I got to work for Dolly once. She embarrassed the hell out of me once when she said, "You know, people ask me all the time if they're real. And I just say 'Lord no! There ain't no way I could grow my nails this long without breaking them!'."

One of the greatest stories I know about dolly Parton is that she wrote the song I Will always Love you. When Whitney Houston decided to sing it for The bodyguard she wanted to pay dolly for the song. Dolly was in tears the first time she heard Whitney sing it and she did not want any money for it she just wanted writing credit. Her label talked her into it but she took all of the proceeds from the song of Whitney's and donated it to underprivileged people in Nashville. I mean millions of dollars. She also has this legacy of reading for children or she sends books to children every month for free. She is an amazing amazing woman

She also started a program with the governor of Tennessee several years ago allowing out of state students to attend state colleges at an in-state tuition. My daughter was able to go to ETSU because of this. She only had to volunteer to tutor up to 20 hours a week in public schools. This helps college students and elementary and high school students! This was a scholarship worth up to $28,000 a year! She has worked with and donated to the state of Tennessee on many educational programs.

Close but not exactly right. It was Kevin Costner that thought the song would fit the bodyguard. Dolly wasnt sure such a intimate song, she wrote it for Portner Wagner, she worked for him at the time and wanted to do her own thing and they where both being stubborn so she went home and did what she does best, wrote a song, could be done any other way. Well she agreed and kinda just let it slide. Then one night she is driving home from the Opry and she hears whitney on the radio and the lyrics are very familiar. Whitney finally hits the iconic "AND I I" and Dolly nearly wrecks the car, she never thought the song could be belted out THAT strongly or beautifully. On the pay side she actually didnt care about the credit just as long as she got paid, but not to line her own pockets as you said but to donate the earnings.

The story of Jolene is a mix of ideas for her songwriting. Her husband (of nearly 57 years) used to like to tease her about the woman at the bank flirting with him and she's joked, he was spending too much time down at the bank because I knew we didn't have that much money. Then she met a little girl named Jolene with red hair at a concert and thought it a beautiful name, and those two ideas mixed together about another woman trying to take her man. This song was a please don't take my husband, whereas Patsy Cline's Crazy was the woman saying, I'm crazy to love this man, versus Loretta Lynn who wrote You Ain't Woman to Take My Man and Fist City to tell the other woman she better step off!

Always one of the most classy Country singers of ALL times! One of the saddest things, is that there are SO many great songs that she wrote, that few even know about! I also really loved "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and reading the credits, telling how many of the songs for that, that she had written! She had a great "love interest" in that with Burt Reynolds too, they meshed so well!

You've reacted to a few Pentatonix videos - did you know that not only did Pentatonix collaborate with Dolly on singing "Jolene", but all of them won a Grammy for the performance? 2017 Best Country Duo/Group Performance. Amazingly, it was Dolly's first Grammy for the song - over 40 years after it's initial release! When preparing for the performance, Pentatonix was only expecting to act as the backup for Dolly, but when they got to the studio, she insisted that they take a verse for themselves. Pretty classy act!

Dolly Parton has written about five thousand songs, has got I don't know how many Grammy Awards and Oscars and all of that and can also play about five to seven musical instruments very, very well and of course as everybody knows, she sure can sing. Very, very good. They don't call her the "Queen of Country Music for nothing. She is a Hall of Famer. And in case you didn't know, Dolly wrote the song "Jolene" and "I will always Love You on the same day. Yes she wrote, "I will always Love You" to Porter Wagner and played the guitar and sang it to Porter Wagner in his show. She was a great big help on the Show but as much as she loved Porter Wagner she had to go do her own thing. And oh yea',when Dolly wrote "I will always Love You", Whitney Houston was about fourteen years old or something. Dolly was driving in her car one day and when she heard Whitney Houston singing her song she couldn't believe it. Later Dolly found out about it and even though Dolly really loved Whitney Houston's voice, she allowed her to do her song and include it on her show "the Bodyguard" which Whitney made millions of dollars from, she had to pay Dolly Royalty checks. Dolly didn't mind as long as Whitney kept those checks coming in. According to Rolling Stones Magazine Dolly had gotten only about seven thousand dollars and never received the rest. Whitney had unfortunately died in the toilet from cocaine. Whitney Houston's mind wasn't right after Bobby Brown left her and even won their little girl. And needless to say, Dolly is a millionaire and has been for years. But thank God money didn't let money make her, she made it. And yeah, Elvis Presley loved Dolly's song so much he would sing it privately to Presley before Priscilla divorce him. She then heard that Elvis Presley wanted to sing "I will always Love You and Dolly was alright with that. But when Colonel Parker went to Dolly, not only did he want all the money to go to Elvis but also all the rights, she changed her mind. After Elvis learned about this BS that the Colonel had pulled he got so mad wanted to kill him but instead just fired his stupid ass. But anyway, see ya'.

Hi Britt. Dolly is an absolute treasure. Just to hit a few high points. She came from a mountain family that had no money. (You really have to check out a video of her singing Coat of Many Colors). She has written over 4 thous. songs to date. Many huge hits, some for other people. She of course wrote, and had the first hit with a song that was used in a movie and then became a big hit again for Whitney Houston (I will always love you). She started a program to provide books for kids whose families can't afford them, and has provided over a million books so far. When fires destroyed large parts of Tennessee she donated huge money to help with emergency relief and rebuilding. She even has a theme park called Dollywood! As a young performer she got a job as the girl singer for Porter Waggoner who was a big country star and had a TV show back in the day. She told him she would stay a couple years. She stayed for a few and then wanted to move on to a solo career. As a gift and thank you, she wrote the song I will always love you to him. He knew she was kept his show going and he didn't take her leaving the show very well. Years later he fell on some hard financial times and had to sell his music. Dolly bought it so he would get a fair price, and then gave it back to him as a gift. Years after that when he was dying, Dolly would go to the hospital and sing for him and his family to raise his spirits. She not only sings like an angel. She just might really be one. Here is a link to Coat of many colors. Enjoy!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHOqm2xsqJufe8k

Before Dolly got real famous my mother used to send her flowers to Dolly for her birthday. So dolly would send my mother autograph records of her, and one time she called my mother and said thank you so much for the flowers. This was in the early 70s. Please to the song Coat Of Meany Colors by Dolly
