the show as neighbors across the street. George Jefferson was such an outstanding talent, Norman Lear (creator of All in the Family) created a spin-off show, The Jefferson’s. The bantering between Archie and George was fantastic. With the tv show, The Jefferson’s, they had moved out of Queens, where Archie lived, and into a nice, upper middle class apartment.

Florence’s last name was Johnston. The Jeffersons was an All In The Family spinoff. George’s brother Henry was living in George’s house next to Archie as the Jeffersons were originally Archie’s neighbors. Henry got a place of his own and this was a farewell party. George at first was refusing to go to the party at first cause he doesn’t like white people in particular Archie. You should react to the All In The Family clip where it’s George and Louise’s son Lionel engagement party and what happens when they meet Lionel’s future in laws for the first time.

Norman Lear was the genius who created All In The Family (and The Jeffersons) and wrote much of the dialogue. Lear said his father (Lear's father) was fond of calling others "meathead" when he thought they had done something stupid. And that's how Archie came to call Mike "meathead" with regularity on the show.

"Mammy" was a song by Al Jolsen, a popular white Jewish jazz singer in the 1920's, who performed it in blackface and with an exaggerated Southern black drawl on stage, and then later in the movie "The Jazz Singer.". Even in George and Archie's time, it was considered offensive, as I recall (I was in grade school in the 70's, but I seem to remember it was considered by many to be racist even then). Also, you're correct, the maid's name in The Jeffersons was indeed "Florence," but Florence Henderson was the actress who played the mom in The Brady Bunch.

@kennethgay559

All in the Family came 1st. The (4)Jefferson's moved in next door to the bunkers in the 5th season. After a few season, CBS wanted them to get their own show, so they decided to Spin them off. That's when the "Move on up, to the deluxe...." The Jeffersons had a maid named Florence, who George had an adversarial relationship with. Florence eventually got her own spin off called (5)"Checking In". Going back to the Jeffersons. The upstairs neighbors were an interracial couple Tom and Helen Willis and their Daughter Jenny. Hellen, played by Roxie Roker is the mother of Lenny Kravitz. The Jefferson's son dated Jenny which George did not like! Back to All in The Family. Edith had a cousin named Maude. Archie hated her! Edith loved her and Maude Loved Edith! Maude was a VERY LIBERAL outspoken Woman! and you meet her when she comes to take care of Edith after a surgery. The laughs between the head butting of Maude and Archie do not stop! So Maude Spun off in 1972. (2)Maude had a house keeper, Florida Evans, but she left to move to Chicago, because her husband James Evans got a job there. (New Spin Off) (3)Good Times. after Edith Passed away they Rebranded All in the Family to (6)Archie Bunkers Place. Gloria and Mike had moved to California and ended up getting a divorce. So they did another spin off called (7)"Gloria". Then years later they did a spin off called (8)704 Hauser St (The address The Bunkers lived at.) this with the premise of a Black family moved in with the same dynamic as the Bunkers had in the 70's!
@RLucas3000
@RLucas3000 11 ай бұрын
I loved so many of these shows, but it was unforgivable that they had Mike and Gloria divorce. It’s the reason Gloria was not a hit. We just could not accept them divorcing. And they make Mike the villain instead of (smartly) making it no-fault. Even Archie Bunker’s Place was a mere shadow of All in the Family. When Gloria failed, she should have moved back home, that would have helped. And Checking In failed because they made Florence too nice. They gave her a spin off because she was sassy, then took that away. Very dumb. At least she was able to return after a year. That was a smart decision.

The phrase George Jefferson uses when talking to Archie thru the door is "I wouldn't come in there even if you got down on your knees and sang Mammy.". As you know Mammy is a vulgar and racist term to refer to black mothers that stems from the slave days. The reference about getting in his knees refers to the 1927 film The Jazz Singer. In the movie a white guy gets on his knees, while in black face, and sings a song called Mammy. It was the first movie to have sound and audio. Many cartoons. TV shows and movies have used spoofs of the scene or references to the scene since 1927.

Lionel Jefferson has been on the show since the first episode as a friend to Mike (Meathead) and Gloria as well as guy who ran errands in the Neiborhood. In the last episodes of the first season Lionel's parents George and Louise moved next door. Norman Lear wanted Sherman Hemsley to play the part as George, but at the time he was still in the musical Purlie they wrote in a brother for George named Herny played by Mel Steward, so Louise has a scene partner on the show to act with. It's funny you mentioned JJ and the show Good Times. The actor who plays Lionel Jefferson is named Mike Evans and he co-created Good Times along with Norman Lear who created All in the Family. All in the family holds the record for spin-offs. There is All in the Family and the spin offs are Maude, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Gloria and Archie Bunkers Place. All in the Family was rebranded and retitled Archie Bunker's Place after three of the four main characters had left the show. Archie buys the neighborhood bar and the show revolves around him, his black housekeeper and his Jewish niece as well as his buddies and customer's in the bar. Gloria was about Archie's daughter living in upstate New York and working as a veterinary assistant. It only lasted a few episodes. Good Times was about a black family living in the ghetto of Chicago and struggling to make it. Maude was about a very liberal version of Archie Bunker. She was introduced in two episodes of All in the Family. The Jefferson's was about a black family who finally makes it and move to a swanky area of Manhattan. It was the first show to feature a black family in a positive light whereas before they were always featured as living in a ghetto or one parent, usually the father, was missing.

The Jeffersons was a spinoff show from All In The Family. So that movin on up was when The Jeffersons came into money so that they could move out of the neighborhood.

