This song was written by Eric Clapton in honor of his son who sadly died at four years old when he fell from a hotel balcony. In Clapton's version he is singing to his son.

Clapton's acoustic version is the one that destroys me. Peace, Love!!

Eric Clapton wrote this after his young boy died in an accident. I think the phrase that talks about ," I don't belong in Heaven " could be due to the possible self guilt the writer feels. Maybe Clapton like every good dad reflects on how he should have been watching out for his son. There was no fault found in the death of his son falling from a building to his death.

@@Joseph-f9m7s I believe you are right. It's been so long now but I "remember" he was entertaining people in the hotel room and lost track of his son. Maybe I'm wrong but that's how I remember it.

@deanm375 it was actually an apartment that the sons mother lived in with the son. The building had a window cleaning crew, and the window was open at the time. The maid was chasing the son while they played, and he accidentally fell out of the window. One of the worst tragedies imaginable. I have no idea how Eric has performed this song without breaking down all these years

When Austin was a kid he sometimes traveled & sang with his father's gospel quartet in Georgia. One of the things that puts the men in Home Free on a higher tier is their ability to vocalize the emotional context of a song. The water you hear is the lake in front of his & his wife's house. I think you'd love the latest song he's written for her: "I'll Go First".

Eric Clapton wrote this song after his young son died in a fall. The version I read was that a maid had left a window open and the boy fell from it. This is so poignant! It's an expression of grief that Clapton had to continue living in this world after losing his son. Gorgeous version of this song. BTW, that's not falsetto for Austin; it's his head voice. BTW, this is in Austin's front yard. They have what they call a pond between several houses (that has fish!). I call it a small lake. If you notice on songs that are shot in his living room there's a rack of fishing poles that get used a lot! You should react to Austin singing Bring Him Home from Les Misérables. Have tissues, you'll need them. It's powerful and emotional. I cry every single time I hear it! And that ending, OMG!

He can't stay in heaven because he hasn't been called home yet, unlike the loved one he's lost. Austin's voice is so perfect, it's like the sound autotune aims for. It's heartbreaking to watch Eric Clapton perform it - this is a more comfortable distance from which to hear the song.

Austin's solos are awesome. Should check out Tim Foust solos also. Will you still love me tommorow/stay (from his album pieces of me), his range is insane for a bass singer. And the duets of Peter Hollens/ Tim Foust - Greensleeves and Misty mountain and others. Peter is a genius at layering

Austin, at 4, started singing with his Dad's gospel acapella group. His degree is in Vocal Theatrical Performance. After this somber, beautiful cover it's time for you to take a listen to Austin blow out Stevie Wonder's Signed Sealed Delivered. He called it the most fun he ever had while singing. This one as well as Tears in Heaven are both performed in Austin's yard. This rabbit hole is really more like the Grand Canyon! Other songs by Austin include Bring Him Home from Les Mis, At Last the great song by Etta James where Austin does it in the same key as Etta, Georgia on my Mind, an Al Green tune that I can't recall the name of right now and many others. A Home Free song released this Christmas called Christmas in L.A. features Austin on lead where he gives everyone Michael Jackson vibes. Again, thanks for your awesome reaction.

Clapton blamed himself for his Son's death. He fell from the 53 rd floor in a friends New York apartment. In those days you could open the windows up and the maid left it open. His son went to lean out the window, but there was no glass, so he fell. I am a crusty old far, but this song brings a tear to my eye almost everytime I hear it because of the story behind it.

It's a song that Clapton put out there, knowing that it would probably be sung by others. Works of art do not come with "Hands Off" signs all over them and it's a little precious to pretend they do. If you don't want to hear anyone else sing the song, you can always avoid it.