Good Times was the series with Jimmie Walker and his "dyn-o-mite" exclamation. There were T-shirts with his face and that exclamation back in the mid 70s. As far as The Jeffersons goes, when they were on All In The Family George Jefferson's dry-cleaning business was still getting off of the ground. So they were working middle class. Eventually, the business grew and the Jeffersons moved away from Astoria to that deluxe apartment in Manhattan. Hence, the spin off TV show.

LOL! Marla Gibbs played the Jeffersons’ maid, Florence Johnston. Lenny’s mom was the lovely Roxie Roker who portrayed Louise’s best friend, Helen Willis. She and Tom Willis were a mixed-race couple and the parents and Lionel’s wife, Jenny.

I am 50 now and when I was just a little kid of 4 or 5 I had a 3 piece suit and did the George Jefferson walk. As I thought he was the coolest dude ever. Picture that. A pasty white red headed boy. I still think George is a bad ass. And when I wear a suit now at some point I will still do the walk. All hale George.

Many shows started with All in the family: The Jeffersons (their neighbors here) Maude (she was Edith’s cousin) Good Times came from Maude ( Florida was Maude’s housekeeper) There were 4 other short-lived series as well.

The Jeffersons, during the All in the Family years, were the Bunkers' neighbors in Queens. George owned laundry/dry cleaning businesses. The Jeffersons picks up their story after they "made it" and "moved on up to the East Side." Lionel, George's son, made a few appearances in the first season or two of the Jeffersons, but was eventually written out of the script as he moved on in his fictional life (getting married, etc.).

Check out Edith Bunker, Archies wife, Jean Stapleton in You've Got Mail and other movies. She uses a completely different voice here. Carroll O'Connor is a tremendous actor. You would like Lionel Jefferson who is good friends with Meathead since the Jeffersons moved in down the street. Later as a spin off show which often happened back in the 60s and 70s the Jeffersons moved on up to the East Side to a DEEELUX apt. in the sky and had their own show.

You are sooo close! The Bunkers and the Jeffersons were indeed neighbors. "The Jeffersons" was a spin-off from "All In The Family" after season 4. You are slightly off on the Florance character. Florance was the maid, but she was not related to Lenny Kravitz. Roxie Rocker, who is Lenny Kravitzs' mother in real life, played the character Helen Willis who lived next to the Jeffersons at "the deluxe apartment in the sky"😊☮

Jimmy Walker played James Evans, Jr. or simply J.J. on Good Times, which was another series produced by Norman Lear. J.J.'s catchphrase was "dyn-o-mite." And yes, a very young Janet Jackson was in the cast in later seasons The Jeffersons moved in next door to the Bunkers a few seasons into All In The Family. While the rest of the family members quickly became good friends, Archie Bunker and George Jefferson avoided each other until this very scene. Despite their vitriolic words here and later in the series, though, it kind of felt like Archie and George had a grudging affection for one another. They even worked together on a local political campaign, much to the chagrin of Archie's son-in-law "Meathead." The Jeffersons eventually moved "on up" to "deluxe apartment," which became the very popular spin-off show The Jeffersons. The All In The Family episode when they moved out is very touching, especially when Edith Bunker and Louise Jefferson say goodbye.(I'm getting a little misty eyed just thinking about it). As an aside, George and Louise's son Lionel frequently visited the Bunker house to spend time with Mike and Gloria, and he and Archie developed an unlikely , but heartwarming friendship. This was one of the factors in Archie's character development, as his thinking about race gradually changed. (Spoiler Alert: By the time All In The Family had become Archie Bunker's Place, Archie was very tolerant and even defended the honor of his Hispanic housekeeper). Edit: In this scene as well as the Sammy Davis Jr guest appearance that you also reacted to, Archie is the target of what is called a backhanded compliment. That is an insult carefully worded to sound like a compliment on a casual listen. In keeping with his portrayal as kind of uneducated, Archie completely missed the insult in both cases and thought the "compliment" was sincere.

It's so funny thinking of someone that remembers Good Times because Janet Jackson had a bit part, before anyone actually knew who she was.... It's not like they said "Hey, that's Janet Jackson sister of the Jackson 5" because way before Thriller, right? Although Mike did come out with the much better album called "Off The Wall" back then.

So some of the context you are missing is this: Lionel was a character from episode 1, he was a friend of Mike and Gloria and Archie was in fact tolerant of Lionel. Archie genuinely likes Lionel. The Bunkers' white neighbors sold their house to Lionel's family when they moved out of Queens early in the series. (I think you might have watched a clip of Archie and Edith discussing this, but I might be mistaken, I'm watching a lot of AitF reactions lately). Lionel Jefferson's family consisted of his mother, his father, and his uncle, Henry. Norman Lear desperately wanted Sherman Hemsley to portray George Jefferson but Hemsley was committed to plays for a few years. So Lear created the Henry character. In Henry's first appearance, Lionel and Louise initially try to pass Henry off as George, because they were embarrassed that George is bigoted against white people and wouldn't step foot in the Bunkers' house. Henry appears throughout the first 3 or so years of All in the Family as the main Jefferson patriarch, with George only mentioned or being heard offscreen. Hemsley finally became available around the same time the actor playing Henry was leaving the show. So this clip you are watching is the transition between Henry to George as Archie's antagonist. I believe this is the only episode in which Henry and George appear at the same time, as the actor playing Henry did not return for The Jeffersons (in fact, the actor that played Lionel would only play Lionel for one year of The Jeffersons himself. He would join Lear's writing team and create Good Times, and another actor would play Lionel for most of The Jeffersons). So that's the main context: George lived next door to Archie for three years before ever meeting him, primarily because Norman Lear's first choice wasn't available and he stuck to his guns. And we're glad he did. Hemsley was perfection.
